Alberto: Te encuentras en el medio de una serie de presentaciones en Italia, háblanos de los lugares donde te estás presentando.
India: Estoy en Italia porque en Roma y en Milán tengo conciertos el sábado y el domingo (24 y 25 de julio). Es un festival muy grande (Festival Latinoamericano), ellos viven la música latina, hay muchos grupos que viajan de Cuba, de Colombia, de Santo Domingo, de Venezuela, de Puerto Rico. Es un festival muy grande, estoy contenta, emocionada porque el año pasado estuve acá y había mucha gente latina.

Alberto: Tengo entendido que el sábado 24 vas a estar como representante de la cultura salsera.
India: Sí amor mio, voy a estar representando la música salsa, que es importantísimo para mi, es el cuarto año que estoy en este festival tan grande. Hay tantas banderas, y escucho que gritan mi nombre y son de tantos países diferentes.

Alberto: Después de tantas presentaciones ¿todavía te sorprende el recibimiento de la gente?
India: Me sorprende porque uno no se imagina que la gente todavía aman y escuchan la música no solamente mia sino de muchos artistas. Todavía me sorprende y me pongo nerviosa, por eso es que ya no tomo café, porque el café me altera más los nervios.

Alberto: Antes de cada presentación ¿te preocupa que algo pueda salir mal?
India: Siempre el sonido, me preocupo que el sonido no esté bien. En estos festivales siempre hay buen equipo y gente que ayuda a que los instrumentos, las voces y todo salga bien.

Alberto: Y para el domingo 25 también tienes una presentación importante en Roma.
India: Tengo una presentación que también es interesante porque vamos a estar una hora y media en concierto con mi orquesta, están viajando los músicos de Nueva York para encontrarse conmigo.

Alberto: ¿Cuánta gente viaja para presentarse contigo?
India: Como 14 a 16 personas. Hay chicos que se llevan los instrumentos, pero mucho equipo ya está acá, nos los prestan a todos nosotros. Hacemos un ensayo muy grande con la orquesta y al otro día es el concierto.

Alberto: Estás con un disco nuevo, háblanos de “Única”.
India: Estoy muy contenta con el disco, el amigo mio Santiago Larenmati me dijo “India, tengo la canción espectacular, es italiana, pero yo sé que con la letra latina va a ser una canción para ti y cuando yo escuché Estúpida me enamoré de la canción, fue la primera canción que grabamos del disco y fue el primer corte que lanzamos también. Es una historia donde yo me veo en el espejo y ya que una vez en mi vida me he sentido estúpida también y he hecho decisiones malas especialmente en el amor. Estúpida es una canción fuerte, que te hace pensar, hay personas que aun siguen en relaciones donde son maltratadas, es una canción que te abre los ojos.

Alberto: ¿Qué decisiones en tu vida haz tomado y de las cuales después te has arrepentido?
India: En el amor, hay veces que uno no escoge una pareja buena, todo es color de rosa y de momento…uf, ay Dios mio, ¿qué he hecho yo? Yo creo que eso le ha pasado a todo el mundo, es como una gran bendición si no tienes esa mala suerte, es una bendición de Dios.

Alberto: ¿Cómo te trata el amor en el presente India?
India: Por ahora en vez de ser estúpida soy inteligente, porque he escogido a alguien que yo siento que es una persona dulce porque es cariñoso, atento y caballeroso. Se lleva bien con mi mama y eso es importante, porque cuando a ella no le gusta una pareja ella me dice “no me gusta ese hombre para ti” y tarde o temprano siempre tiene la razón. Le dije “mama, le gusta este muchacho”, y me dijo “que educado es”. Se sienta en la mesa a tomarse su cafecito y hablar con él. Quiere decir que yo creo que me saqué la lotería, ¿no? Si mama dice que sí estamos bien.

