Mi formación es como Activista Artista Visual en la Comunidad Gay, me mudé a Estados Unidos porque salí VIH positivo, me di la oportunidad de por medio de la pintura tener una voz, porque mi generación de hombres gays siempre han estado un poco dentro del closet, mi generación me impulso a no tener miedo y aceptar quién realmente soy.

Primeros Trabajos

Mis primeros trabajos fueron en esos momentos de tristeza, de querer regresarme a mi país, de sentir anhelos, de querer limpiarme espiritualmente, por eso mi arte es muy abstracto.

Mis primeras imágenes son de cuando me involucré como activista en diferentes lugares como Bienestar, APLA, LAGLC, estuve trabajando para la Revista Impacto publicando imágenes, casi la mitad de mi trabajo del 2001 al 2008 son imágines dedicadas al VIH.

Descripción de Arte
Mi arte es abstracto por querer manifestarme sin ninguna ética. Creo que mis obras tienen un mensaje subliminal, el abstracto no tiene límites en cuestión de técnicas. Me he sentido muy atraido a los colores en una forma de expresión sin límite.

A través de mi arte quiero cautivar ese mundo espiritual de mis ancestros, yo vengo de chamanes por parte de mi mamá.

Los chamanes son como alquimistas porque hacen magia, yo trabajo con una técnica de sanación por medio de la pintura, tengo una colección que se llama transorgánica y me gusta trabajarlo con personas que están bloqueadas con su energía, y se les ayuda por medio de la pintura.

No estoy atraido al realismo en cuanto a técnica de arte, me gusta más lo interno, es por ello que algunas de mis obras eróticas pareciera que son simplemente líneas o contornos.

Murales
Hay un mural que hice dedicado a la llorona, lo pinté en Silver Lake, hay muchas historias de la llorona, esta es la mujer maíz, el maíz es una forma de subsustir.

Actualmente estoy en Pomona y estoy haciendo más murales, por medio de esta colección callejera a través de los murales en el fondo la idea es trascender. En los callejones de Pomona no hay tanta política para poder pintar los murales, como hay en tantos lugares.

Colección
Me gusta que las cosas que se pinten se expresen abiertamente. Se me ocurrió hacer una colección de hombres con los falos, que si eres bottom o top disfrutarlo y expresarlo abiertamente, creo que debemos aceptarnos como somos.

Material
La mayoría de mi arte son acrílicos, manejo también lo que es water color, aceite, gis, pigmentos naturales que tomo de las plantas, los pigmentos los uso para texturas y líneas, cuando usas una sustancia diferente a la otra hay una reacción y eso se manifiesta en el color.

Si manejara una obra realista tendría que ser lisa. Me gusta usar mezcla de materiales, lo que le llaman Mixed Media. Incluso hay pinturas que he hecho de sangre, tengo figuras humanoides que no he sacado a la luz porque creo que son muy personales.

Exhibición
Actualmente formo parte de exhibiciones colectivas en el Museo Latino de Pomona, al terminar la exhibición actual en mayo continuará una exhibición diferente en junio.

Un tipo de inadmisibilidad es Presencia en Contra de la Ley (UP por sus siglas en inglés). Cualquiera que esté presente en contra de la ley en los Estados Unidos por más de 180 días y quien luego deje voluntariamente el país, tendrá prohibido regresar por 3 años. Si la persona permanece en los EE.UU. por 1 año o más, y luego sale voluntariamente, él/ella pueden tener prohibido re-entrar por hasta 10 años. Comunmente a esto se le llama ‘prohibición de 3/10 años’.

Un perdón para la prohibición de 3/10 años puede ser obtenida si la persona que lo busca puede probar que la negación de su admisión a los EE.UU. podría causar “dificultades extremas” para su esposo(a) o pariente residente permanente o ciudadano(a). En la mayoría de los casos estos perdones deben solicitarse con un consulado estadounidense, en conjunto con una aplicación para visa como inmigrante. El aplicante de perdón debe permanecer fuera mientras el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS por sus siglas en inglés) toma la decisión sobre la aplicación. Si el DHS aprueba el perdón, el aplicante obtiene una visa como inmigrante. Sin embargo, si la petición es negada, el aplicante debe permancecer fuera de los EE.UU. for 3 a 10 años antes de ser elegible para volver a aplicar por una visa como inmigrante.

