Alberto: ¿Te divertiste escribiendo El Feo?

Kany García is a very good Puerto Rican singer, and although she has only a few years as professional singer, she’s now promoting her second album “Boleto de Entrada”, and her first promotional single is “Feliz”. I talked with this talented girl to know what makes her “feliz”.

Alberto: Your second album fills all the expectations, the title sounds to me like appropriated for a first album “Boleto de Entrada” (entrance ticket).
Kany: With this album I have had musically grow, if you liked the first one you will love the second one.

Alberto: Do you feel the necessity to consolidate your presence in the music world with this second album?
Kany: Definitely, I believe that anybody with a first album feels that the second one is a reaffirmation, is a continuity, is like saying “I want to be here and I want it to last a long time”. A second album is one of the biggest challenges.

Alberto: Do you feel the same sensation of not knowing if the public will like it or not?
Kany: I think that there’s always an internal voice saying “well, will people really enjoy this?” But that voice is not as constant as with the first album, with the second you feel that you already have a public waiting, that they really enjoy your music, and that makes a second album less stressful.

Alberto: ¿Have you always been called Kany or did it surge as your artistic name?
Kany: I have always been called Kany.

Alberto: What is your real name?
Kany: I never use it, it’s Encarnita, they killed me.

Alberto: You are a vocalist, composer, musician. Do you write all the songs for your albums?
Kany: All the songs for the first and the second albums, thanks to God.

Alberto: You also play different instruments, which ones?
Kany: Since I was six I play the violoncello, I have played it my whole life, and when I wanted to sing discovered the guitar. I can play some electric bass, although not as well as the violoncello and the guitar.

Alberto: You must have dedicated a lot of time to compose to be able to complete a second album on a relatively short time.
Kany: It’s not like if someone tells me “now you have to write 30 songs”, the thing is that I never stop writing, I’m releasing my second album but I continue writing, when the opportunity comes to prepare another album you have the material you have been working on. It took eight months to complete the recording of my second album, my first album was released in 2007 but was recorded in 2006, I had two years and a half to work on my second album, there was plenty of time to write and to prepare everything.

Alberto: Writing must be something that you enjoy a lot, because you spend many hours doing it.
Kany: Sure, I’m of the idea that in life you have to do what you like the most, and to live from what you like to do, if that’s possible. In my case, to write and to say stories is what I like the most, and if people enjoy that, then we are all happy.

Alberto: Did you have fun writing El feo?
Kany: I had a lot of fun with El Feo, and then sharing it with Tego, he wrote his part and it’s very funny. He has a story behind this song’s title because he calls himself “The Ugly Guy of All the Pretty Girls” and that was perfect with what I was writing for that song. This added credibility to the song.

Alberto: By listening to your songs, one can say that you feel very proud of being from Puerto Rico. Politically, what would you like the future of the island be like?
Kany: Politically, well, that’s very uncertain. To think on the future of my island is difficult, because on one hand one say “well, the ideal situation would be to be an independent country and to be self-sufficient” but that is not a reality. And to think on a future we can barely think about is complicated as well because we have many years as part of the United States and more than thinking on what should be the ideal, we have to think on what can be an immediate possibility. And well, to think on an immediate possibility is not the same as to ask ourselves what is the ideal situation. The ideal situation for me would be this, to be totally independents, and to have an independent economy, but at this moment that is not a reality for Puerto Rico.

Alberto: You are starting the promotion of your album with the song Feliz, tell us about this song.
Kany: Well, look, Feliz is a song that relates a lot with me regarding my background, when I started wanting to sing professionally and recorded my first album I went to knock on doors with my demo…I went to different music companies, nothing happened at the moment, it took years for me to be prepared and to recognize why not and what I have to do to make things work, until the moment that someone said “yes” and that yes made some wonderful things happen. In the case of Feliz I presented it as a possible candidate to be part of my second album, and everybody said “no”, I did finish my album, and someone said “listen, why don’t you record Feliz in the study like an experiment just to see how it sounds,” we did it and my music company ends falling in love with it, the song forms part of the album, and at the end it’s the first single. For me, it’s a song that defines the album, it’s a new episode, it’s a song going from not having any possibility to grow stronger and stronger, those are the songs to be aware of.

Alberto: Your biography says that your song Feliz reflects how the album feels, is your album happy in general?
Kany: No, I feel that not in general. It’s a happy album when we talk about the music, because it contains many elements. There are acoustic ballads, there are ballads with piano and strings, there are ballads with electric guitar and keyboard, some of them are good to dance, some sound very “fork”, some others have a rock sound recreating the 50’s, all of this make the album very happy in the musical part. But I say that it’s not happy in general because if you hear the lyrics, it’s a strong album, and some songs are “love ending” stories.

Alberto: If you fall in love with a priest, but he doesn’t take the first move, would you try to conquest him? (her father was a priest)
Kany: No, I don’t think so. My father was a priest and I saw all the difficulties he went trough, it was very complicated. I think that in order for that to happen, the priest needed not to be a priest anymore, I have been raised with respect towards these issues, I wont even think of that as a possibility.

Alberto: How about someone that ones was a priest but he’s no longer one, in that case would you take the first move?
Kany: Yes, if he’s not a priest anymore, why not? After he has asked the Pope and he’s not a priest, there’s no reason at all.

Alberto: Let’s talk about your plans and things you’re doing to promote your second album.
Kany: Well, I’ll tell you, Boleto de Entrada was out on September 22, we went to Puerto Rico first, then the United States, I’ll be in Mexico since the middle of October until the end of 2009. In Mexico I’ll be doing a little bit of everything, shows, presentations, promoting the album, and in January of 2010 I’ll start a tour from Mexico to many other countries.

We wish all the best to Kany with her second album, and we wish her to be FELIZ. For questions or comments about this interview send me an e-mail to aorozco@adelantemagazine.com