Alberto: ¿Cuánto tiempo tienes con este galán?
India: Bueno, yo lo conozco a él por tres años, él tenía novia y yo también tenía novio, y a los dos nos fue muy mal, antes que nada era un gran amigo en su momento, él tiene una mirada como un perrido que ha conquistado mi alma porque él me escucha, me gusta hablar, soy muy alegra, y él me escucha, comparte conmigo, me invita a bailar, ama a los animales, tenemos mucho en común, es una persona humilde, eso es muy importante para mi. Me siento feliz, me siento contenta, solamente que extraño muchísimo a mis perritos, ya pronto después de esta gira regreso a mi casita, para poder darles cariñitos y besarlos, que se han vuelto locos conmigo, cuando regreso a la casa y me ven empiezan a brincar de lado a lado, se pelean por mi amor y a mi me encanta, estoy loca por sentir esa alegría.

Alberto: ¿Dónde vives actualmente?
India: En Caguas, Puerto Rico. Hace como ocho añitos, toda mi vida me he criado en la ciudad de Nueva York. Me desperté aquella mañana de septiembre 11, y dije “tengo que irme, o para Miami o para la Isla del Encanto” y me tocó la Isla del Encanto porque para allá siempre voy a promover y a visitar los medios, en Puerto Rico me siento contenta porque tengo muchos familiares que me quieren mucho, y amigos que me buscan y me visitan a mi casa.

Alberto: Después de tus presentaciones en Italia vas a viajar a México.
India: México es importantísimo para mi, especialmente en la ciudad de México donde hay muchos fanáticos de la salsa que aman mi música y me piden que yo regrese, también en Veracruz, allí viven y sienten la salsa.

Alberto: Háblanos también un poquito del concierto “Juntos por Primera Vez” que vas a tener en Miami ya en septiembre.
India: Ese concierto para mi me parece muy bonito, me encanta la alegría, los dos artistas que van a formar parte de este concierto como mi gran amigo Tito Nieves y también Issac Delgado, que con su voz afro-cubana siempre me ha conquistado el alma, por primera vez voy a tener la oportunidad de trabajar con ellos en escena, porque yo siempre trabajo con Tito Nieves con quien tengo una química increible, grabamos un tema que él va a incluir en su próximo disco. Esperamos que el público nos apoye.

Alberto: Vas a estar muy ocupada porque también en septiembre estarás en un festival de jazz en las Antillas Holandesas.
India: Sí, el jazz es algo grande en mi vida. Habemos salseros que hacemos jazz porque como hay mucha improvisación de piano y los metales nos gusta muchísimo eso.

Alberto: Tómate descansos entre cada presentación porque la verdad vas a estar muy ocupada, esperamos también verte pronto por Los Angeles.
India: Ay gracias mi amor, yo amo muchísimo al público de Los Angeles, durante muchos años me han brindado mucho apoyo, les quiero enviar un abrazo fuerte y un beso grande a esos fanáticos latinos que siempre me han dado mucho amor.

Oscar Reconco – En Memoria

Oscar Reconco—a community activist, spiritual leader, loyal friend and one of the most joyful individuals many of us have ever met—made his transition this past July 3 in Pahrump, Nevada. Oscar died in peace, in the company of Ron, his long-time love; his mother and sister.

Oscar, a native of Honduras, left in our hearts a proud and rich legacy of activism, spirituality and friendship. Many met Oscar through his activism (Cara a Cara Latino AIDS project, AltaMed, U.S. Census, Clínica Oscar A. Romero, Alianza, animal rights), his art (Somos Humanos, Viva!), his spirituality (metaphysician, disciple of Incan Shamans and Reverend), entrepreneur (siempre andaba vendiendo algo), and his teachings (personal advisor and featured speaker around the globe). But nothing was more important to him than Ron, his family, his community and his friends.

Everywhere Oscar went, he became a local celebrity. He moved to Pahrump in 2003, and in a matter of a few months, he had already been interviewed by local TV stations and newspapers. He would say “soy de teatro, cine, radio, televisión y ahora hasta de la Internet y Youtube.” He loved the public, and the public loved him back. Oscar was a very proud and courageous openly gay man in a very small, conservative town. His store, Ancient Secrets, became a refuge for many LGBT people, as that was one of the few safe spaces for miles around.