Ya que el proceso de perdón, el cual puede tomar años, usualmente ocurre mientras el aplicante está fuera de los EE.UU., hay un número enorme de potenciales aplicantes, quienes simplemente deciden no aplicar porque no quieren tomar el riesgo de ser separados de sus familias. Como resultado – DHS ha propuesto una nueva regla para procesar estas peticiones de perdón mientras el aplicante está en los EE.UU. Esto es llamado un “Perdón permaneciendo en los EE.UU.” (Stateside Waiver).
Los beneficios de tal cambio de procedimiento son enormes. Reducirá el número de personas indocumentadas en este país. También evitará muchas separaciones familiares y todos los trabajos que esto lleva consigo.
Mi reacción inmediata al DHS fueron dos pensamientos. 1. Gracias. 2. ¡¿Por qué les tomó tanto?!

Llama a la Casa Blanca o envíales un correo electrónico y has escuchar tu apoyo por los Perdones Permaneciendo en los EE.UU. Tenemos que darnos cuenta, el Congreso no pasará leyes que le hagan la vida mejor a la población inmigrante en este país. El Presidente ha salido al frente y tomado esta iniciativa. Él necesita escuchar que esta acción es apreciada en la comunidad.

Esto es solo un paso. Hay muchas otras cosas en nuestra lista en las que la Administración puede tomar acción sin que se involucre al Congreso – como parar de enforzar DOMA y parar la separación forzada de parejas bi-nacionales del mismo sexo. Te mantendré al tanto en mi próxima columna.

I-601 Stateside Waivers

In certain cases, U.S. immigration laws provide for waivers of inadmissibility to immediate relatives of U.S. citizens so they may reunify with their families in the U.S. The grounds of inadmissibility are set forth in section 212(a) of the INA.

One ground of inadmissibility is Unlawful Presence (UP). Anyone who is unlawfully present in the United States for more than 180 days and who then departs voluntarily from the country will be barred from coming back for 3 years. If the person remains in the U.S. for 1 year or longer and then departs voluntarily, he/she may be barred from re-entering for up to 10 years. This is commonly referred to as 3/10-year bars.

A waiver to the 3/10-year bars may be obtained if the person seeking the it can prove that the denial of his or her 
admission to the United States would cause “extreme hardship” to his/her U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident spouse or parent. In most cases these waivers must be filed with a U.S. consulate abroad in conjunction with an application for an immigrant visa. The waiver applicant must remain abroad while the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) makes a decision on the application. If DHS approves the waiver, the applicant gets an immigrant visa. If the request is denied however, the applicant must remain outside 
of the United States for 3 or 10 years before being able to reapply for 
an immigrant visa.

Since the waiver process, which may take years, usually occurs while the applicant is outside of the U.S., there are a huge number of potential applicants who simply choose not to apply because they don’t want to take a chance and be separated from their families. As a result – DHS has proposed a new rule to process these waiver requests while the applicant is in the U.S. This is called a “Stateside Waiver.”

The benefits of such a procedural change is enormous. It will reduce the number of undocumented persons in this country. It will also ease family separation and all the hardships that go with it.
My immediate reaction to DHS is two-fold – 1. Thank you. 2. What took you so long?!

Call the White House or send them an email and voice your support for Stateside Waivers. Lets face it; Congress is not likely to enact any laws to ease the suffering of the immigrant population in this country. The President has risen to the plate and taken this courageous step. He needs to know that this action is appreciated in the community.

This is just one step. There are many others items on our list that the Administration may take action on without the involvement of Congress – such as ceasing to enforce DOMA and thus stopping the forced separation of same-sex bi-national couples. I will have more updates on that front in my next column.

El 5 de marzo del 2012, investigadores y médicos líderes en el campo del VIH se reunieron en Seattle, Washington durante la Conferencia en Retrovirus e Infecciones Oportunistas (CROI) para discutir sobre los últimos avances en la atención de VIH.

