Bienestar Human Services es una organización que brinda servicios a la comunidad, entre la mayoría de las personas que reciben ayuda se encuentran personas gays VIH positivas.
Recientemente se dio la alianza entre Bienestar con el popular locutor de Super Estrella 107.1 Keven como su “Embajador por la Igualdad y la Justicia Social”. Me reuní con Keven para platicar sobre la importancia y el compromiso de ser la imagen de esta organización.
Alberto: Háblanos un poco sobre tu trayectoria hasta el tiempo presente.
Keven: Soy un chavo de 28 años, nacido en Los Angeles pero criado en el estado mexicano de Colima. A los 20 años me vine para acá, comencé a trabajar en una compañía de uniformes, yo descargaba los camiones, y me da orgullo decirlo porque gracias a Dios he podido superar al triple, es como conseguir la meta. Imagínate trabajando en camiones, uniformes grasosos, luego las lavodoras…asi me fui, tuve dos que tres part-times, uno en una tienda de ropa, y otro en un lugar parecido a Starbucks, hacía cinnamons…en Colima estudié Letras y Comunicación por cuatro semestres, empecé a trabajar en la radio en el área de promociones, a menos de un año hice un demo y en Reventón Super Estrella me dijo el asistente del jefe que le gustaría que fuera parte del equipo de locutores…me empezaron a dejar los fines de semana en las madrugadas, luego en la tarde los domingos, luego todas las madrugadas, cubriendo diferentes horarios, hasta llegar al horario de 3pm a 8pm.
Alberto: ¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de estar trabajando para la radio?
Keven: La gente, siempre lo digo, el contacto con la gente.
Alberto: Cuando estás hablándole a la gente al aire, ¿sientes que esás siendo tú mismo o sientes que estás jugando un personaje?
Keven: Definitivamente pienso y siento que siempre soy yo. Asi como estoy hablando ahorita le hablo a una persona. Porque tratando de ocultar tu persona no llegas a nada, no se identifica la gente, no hace click, tu personalidad te identifica a donde quiera que vayas, si estás con tu familia, en un evento, con los amigos.
Alberto: Recientemente Bienestar te escogió para que los representes como “Embajador por la Igualdad y la Justicia Social”, ¿Qué es esto y qué es lo que tienes que hacer como tal?
Keven: Más que nada llevar el mensaje que sí se puede, y defender los derechos de todos porque cuando estaba en las madrugadas en la radio siempre me llamaba una que otra persona y me decía que…estaban hasta llorando, hay historias para contar demaciado…desde violados, que “no me haceptan”, que “tengo que ocultar”, “le miento a mi mujer”, hay tantas cosas que es como que si puedo hacer yo algo, creeme que está en mi ayudar, y además que me encanta, en eso trabajo, entonces es ser una voz que pueda ayudar a otra persona, a mi nada me cuesta.
Alberto: ¿Hay cosas específicas que tienes que hacer al aceptar ese nombramiento?
Keven: Nada, es ser los ojos de Bienestar ante la gente, es como decir “dímelo a mi, yo te puedo decir qué hagas, a donde vayas”, si pasa cualquier cosa como “tengo esta enfermedad”, “en donde agarro condondes”, “que hago si no me aceptan”, yo los dirijo…ser una voz nadamás. Todo lo que involucra una organización, ahí estoy, algún desfile, alguna conferencia…estoy apoyado por todo el equipo de información, ellos me empapan de información e igual yo les pido, yo soy un representante de ellos ante la comunidad.
Alberto: Había una propuesta de Ley Matthew Shepard, para que a las personas no se les discriminara por su apariencia, preferencias sexuales, etc. Y desde la semana pasada ahora es ley, ¿qué piensas de que hayamos logrado avanzar en ese aspecto?
Keven: No estoy informado de esa ley, pero no puedes discriminar a nadie, yo lo que digo “tú haz tus cosas y es tu vida”, cada quien su vida, mientras no te metas con la mia todo está bien. Uno viene al mundo solo y se va solo. Es solo una vida, por qué discriminar a una persona, somos seres humanos, tenemos todos diferentes culturas pero al final somos todos seres humanos.
Alberto: También algo en lo que me gustaría que nos dieras tu opinión es sobre la eliminación de la prohibición que existía de inmigrar a los Estados Unidos si tienes VIH.
Keven: Está comprobado que una persona…como el dueño de Starbucks, es VIH positivo, no deja de ser persona y da trabajos a gente que lo necesita. La gente está mal informada a lo mejor. Ya está comprobado que no es tan fácil contagiar el VIH, obviamente hay que tener el doble de cuidado, es más el tabú de ese tema.
Alberto: ¿Eres gay?
Keven: No, no soy.
Alberto: ¿Si lo fueras tendrías algún inconveniente de decirlo?
Keven: No lo soy, pero si lo fuera no tendría ningún problema, me siento complacido con la vida, me siento realizado en todo aspecto.
Alberto: ¿Sigues illendo para Colima?
Keven: Sí, precisamente estaba viendo lo de los vuelos porque quiero ir para el primero de enero, tengo un evento familiar.
Alberto: Tienes novia?
Keven: Sí, tengo novia, pero ahí estamos, no hay planes, me encantaría ser papá, como ya voy llegando a los treinta siento que ya es hora de…son diez años de estar echando pachanga. Cada diez años ha estado cambiando mi vida.
Alberto: Dices que sientes que has realizado ya tus metas, pero uno siempre está pensando en cosas que le gustaría hacer, ¿en tu caso cuáles son esas cosas que te gustaría hacer?
Keven: Actuar, o escribir, pero siempre en los medios de comunicación. Bailar y modelar ya lo he hecho, y lo hago cada que surge la oportunidad. Actuar es como que la siguiente etapa.