Oscar was in love with life, with all living beings and even non-living matter. For him, the energy of life danced everywhere: from crystals, to rocks, to human beings, to animals, to earth. Swimming with dolphins, literally and figuratively, put him in a meditative state. He used to share that some of his most profound insights about life and death came from these meditations and that the dolphins brought him to a point of enlightment. Given the state of our natural environment, it makes sense that the animals in our planet are the most vulnerable among us and have a very valuable message for us all: we are one and need to take care of each other. This was Oscar’s life commitment and message.

As committed as Oscar was about everything he got involved in, Oscar never stopped having fun! Even in his most painful moments, he would crack a joke, make a gesture, or laugh his heart out. Every time we were around him, our zest for life got recharged. As we used to say: “it is impossible to be depressed around Oscar.” After not seeing Oscar for a couple of months, many of us joked about having “Oscar Reconco withdrawals,” as we craved his company so much, and we will forever.

While our hearts are heavy with sadness, we know that Oscar wants us to celebrate life. His physical body is no longer among us, but his spirit will live in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

Well it is no surprise that two drag queens from NYC have taken advantage of the Hip-Hop popularity and have formed the first of it’s kind Drip-Drop duo, that’s Drag Hip-Hop. I believe they coined the phrase. Raven -haired Chic and blonde Sassy are two super talented, sexy, drag Hip-Hop artists that are breaking down stereotypes, walls, and anything that gets in their way to become part of the out Hip-Hop movement going on in this day. You have gay, trans, lesbian, and I’m sure many bisexual rappers but this drag duo is a first of it’s kind. We have to give it up for them and their unique style of presenting drag and Hip-Hop and making it work. Hip, Hip, Horray for the drag Queens of Hip-Hop!

Samara: When did you ladies first start doing drag?
Chic: We started doing drag our freshman year of college. By junior year, you could find Chic and Sassy running around campus in the city of Boston all the time!
Sassy: We met while attending Emerson College in Boston, MA. We had both started doing drag around then. Chic came to my dorm room to ask me if I wanted to perform with her at an open-mic night. We really didn’t know one another until that exchange. I was kind of honored that someone knew I was an aspiring drag queen and wanted to perform with me. I agreed and Chic & Sassy were born! We performed a lip-sync to “Two Girls From Littlerock,” a song performed by Jane Russell & Marilyn Monroe in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Guess who played whom?

Samara: How did the Hip-Hop come about?
Chic: We wanted to play with music, both had been fans of artists like Lil’Kim, Queen Latifah, and Beastie Boys, and decided that the rap sound would best actualize our political beliefs as well as fit with our aesthetic. Rap was born of an oppressed people and as gay, trans rappers, we thought it was the best medium to speak about our own struggles.
Sassy: We have both always been big fans of Hip-Hop, and we always wanted to explore it as an art form. We have experimented with various art forms (comedy, drama, singing, dancing), and we wanted to try something we had a deep passion for. For myself, I have always thought of Hip-Hop rhymes as the voice of the oppressed. Who in this world is more oppressed at this moment in history than men in dresses? Plus, I like the fact that it is unexpected. Chic & Sassy have always been unpredictable. We also like to be provocative. Audiences see drag queens and expect lip-syncing, but we like to surprise them.

Samara: Do you write your own lyrics/rhymes?
Chic: We do write our own lyrics. Coming from acting backgrounds, we understand the importance of language. At the same time, we believe that music is a universal language that affords us a new way to creatively speak our minds, share our beliefs and raise questions.
Sassy: Yes, we do write all of our own lyrics and music. We co-founded the NYC political comedy troupe “Gender Offenders,”
where we wrote skits as well as music. It comes very naturally to us to express ourselves through our rhymes.