Para los pacientes de VIH es sumamente importante que en la lucha global contra el SIDA, nosotros nos aseguremos de que no se pierdan dentro de un sistema burocrático y de que les proporcionemos la atención que necesitan. Durante la CROI se presentaron varios estudios sobre las estrategias para atender al alto porcentaje de pacientes infectados por el VIH que viven sin ser diagnosticados o bien no reciben tratamiento. Las estrategias para ligar el diagnóstico con la atención médica incluyen, la prueba rápida CD4 y las pruebas de diagnóstico de VIH en casa; según los estudios, estas pruebas mejoran las posibilidades de crear una relación entre los pacientes y los servicios de atención.
La Hepatitis C también fue foco de atención en la CROI. Hay nuevos medicamentos que ayudan a curar la Hepatitis C en pacientes que también tienen VIH y los efectos terapéuticos se asemejan a los vistos en pacientes con una sola infección. Una buena noticia que quiero compartir aquí es que la primera semana de marzo en los EE.UU. se inició una investigación sobre una nueva vacuna para prevenir la transmisión del virus de la Hepatitis (HCV).

Una gran parte de la investigación científica más interesante que se está llevando a cabo, es en relación al estado latente del VIH. Como lo entendemos hoy en día, es imposible curar el VIH con medicinas antirretrovirales de largo plazo por la habilidad que tiene el virus de integrarse a las células inactivas CD4 de larga vida, las cuales pueden quedarse en el cuerpo por décadas. Los medicamentos actuales para el VIH pueden evitar que el virus en la sangre infecte nuevas células, pero no pueden seleccionar y matar a las células CD4 que están ocupando al virus en silencio.

Actualmente se lleva a cabo una investigación para “despertar” específicamente a estas células T inactivas y que se infectan de manera crónica. Los investigadores de la CROI discutieron sobre varias medicinas que parecen ser capaces de obligar a estas células a que se activen y se mueran más rápidamente y así matar al virus que está dentro de ellas. Otros investigadores están estudiando terapias genéticas diseñadas para alterar las células T anfitrionas, y hacerlas resistentes a la infección del VIH de manera permanente.

Todos estos estudios están en su etapa de inicio, pero las implicaciones son emocionantes. “La cura”, aunque todavía es un sueño, nuevamente está siendo tema de discusión en los círculos científicos.

En conjunto, todas las presentaciones en la CROI confirman que los pacientes que son diagnosticados y que reciben atención, están muy bien. La esperanza de la comunidad científica continúa siendo que a través de la investigación, la educación, y una buena atención médica, podamos controlar una pandemia y eliminar nuevas infecciones de VIH, al igual que encontrar maneras para acabar con el virus en las personas que viven con esta infección que es compleja, elusiva y cambia la vida.

Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections
CROI 2012 Update

On March 5, 2012, leading HIV researchers and clinicians gathered in Seattle, Washington for CROI (Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections) to discuss the latest advances in HIV care.

“Retention in care” for HIV patients is a critical concept in the global fight against AIDS. A variety of studies were presented at CROI regarding strategies to address the high percentage of HIV-infected patients that either live undiagnosed or are lost to care. Strategies to improve diagnosis and linkage to care include rapid CD4 testing and home-based HIV diagnostic testing, both of which appear to improve linkage to care in small studies.

Hepatitis C also received a lot of attention at this CROI. New drugs are helping to cure Hepatitis C in patients who also have HIV, and the therapeutic effects approximate those seen in monoinfected individuals. Of note, an exciting trial of a novel vaccine to prevent HCV transmission opened in the U.S. during the first week of March.

Some of the most interesting scientific work is happening in the area of HIV latency. As we currently understand it, HIV is currently impossible to cure with long-term antiretrovirals because of its ability to integrate itself into long-lived quiescent CD4 T-cells, which can persist in the body for decades. Current HIV drugs can prevent virus in the blood from infecting new cells, but they cannot selectively kill the CD4 cells that are silently harboring the virus.

There is research now targeted at “awakening” these quiescent, chronically-infected T cells. Investigators at CROI discussed a variety of drugs that appear able to force these cells to activate and die more quickly, thus killing the virus inside of them. Other investigators are looking at gene therapies designed to alter host T cells, in order to make them permanently resistant to HIV infection. All of these studies are in early stages, but the implications are exciting. “Cure”, while still a dream at this point, is being discussed again in scientific circles.

