Indulge This Summer In Your Wellbeing

Summer in Southern California is full of great things: perfect weather, sun-soaked beaches, Pride festivals, and outdoor activities.  This can be a time when we take advantage of all that summer has to offer. Oftentimes substances, like alcohol, are used to liven up the party.  We ask our friends or family, “What should I bring?” The answer is almost always: “Una cheve, a beer!” Although we might not drink all the time, it can sometimes lead to trouble.  Some of us believe we know our tolerance and can stop before losing control.  However, we often forget that our inhibitions can be affected while under the influence of substances like alcohol.  Imagine having a few drinks and suddenly seeing the person of your dreams across a crowded room. Imagine flirting, having a good time, and kicking back a few more drinks with your dream lover. Next thing you know, your dream lover is lying in bed next to you the following morning and last night seems too hazy to remember!

All joking aside, the bottom line is there are risks involved when using substances while partying. While under the influence of alcohol, it is easier to contemplate trying other substances, and mixing substances can have a deadly affect.  An excessive consumption of substances can also further weaken your immune system, affecting your overall health.  Additionally, if you are taking any medications, substance use can also further complicate your health conditions.  Lastly, using substances can lead to poor choices with serious consequences, such as the spread of HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.  Drinking is not wrong as long as it’s done responsibly.

Playing safe ensures your health for a fun and vibrant summer season and for many more seasons to come. This summer season can be a time to try new things, so why not invent the most awesomely non-alcoholic cocktail EVER. Enjoy your summer!  Virgin Margarita, anyone?