Samara: Tell us about the ass song? I love that one.
Chic: “Ass Play” is a song about empowering all sexes and sexual orientations. Men have historically ruled over rap (as well as society in general), and we wanted to turn the tables. Instead of the usual male gaze that has historically sexualized women, we’ve turned our male gaze on men to sexualize them. And we just like ass!
Sassy: We are proposing a question to the audience and to society as a whole. “Is what’s good for the gander, good for the goose? and “What if the gander is dressed like a goose?” The chorus is “I like a nice tight ass, to lay my hands on it, I like to play with ass the way that men they play with tits.” We like to blur gender lines and roles.

Samara: How have people reacted to your hip-hop?
Chic: We’ve gotten a lot of really mixed reactions. Some folks really love it, and others are totally turned off by it. People often seem to not understand what we are doing. Most drag performers, especially outside of NY, use the art of lip-sync to express themselves. Chic and Sassy have something to say and our own voices are our greatest tools. Freedom of speech means anyone can express themselves freely. We like exercising this right and the beat of the music makes it fun.
Sassy: There is a growing gay “out” Hip-Hop community in Los Angeles and New York City, but most of the country equates hip-hop with masculinity. If you are not masculine, you don’t belong. We don’t want to “blend in” or assimilate or try to be something we are not. We are drag queens, we are rappers and we are glamorous. Usually people expect us to be funny, because, in their eyes, drag queens are clowns. Chic & Sassy are not clowns, and we do more than tell dirty jokes and lip-sync for straight girls’ bachelorette parties. We have our own voices, and they are our most powerful weapon.

Samara: Any hate mail from straight rappers?
Chic: No. But with the sexist, homophobic rhymes in so many of straight rappers’ works, it wouldn’t surprise me.
Sassy: No hate mail from straight rappers that I know of. We’ve just received hate mail from ignorant people, which is expected. We challenge gender roles that they have always known to be black and white and then here comes these two Drag Queens rapping about the millions of shades of gray. It opens up a new world to them. People fear the unknown.

Samara: What rap song are you promoting now?
Chic: We have a new video for “Sex Like A Man” being released very soon. This song, again, is a reflection of gender roles and societal expectations. Men seem to be able to have sex freely and without judgement. Whereas “girls” are expected to almost not have a sex drive at all. We are here to empower any and all feminine spirits. “Girl” Power!
Sassy: Our new single is called “Sex Like a Man.” The video should be out in August.

Samara: When does the whole CD come out?
Chic: With our performance schedule, day job obligations, and family obligations, it’s very hard to coordinate a time to get into the studio, but we are nearly done and would like to share our work with the world very soon! We hope to have a CD out by the end of the year!
Sassy: It’s called, “We Are… Chic’Speare & SassTronica.”

Samara: Any other rappers that you would like to work with?
Chic: Do you have Lil’ Kim’s phone number? How about Peaches or Gaga?
Sassy: Everybody! Of course our fellow out Hip-Hop artists: Soce, the Elemental Wizard, Bone Intell, Deadlee, Baron, and transgender rapper FoxxJazell. Also I love Peaches, Nicki Minaj, Princess Superstar, The Beastie Boys, Northern State. Of course, we’d love to collaborate with The Queen, Queen Latifah!

Samara: Any last words to your new fans?

I’ve been in 1 relationship with a guy and that lasted about a year give or take, was all for it and got sucked up into the whole thing. One thing led to another things got serious fast (no surprise there) and things ended. I ended things obviously. Don’t like liars, I’m all for honest genuine people but that’s hard to come across, so I’ve going out and looking and figure in time it’ll happen I don’t have to always meet guys at the club. I’d rather meet someone in the supermarket or somewhere unexpected that would be ideal.

I like honest genuine people, someone who can make me laugh constantly, I think the key to my heart is my laughter someone who can laugh at themselves and other ways better than looks and money. I like to go out on occasion club, bar, bowling, movies, beach with friends or a significant other. Usually someone I’m into I like to do things with because it’s better that way.