All together, the presentations at CROI reaffirmed that patients with HIV, once diagnosed and linked to care, are doing very well. It remains the hope of the HIV scientific community that through research, education, and good clinical care, we can control the HIV pandemic, eliminate new infections of HIV from occurring, and find ways to eradicate the virus from those who live with this elusive, complex, and life-changing infection.

Gracias al financiamiento que recibe de Transitional Case Management (YTCM) para apoyar a jóvenes VIH positivos entre los trece y los veinticuatro años de edad, AltaMed les asigna a estos jóvenes un Administrador de Casos para ayudarles a entender el sistema de referencias médicas. Esta persona trabaja muy de cerca con ellos para llevar un buen control de su progreso. La juventud siente que su cuerpo joven es indestructible como el de Superman y no consideran que su salud sea una prioridad, por lo que no buscan atención médica o no terminan un tratamiento. El administrador de casos puede evaluar las necesidades inmediatas del paciente por medio de consultas individuales y darle los recursos que necesita para poder obtener los servicios médicos apropiados.

El ponerlos en contacto con los servicios adecuados es un trabajo de equipo. Desde las visitas al doctor, a la terapia de salud mental, evaluación nutricional, transporte, alojamiento, bancos de comida, abuso de sustancias y cuidado dental; la atención tiene un enfoque completo e integral. Como en un rompecabezas, todas las piezas tienen que encajar bien. Mente sana en cuerpo sano. El tener un techo sobre su cabeza hace una gran diferencia. El tener acceso a transportación quiere decir que llegarán a tiempo a sus citas. Para los jóvenes, una atención que proporcione estabilidad, es como pelar una cebolla capa por capa, un problema afecta a otro problema. Desde el momento de la inscripción hasta el momento en que los jóvenes pueden cuidarse por si mismos (una vez que estén listos o bien que ya no califiquen para el programa), el paciente y su administrador de casos trabajan juntos para manejar todas las áreas de necesidad.

Además del apoyo individual, YTMC ofrece un grupo semanal psicoterapéutico para jóvenes. Este es una sesión en grupo con el administrador de casos y el médico en salud mental. En grupo, este componente adicional, ayuda a aumentar el sentimiento de confianza y seguridad, al mismo tiempo que les permite relacionarse con jóvenes que están viviendo el mismo tipo de experiencias. Este grupo es un espacio seguro y confidencial en donde los participantes pueden hablar abiertamente sobre si condición de VIH sin miedo a ser juzgados.

Por ultimo, a los pacientes se les invita a que vayan a ver Illusionz; un evento social de prevención y educación para la comunidad, organizado mensualmente por AltaMed. Se les invita a los jóvenes a que traigan a sus amigos y familiares, ya que el evento promueve una verdadera convivencia social. En conjunto, estas sesiones individuales, de grupo y encuentros comunitarios hacen que YTCM sea un programa de intervención de éxito para los jóvenes que viven con VIH/SIDA.

Youth & HIV/AIDS

Living with HIV is no fun ride. As a chronic medical condition, managing the disease can be a tasking responsibility of 24/7. This is particularly more challenging for youth who are impacted by other social risk factors. While they vary from client to client, these include homelessness, substance abuse, survival sex, lack of family acceptance, mental health stigma and low self-esteem, to name a few.

Funded to implement Youth Transitional Case Management (YTCM) for HIV positive youth ages thirteen to twenty-four, AltaMed helps youth navigate the medical referral process by assigning a Case Manager to work side by side and monitor progress. In feeling that their bodies are young and practically indestructible like Superman, youth tend not to seek care or stay in care as they do not see their health as a priority. It is through one-on-one counseling sessions that the Case Manager is able to assess the client’s immediate needs and provide them with the tools to be successful in accessing services.

Linkage to care is a team effort. From doctor visits, to mental health therapy, nutrition assessment, transportation, housing, food bank, substance abuse treatment, and dental needs, the approach to care is a comprehensive and holistic one. Like a puzzle, all pieces must fit right. A healthy mind is a healthy body. A roof over someone’s head makes a world of difference. Access to reliable transportation means kept appointments. For youth, stabilizing care is like peeling an onion, layer upon layer, one issue impacts another. From time of enrollment to transitioning youth out on their own (when ready or when outside of range of program eligibility), client and Case Manager work closely to address all areas of need.