Alberto: ¿Algo que quieras agregar sobre tu naciente relación entre Bienestar y tú?
Keven: Yo llegué a Bienestar sin saber que tan grande era, simplemente yo fui a las oficinas y vi cuanta gente trabaja para Bienestar y de que manera, todo lo tienen super controlado, hay trabajadores sociales, supervisores, directores de promoción, una cosa impresionante…yo creo que Bienestar se merece más que mil aplausos, y ya por 20 años. No es fácil que una organización se mantenga por 20 años, es un mérito para toda la comunidad porque es de ellos y para ellos. Bienestar apoya a las personas con comida, con ayuda a la vivienda, es una organización que ayuda a los demás. Cualquier cosa que la comunidad pueda hacer por Bienestar es bueno porque nunca sabes cuando puedas necesitar de sus servicios…”el que obra mal se le pudre el tamal”

Keven, The New Image of BIENESTAR

Bienestar Human Services is an organization that offers services to the community, especially to the gay community. Recently, Keven a popular radio personality from Super Estrella 107.1 joined Bienestar as their “Ambassador for Equality and Social Justice”. I met with Keven to talk about the importance and the compromise of being the image for this organization.
Alberto: Tell us about your background.
Keven: In December I’ll be 28 years old, was born in Los Angeles and raise in the Mexican state of Colima. I came to live here when I was 20, started working for a uniforms company, I was unloading the trucks, and I feel proud of telling you this because I’ve been able to conquer different goals after that. Can you imagine, working in big trucks, greasy uniforms, then the laundry…then I had different jobs, in a clothing store and in a place similar to a Starbucks, I was preparing cinnamon rolls…Back in Colima I studied Communications for four semesters…I started working on the promotions department of the radio station, one day I recorded a demo and during a “Reventón Super Estrella” the boss assistant told me that he would like me to be part of the team as a radio personality…I started working at night, then on weekends, and now I work on the air from 3 pm to 8 pm.
Alberto: What do you enjoy the most when you’re on the air?
Keven: The people, I always say it, the contact with people.
Alberto: When you are on the air, do you feel like you reflect your real personality or do you feel like you’re playing a different character?
Keven: I definitely think and feel that I’m the same person. The same way that I’m talking to you now. Trying to hide your own personality doesn’t take you anywhere, there’s not a connection with people, your personality identifies you wherever you go, no matter if you are with your family, your friends, a social event, etc.
Alberto: Recently, you became Bienestar’s “Ambassador for Equality and Social Justice”, What this means and what do you have to do representing them?
Keven: It’s getting out a positive message that we can do anything we really wish, and to defend the rights of everyone. When I was working on the radio at night, I received many calls telling me…they were crying, there are many stories to tell…from violations to “they don’t accept me”, “I have to hide it”, “I lie to my wife”, there’s too much to do, and if I can do a little something to help others, I’ll do it.
Alberto: Are there any specific activities where you have to participate as part of being the image of Bienestar?
Keven: No, it’s only being the eyes of Bienestar for other people, it’s like saying “talk to me, I can tell you what to do, where to go”, for different issues like “I have this disease”, “where can I find free condoms”, “what can I do if my family don’t accept me”, I can address them with the different services that Bienestar offers…I’m their voice. There might be some activities as an organization, and I’ll be there, perhaps a parade, a conference…I have the support of their team, they give me all the information I need, and I represent them with the community.
Alberto: This week, the Matthew Shepard Act had become a law, this new law protects people against discrimination because of looks, genre, etc. We have advanced a step towards equality, what are your thoughts about it?
Keven: I’m not familiarized with this law, but against discrimination, “live your life, it’s yours”, every person has to live his own life, of course not affecting the lives of other people around you. There’s no reason for discrimination, we are all humans, we have different culture backgrounds but at the end we are all humans.
Alberto: And what’s your opinion on the end of the “HIV Bar”? (The HIV+ status was an impediment to travel to the United States)
Keven: Let me mention the owner of Starbucks as an example, he is HIV positive, he gives work to many people, he is a normal person, and like him, there are many people. There’s misinformation about this issue, it’s proved that it’s not that easy to transmit the HIV virus, obviously there are some safe practices and precautions, but it’s more like a taboo still.
Alberto: Are you gay?
Keven: No, I’m not.
Alberto: If you were gay, would it be an inconvenient for you to be open about it?
Keven: I’m not, but I don’t have any problem with being myself, I’m happy with my life, I feel realized.
Alberto: How often do you go to Colima?
Keven: I was just checking information on flights because I want to go in January, I have an event with my family there.
Alberto: Do you have a girlfriend?
Keven: Yes, I have a girlfriend, there are not plans, but I would love to be a dad, I’m almost 30, so it’s time for a change…for the last 10 years it has been all party time. Every ten years there’s big change in my life.
Alberto: You said you feel realized. But we are always thinking on new things we would like to do, in your case, what are those things that you still would like to do?
Keven: To be an actor, also I would like to write, but always doing something related to communications. Sometimes I dance and do modeling, and I do it every time that there’s the opportunity, but I feel like acting should be the next step for me.
Alberto: Is there something you would like to add about your new relation with Bienestar?
Keven: I arrived to Bienestar without really knowing how big the company was, I went to the offices and saw how many people work with Bienestar and they are hard working people, everything is under control, there are social workers, supervisors, promotion directors, something really impressive…I think that Bienestar deserves all our recognition, and they have 20 years as an organization. It’s not easy for an organization to serve the community for 20 years. Bienestar helps people with food, with help for housing, etc. Anything that you can do for Bienestar is good because you never know when you will need to receive that help…”