I don’t like clubs every week, once in a while is cool. I also don’t like annoying people who are loud and can’t handle their liquor when they go out. I dislike anyone who’s ignorant to the whole gay thing, its 2010 everybody’s GAY or gay affiliated!

HOBBIES/PASATIEMPOS
After a hard week working I like to go blow my money on clothes or drinks at the bar. On my down time I like to go to dance classes in NoHo, I love the back up dancing routines and just learning the moves after a class is over with I feel so much more alive. Eating healthy and running everyday. I also love to go tanning in the beds or doing it all natural way and laying out by the beach for a couple hours is always needed.

Luego de una semana de intenso trabajo me gusta gastar mi dinero en ropa o bebidas en un bar. En mi tiempo libre me gusta tomar clases de baile in North Hollywood, luego de aprender las rutinas me siento muy bien. Comer sano y correr todos los días. También me gusta broncearme, ya sea artificialmente o tirándome en la playa por un par de horas, para mi es algo que siempre se necesita.

SEXUAL FANTASY/FANTASIA SEXUAL
My sexual fantasy would be to hook up with one of my “straight” co-workers while working, just take a couple shots maybe get there friendship hang out after work for some time and just full on go at it. Either that or hook up with one of my girlfriends boyfriends, but I guess I can already check that off my list just doing it again would be a fantasy/reality.

”¡Una madrugada histórica!”, exclamó el reportero del noticiero Canal 5 al recibir el voto final del Senado argentino sobre el proyecto de ley concediéndole el derecho al matrimonio civil a parejas del mismo sexo. Eran las cuatro de la mañana con seis minutos en Buenos Aires cuando los legisladores votaron a una escasa mayoría (33 a 27) para aprobar la medida. Previamente aprobada por la Cámara Baja, el proyecto de ley ahora encontró su último gran obstáculo antes de llegar al escritorio de la Presidenta. Fuera en la calle, la comunidad gay, lésbica, bisexual y transgénero (GLBT), lloraban y festejaban en celebración después de esperar ansiosamente más de 14 horas en el frío por el fin del intenso debate.



El estrecho voto final sobre el proyecto en el Senado argentino es representativo de la difícil lucha que se llevó a cabo para garantizar el derecho al matrimonio civil para parejas del mismo sexo en ese país. Después de haber enfrentado una fuerte oposición de la Iglesia Católica, la cual organizó manifestaciones masivas en la oposición al proyecto de ley, la comunidad GLBT recibió el apoyo decisivo de la presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, quien abogó por la aprobación del proyecto y prometió convertirlo en ley en cuanto llegara a su escritorio.

Sin embargo, a pesar de la oposición y los retos en juicios anteriores, los argentinos triunfaron en hacer historia con este proyecto de ley. Aclamado como el primer país del continente en aprobar una legislación que otorga el matrimonio y el derecho a la adopción a las parejas del mismo sexo, Argentina pronto se convertirá en la séptima jurisdicción del mundo, y la segunda en América Latina (después de la Ciudad de México), en permitirle a parejas gays y lesbianas casarse por el civil legalmente.

En luz de lo cual parece ser una nueva dirección en el movimiento por la justicia social, tras la decisión de la corte federal en revocar la ley federal que le niega el derecho al matrimonio civil a parejas gays y lesbianas (DOMA por sus siglas en inglés) por un juez federal la semana pasada en Massachusetts y la encuesta reciente que revela un respaldo mayoritario a la igualdad en el matrimonio civil para las parejas del mismo sexo en California, así mismo como en Argentina, creo que también podemos ser triunfantes en California y en el resto de la nación.


La lucha para restaurar el matrimonio civil para parejas gays y lesbianas en California requiere del trabajo y la fuerza de todos nosotros, tanto si nos identificados GLBT o heterosexuales. Nuestro primer paso es vivir nuestras vidas con verdad y sinceridad como personas abiertamente GLBT y aliados. Al mismo tiempo tenemos que iniciar conversaciones productivas con nuestros seres queridos, nuestros amigos, nuestros vecinos y compañeros de trabajo sobre la importancia de apoyar la igualdad completa para todos.