In addition to one-on-one support, YTCM provides a psychotherapeutic weekly youth group. This is a closed group co-facilitated by the Case Manager and Mental Health Clinician. In a group setting, this added component helps increase self-empowerment and bonding among youth going through similar life experiences. This group is a safe and confidential space where participants can talk openly about their HIV status without fear of judgment.

Lastly, clients are invited to attend AltaMed’s monthly community-level social/prevention/education Illusionz event. At this gathering, youth are encouraged to bring their friends and family, as it fosters a greater sense of social connectedness. Overall, these individual, group and community encounters make YTCM a successful intervention for youth living with HIV/AIDS.’

RESPUESTA: Hoy en día, un resultado positivo de la prueba del VIH significa un nuevo régimen de salud: citas médicas con regularidad, mejor nutrición y medicamentos a diario. Y con estas nuevas costumbres hay que hacer ajustes económicos. Para muchas personas que viven con el VIH, es un tema de gran preocupación el poder conseguir cuidado médico de buena calidad y que no cueste demasiado.

En marzo de 2010, se promulgó la Ley de Protección del Paciente y de Cuidado Médico Asequible (ACA, por sus siglas en inglés). Es una reforma de la industria privada de seguros médicos que extiende el acceso al seguro médico para millones de norteamericanos. Incluye cobertura más amplia de Medicaid, elimina las exclusiones por condiciones médicas preexistentes, y exige cierto tipo de cobertura como requisito mínimo. Estas reformas son esenciales para la prevención del VIH y el cuidado médico de personas con VIH/sida.

En junio se espera que la Corte Suprema de EE.UU. decida la constitucionalidad del ACA. Lambda Legal reunió a varias organizaciones para apoyar un escrito “amicus curiae” en el caso Dept. of HHS contra Florida. Cuando se promulgó el ACA, sólo un 17 porciento de norteamericanos con el VIH contaban con seguro médico privado. En el mercado de seguro individual, a las personas con el VIH se les considera “no asegurables”. Si solicitan seguro médico, a menudo los rechazan por tener una condición preexistente. Aún si consiguen seguro médico, las compañías de seguros pueden cobrarles primas carísimas, ya que en la mayoría de los estados no existe un límite máximo.

Actualmente Medicaid provee seguro médico para los pobres y las personas con incapacidades, pero en la mayoría de los estados, se requiere un diagnóstico de sida para cualificar como incapacitado. Esto crea un dilema: sólo si la infección del VIH se convierte en sida, uno cualifica para recibir los medicamentos que hubieran evitado el sida. El gobierno federal provee fondos para algunos servicios relacionados al VIH a través del programa Ryan White, pero dicho programa está tan sobrecargado que apenas puede proveer el cuidado necesario a personas que viven con el VIH.

El ACA fue diseñado para abordar este problema, ya que elimina las exclusiones por condiciones médicas preexistentes y exige que toda persona tenga seguro médico. Ya hemos visto como este requisito mínimo beneficia a las personas que viven con el VIH. En el 2006, Massachusetts reformó su sistema de salud a través de leyes similares al ACA; entre el 2005 y el 2008, la tasa de infección de VIH bajó un 37 porciento en Massachusetts, mientras que en el resto del país, aumentó un 8 porciento.

A todos nos preocupa el acceso al cuidado médico. Todos lo necesitamos, especialmente los que tienen condiciones preexistentes y que quedan al margen del sistema de salud actual, tales como las personas que viven con el VIH. The Affordable Care Act and HIV

Q: I recently tested positive for HIV, and a friend told me that I might have a hard time keeping health insurance if I changed jobs. What kind of insurance is available for me?

A: In 2012, a positive HIV test result is the beginning of a new health regimen – from regular check-ups, to better nutrition, to daily medications – and  these new health habits often become a substantial financial adjustment. For many people living with HIV, obtaining quality, affordable health care is of great concern.