En Argentina, donde el catolicismo es reconocido como la religión oficial y más del 90 por ciento de la población se identifica como católica, hemos aprendido que el ser católico y cristiano no te impide respaldar el derecho al matrimonio civil para parejas del mismo sexo. De hecho, tenemos que alejarnos del intento de encontrar un grupo en la minoría para culpar la falta de progreso, sin tomar en cuenta su idioma, raza étnica y religión y en lugar de ello enfocarnos en mover la opinión pública sobre el tema. Como nuestros colegas en Argentina, debemos determinarnos en ser exitosos. En celebrar la solidaridad con la comunidad GLBT de Argentina, este momento victorioso por la igualdad social, también tenemos que renovar nuestro compromiso de hablar a todo el mundo sobre la promesa de nuestra nación de la igualdad completa para todos.

Argentina’s new law legalizing marriage for same-sex couples adds new hope to the marriage equality fight in California.

“A historical dawn!” exclaimed Canal 5 Noticias news anchor upon receiving the final count of Argentine’s Senate vote on the bill granting marriage rights to same-sex couples. It was 4:06 AM in Buenos Aires when legislators voted in a slim majority (33-27) to approve the measure. Previously passed by the lower house, the bill now encountered its last major hurdle before heading to the President’s desk. Outside in the streets, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community cried and cheered in celebration after anxiously waiting 14 hours in the frigid cold for the heated debate to end.

The narrow vote on the marriage bill in the Argentine Senate is representative of the hard fought campaign to ensure equal marriage rights for same-sex couples in the country. Having endured strong opposition from the Catholic Church, which organized mass rallies and protests in opposition to the bill, marriage equality supporters received a decisive boost from President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who advocated for the bill’s passage and promised to sign into law once it reached her desk.

Yet despite the stiff opposition and the previous court setbacks Argentines were able to usher in the landmark piece of legislation. Heralded as the first South American nation to pass legislation granting marriage and adoption rights to same-sex couples, Argentina will soon become the seventh jurisdiction in the world, and the second in Latin America (after Mexico City), to allow gay and lesbian couples to legally wed. It light of this momentum, following the federal court decision striking down the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) by a Massachusetts federal judge last week and the recent poll finding of majority support for equal marriage rights for same-sex couples in California. I believe we too can be triumphant in California and in the rest of the nation.

But the uphill struggle to win marriage back will take the work and strength from all of us, whether you are LGBT-identified or straight. Our first and most important step requires us to live our lives truthfully as openly LGBT people and allies while simultaneously engaging in fruitful and productive conversations with our loved ones, our friends, our co-workers and neighbors about the importance of supporting equal rights for all.

In Argentina, where Catholicism is recognized as the official religion and over 90 percent of the population identifies as Catholic, we’ve also learned that Catholics and Christians alike are not necessarily opponents of marriage equality. Similarly, we must move away from scapegoating a minority group of all linguistic, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, and instead focus our energy on moving public opinion on the issue. Much like the fight for equal marriage rights in Argentina, we must exercise determination and perseverance. While we should celebrate in solidarity with the LGBT community in Argentina in this victorious moment for social equality, we must also resolve to recommit ourselves to talking to everyone around us about our nation’s promise of full equality for all.

Me gustaría compartir con ustedes una historia verídica de cómo llegué a una posición de liderazgo en una organización global que acredita y desarrolla los estándares para la profesión de coaching. El coaching es un proceso desafiante que tiene como objetivo maximizar el potencial humano para alcanzar objetivos personales y profesionales. La ICF (International Coach Federation) es la asociación global de coaches, líder en el mundo entero con más de 15, 000 miembros en 90 países. Aunque me hice miembro de la ICF en el 2003, empecé a participar en el capítulo de la ICF de Los Angeles en el 2008.

En las primeras clases educativas que participé, tuve la impresión de que algunas sesiones eran muy buenas y otras muy aburridas. Pensé, que si ayudaba a traer buenos presentadores, podrían beneficiarse tanto mis colegas como yo mismo. Se me ocurrió ofrecerme como voluntario pero no tomé acción. A final de año, durante la conferencia internacional de la ICF en Montreal, me sentí parte de una organización realmente global. Estaba en una conferencia con 1,300 personas de más de 50 países.

Durante la conferencia se habló mucho de nuestro compromiso como coaches para hacer una diferencia a nivel global y alcanzar un mayor bienestar en la vida de las personas.

Al final de la conferencia sentí que necesitaba involucrarme más, que estaba comprometido con esa visión. Hubo un cambio. Me di cuenta que lo importante no era lo que la ICF me podía dar a mi pero como podía involucrarme en la ICF para participar de hacer el mundo un lugar mejor para todos. Al final de la conferencia me acerqué al Director de la Conferencia, Jeff, le di mi tarjeta, le indiqué que tenía experiencia organizando conferencias y me ofrecí para ayudar en la conferencia para el año siguiente. En Diciembre el Board de ICF Los Angeles votó y me aceptó como un nuevo miembro del Board, en el rol de Co-Director de Programas Educativos junto con Tara. En Febrero recibo un llamado de Denise, Directora de Educación de la ICF en el que me invita a participar en el steering committee para la conferencia de Orlando en Diciembre del 2009. Acepté gustosamente porque me pidió que me enfocara en el área de coaching y liderazgo que es uno de mis temas preferidos. Cuando terminé la llamada busque en el diccionario que significaba “steering”. Me pregunte: ¿En que me metí? Steering significa de cabecera, había aceptado formar parte del comité administrativo organizador de la conferencia!

Empecé mis dos roles de liderazgo con mucho entusiasmo, sin embargo a los dos meses estaba llamando al Presidente de ICF LA para presentar mi resignación. Esto no es para mí, le dije. No es lo que esperaba. Tara, mi co-chair de Educación, no contesta mis llamados, no hacía seguimiento de nuestro trabajo, yo no podía tomar decisiones, y estaba frustrado. Keith me escucha pacientemente y me dice: “te tengo confianza y te doy toda la autoridad para que hagas todo lo que tengas que hacer para que las reuniones educativas sean exitosas”. Me desafió a crear lo que necesitara para que la experiencia funcionara para mí. Acepté la invitación.

Por lo general, las reuniones mensuales del capítulo fueron muy exitosas pero hubo una que fue un verdadero desastre. El tema era el desarrollo de negocios de un coach y el salón estaba más lleno que nunca. Casi 100 personas. La presentadora resultó muy aburrida y no estaba bien preparada. Esta experiencia fue un poco humillante. Particularmente cuando miraba las caras de la gente durmiéndose y al final cuando una persona me pidió que le devolviera el pago por la sesión por estar desconforme con el programa. Esta experiencia me enseñó a ser más humilde y re significar mi experiencia como miembro que se quejaba el año anterior por la calidad de las presentaciones.

Te invito a que reflexiones sobre cómo criticas a tus colegas y amigos y si te tomas el tiempo para ponerte en sus zapatos. También aprendí que como líderes podemos equivocarnos y que no todo lo que hagamos va a salir bien. Pero que de todas maneras tenemos que poner toda nuestra pasión y compromiso. Saber que hicimos lo mejor que pudimos y estar preparados tanto para las victorias como para el rechazo. En lugares de liderazgo siempre vamos a encontrarmos con personas que nos aprecian y otras que no. En mi nuevo rol de Miembro de la Comisión Directiva Global de la ICF estoy disfrutando la oportunidad de hacer una diferencia el desarrollo de la profesión de coaching. Te invito que busques oportunidades de liderazgo en tu comunidad donde puedas aplicar tu pasión y compromiso para hacer una diferencia en tus comunidades.