In March of 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as the ACA, was signed into law. The law reforms aspects of the private health insurance industry and expands access to health insurance for millions of Americans. The ACA’s interconnected reforms include expanded Medicaid coverage, elimination of pre-existing condition exclusions, and a minimum coverage requirement (or “individual mandate”). These reforms are essential to expanding care and prevention strategies in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court likely will decide the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Lambda Legal united national HIV advocates in support of the ACA when we filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case Dept of HHS V. Florida. When the ACA was enacted, only 17% of Americans with HIV had private health insurance. In the individual insurance market, people living with HIV are generally considered “uninsurable” and are routinely rejected when they apply for coverage because they have a pre-existing condition. Even when these individuals find an insurance company to cover them, most states have no rating limits, allowing insurers to charge prohibitively expensive premiums.

Currently, Medicaid provides health insurance programs for the very poor and people with disabilities, but in most states, a disability determination based on HIV requires an AIDS diagnosis. This has created a “catch-22:” only once a person’s HIV progresses to AIDS does s/he become eligible for the medications that would have prevented AIDS from developing.   While the federal government provides funding for some HIV-related services through the Ryan White program, this overburdened system is increasingly unable to provide necessary care to people living with HIV.
The ACA is designed to address this problem by eliminating pre-existing condition exclusions and requiring that everyone acquire health insurance.  We’ve already seen the benefits of a minimum coverage requirement for people living with HIV. In 2006, Massachusetts enacted health care reform legislation similar to the ACA, and between 2005 and 2008, Massachusetts had a 37% decrease in HIV infections while the nation had an 8% increase.

All of us care about and need affordable health care—especially those who have pre-existing conditions and often fall through the cracks of our current broken system—like people with HIV. It is for that reason all eyes are on the nation’s high court as it reviews this historic piece of legislation this term.

Los defensores de la comunidad GLBT hicieron presión para que el gobierno acepte las aplicaciones para tarjeta verde basadas en la familia. Argumentaron que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) se niega a al menos mantener esas aplicaciones y que esto está separando las familias GLBT.

Como puede que sepas, aunque la Administración de Obama ya no defiende DOMA (Acta de Defensa del Matrimonio), sigue enforzándola al menos en el contexto de inmigración. La Administración ha mantenido su postura a pesar de dos recientes reglas de jueces federales que declararon a DOMA como inconstitucional. Lo que los defensores querían en esta reunión era que la Administración al menos pusiera las aplicaciones de parejas GLBT bi-nacionales casadas en espera, en lugar de simplemente negarlas, mientras se determina qué fin tendrá DOMA, ya sea mediante acción del Congreso o mediante una determinación final en la Corte Suprema de los EE.UU.

Rachel Tiven, director ejecutivo de Igualdad en Inmigración, dijo “Queremos dejarle claro a la Administración que esto es una prioridad para nosotros.” Y agregó “En muchas, muchas reuniones durante los pasados seis meses, con diferentes personas y diferentes agencias, (la Administración) se ha apresurado a decir que nuestros argumentos han sido escuchados. Aunque es desconcertante ver que nuestra comunidad es tratada de esa manera, no es de sorprender, después de todo es un año electoral. Aun más, dadas las alternativas (como Romney, Gingrich, o Santorum), nuestras posibilidades para negociar se ven limitadas.

Sin embargo, creo que la defensa por los derechos de igualdad, especialmente en un año de elecciones es nuestra arma más poderosa. Por primera vez en más de una generación, los asuntos sociales parecen estar al frente y centro en las elecciones presidenciales de este año. The DOMA Battle

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice held a meeting with LGBT advocates from Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Human Rights Campaign, Immigration Equality, and Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders. The agenda for this meeting included immigration issues relating to LGBT bi-national couples.

LGBT advocates pressed their case that the government should accept family-based green card applications. They argued that the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) refusal to at least hold these applications in abeyance is tearing LGBT families apart.

As you may know, although the Obama Administration is no longer defending DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), it is nevertheless enforcing it at least within the immigration context. The Administration has maintained this posture despite two recent rulings from federal judges that DOMA is unconstitutional. What the advocates wanted at this meeting was for the Administration to at least put applications from married LGBT bi-national couples on hold rather than denying them, while the fate of DOMA is ultimately determined, either through congressional action or a final ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rachel Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality, said 

“We wanted to make clear to the administration that this is a priority for us.” She added “In many, many meetings over the past six months, with different players and different agencies, [the administration] has been quick to say, without hesitation, that our legal arguments are quite sound. So it’s frustrating to hear this idea from them that it’s basically no big deal for individuals to fall out of lawful status. Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights “To hold green cards in abeyance simply maintains the status quo and is not inconsistent with the administration’s decision to enforce DOMA.”

Though it’s disappointing to see our community getting treated as such, it is not surprising; after all it is an election year. Furthermore, given the alternatives (i.e. Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum), our ability to bargain may seem limited.

However, I believe that advocacy for equal rights, especially in an election year, are our most powerful tool. For the first time in more than a generation, social issues appear to be front and center in this year’s presidential elections. We must mobilize and have our voices heard. Keep the pressure on until we are treated equally under the law.

Los Centros de Control de Enfermedades y Prevención (CDC por sus siglas en inglés) definen la salud sexual como el estado de bienestar físico, afectivo, mental y social en relación a la sexualidad. Este concepto se enfoca también en evitar los resultados negativos de salud a consecuencia de comportamientos sexuales poco saludables.

En comparación con la comunidad heterosexual, la población de hombres que tienen relaciones sexuales con hombres (HSH), que se identifican como gays y bisexuales o que no se identifican, hay mayores tasas de VIH y otras infecciones de transmisión sexual (ITS), consumo de tabaco y drogas ilegales y depresión.

De acuerdo a CDC algunos de los factores que nos ponen más a riesgo de estas enfermedades son: el conformismo en relación al riesgo de infección por VIH, especialmente entre los hombres gays y bisexuales más jóvenes; la dificultad de mantener comportamientos seguros en cada encuentro sexual de manera constante y de por vida y también, la falta de conocimiento de los síntomas de algunas ITS.

De igual forma la homofobia en algunos proveedores médicos y el estigma pueden obstaculizar que nuestra comunidad gay busque y reciba servicios médicos adecuados.

¿Qué otras medidas puedes tomar para proteger tu salud?
Aliméntate de manera saludable. (2) Mantén un peso saludable. (3) Haz ejercicio de manera habitual. (4) No fumes. (5) Limita el consumo de alcohol. (6) Hazte pruebas para medir tu colesterol. (7) Pruebas de detección de cáncer de próstata, de testículos, de colon y anal. (8) Controla tu presión arterial. (9) visita a tu doctor con regularidad.

Una buena manera de empezar a tomar control sobre tu salud es haciéndote la prueba del VIH. Se recomienda hacerse las pruebas con mayor frecuencia (cada tres a seis meses) si tienes parejas múltiples o anónimas, tienes relaciones sexuales bajo el consumo de alcohol y drogas recreativas o tus parejas sexuales participan en este tipo de actividades. What is a Healthy Gay Man?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The idea of health can be explained as the efficiency of metabolism and functions of a living being at the micro (cellular) and macro (social). Thus, health can be analyzed from two angles: that of physical health (including sexual health) and mental health.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines Sexual Health as the state of physical, emotional, mental, and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality. This concept emphasizes health and wellness as well as the avoidance of negative health outcomes that result from unhealthy sexual behaviors.

Compared to the heterosexual community, Men who Have Sex with Men (MSM) gay and non-gay identified have higher rates of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), as well as substance abuse/use, and report a MH illness such depression.

According to the CDC, there are many factors that contribute to the higher rates of HIV and STDs among gay and bisexual men. These factors include high prevalence of HIV and other STDs among MSM which increases the risk of disease exposure and limits access to medical preventative services and retention in care. Other factors are complacency about HIV risk, particularly among young gay and bisexual men; difficulty of consistently maintaining safe behaviors with every sexual encounter over the course of a lifetime and lack of awareness of syphilis symptoms and forms of transmission. Additionally, the issue of homophobia among care providers creates barriers to our gay community when seeking appropriate health services.

What other steps can you take to protect your health?
Eat a healthy diet. (2) Maintain a healthy weight. (3) Exercise regularly. (4) Avoid smoking. (5) Limit/Reduce alcohol use. (6) Routine Cholesterol screenings. (7) Routine Cancer screenings. (8) Routine blood pressure screenings. (9) Routine full medical physical.

An excellent way to start taking care of your health is to get an HIV test and know your status. The recommendation is to get tested every three to six months—if you have multiple or anonymous partners, have sex in conjunction with drug use, or have sex partners that participate in these activities.