R: Debe ayudar. Aunque la FMLA (por sus siglas en inglés) todavía no te da permiso para ausentarte del trabajo para cuidar a una pareja enferma, la clarificación avanzada en la Interpretación de Administrador por el Departamento del Trabajo sí pone a todos los padres en igualdad de condiciones. Da a los empleados GLBT el mismo derecho que sus compañero heterosexuales para cuidar a un niño enfermo, incluso si ese niño no es biológico o adoptado. Si eres uno de los cuidadores principales, eres elegible.

El Congreso aprobó a FMLA en 1993. Dice que los empleados públicos o las personas que trabajan en lugares de trabajo privados que cuentan con más de 50 empleados, generalmente tienen derecho a 12 semanas de ausencia permitida sin pago para cuidar a un padre, un esposo, o un niño con una “condición grave de salud.” También permite que los padres nuevos tomen tiempo para cuidar a un recién nacido o un niño adoptado hace poco. Antes de esta clarificación de la ley, habrías esperado el mismo respeto de tu papel como padre sólo si tenías la suerte de vivir en un estado con adopciones por parte de un segundo padre. Si no era ese el caso, como te enteraste el año pasado, corrías el riesgo de que se te negara el mencionado respeto – y serías víctima de un doloroso doble estándar. Y como tú, muchos entre nosotros no tenemos acceso a leyes que nos permitan formalizar nuestra relación con el niño de nuestra pareja.

Recuerda que todavía tendrás que cumplir con todos los criterios de la FMLA, como duración del empleo, para un padre que quiera tomar una ausencia sin pago. Pero vemos esto como una señal de que las políticas federales ya empiezan a ponerse al día con las maneras en que la gente de este país realmente vive su vida. Los miles de niños americanos que viven con madres o padres gays, lesbianas, bisexuales o personas transgénero merecen tener a ambos padres para cuidarles cuando enferman sin poner en riesgo el trabajo de ninguno de ellos. Cada recién nacido o recién adoptado tiene la misma necesidad a establecer un vínculo con sus nuevos padres, y la interpretación de la FMLA asegura que las nuevas familias empiecen bien, sin importar si están encabezadas por padres gays o heteros.

Q: Last year, I asked my boss for medical leave to care for my eight-year-old son who had been diagnosed with leukemia. We’ve raised him together since the day he was born, but I was denied leave because I’m not his biological mother and second-parent adoptions are unavailable in my state. Would the new interpretation of the Family and Medical Leave Act that President Obama announced in June have helped?

A: It should. While FMLA still won’t allow you to take leave to care for a sick partner, the clarification set forth in the June 22 Administrator’s Interpretation by the Department of Labor does put all parents on equal footing. It gives LGBT employees the same right as their heterosexual co-workers to care for a sick child, even if that child is non-biological or non-adoptive. If you are one of the primary caretakers, you’re eligible.

Congress passed the Family and Medical Leave Act in 1993. It says that public employees or people who work for private worksites with 50 or more employees are generally entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a parent, spouse, son or daughter with “a serious health condition.” It also allows new parents time off to care for a newborn or recently adopted child. Before this recent clarification of the law, you could be assured of equal respect for your parenting role only if you were lucky enough to live in a state that offered second-parent adoption. If not, as you found out last year, you ran the risk of being turned down–the victim of a painful double standard. And like you, many of us don’t have access to laws that allow us to formalize our relationship with a partner’s child.

Keep in mind that you will still need to meet all the FMLA eligibility criteria for a parent to take unpaid leave, such as length of employment. But we see this as a sign that federal policies are finally starting to catch up with the ways people in this country actually live their lives. The thousands of American children that live with lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender parents deserve to have both parents be able to care for them when they’re sick without putting anyone’s job in jeopardy. And every newborn child and newly-placed infant has the same need to bond with his or her new parents, and the FMLA interpretation ensures that new families get off on the right foot, whether headed by straight or gay parents.
