¿Como pasaste el verano? En casa tratando de no contagiarte. Saliste a protestar la violencia policiaca contra la comunidad negra y, también, latina. Tal vez eres una empleada esencial y continuabas tu labor sin las protección necesaria, preocupada de no solo contagiarte a ti sino también a tu familia. Tal vez experimentaste todo esto y más.
Con tantas protestas estoy esperanzado que resulten en cambios verdaderos y duraderos. El cambio social depende de cambios de opinión y cambios de acción. Las protestas son el primer paso, el voto otro paso, y la vigilancia y reacción continua los pasos siguientes. Después de ser elegidas, los y las políticas necesitan escuchar de ti y saber tus gustos y disgustos.
Por ejemplo, recientemente, nuestro gobernador actual, Gavin Newsom, traicionó a la comunidad latina con su poder de vetar proyectos de ley y deberíamos dejárselo saber. Bloqueó proyectos de ley que protegerían trabajadoras domésticas (SB 1257) y todos que perdieron su empleo por COVID (AB 3216). También bloqueó un proyecto de ley que hubiera establecido clases sobre razas étnicas estadounidenses como requisito educacional (AB 331). Para estudiantes Latinos les ayuda conocer mas sobre la historia de su comunidad.
En el tema de la vivienda también nos decepcionó, vetando una ley que hubiera establecido una agencia estatal contra el desamparo (AB 1845) y otro proyecto de ley que hubiera declarado como política estatal que todos en California tenemos el derecho a vivienda segura y económica (AB 2405). Este ultimo proyecto de ley era más una declaración de nuestros valores que de política ya que, según el proyecto de ley, el derecho dependería que hubiera fondos disponibles. Y aun así el gobernador lo veto. Finalmente, y tal vez mas cruel, es su oposición a la Proposición 21, algo que necesitamos para controlar las rentas altas.
Como pueden ver el hecho que él o la política sean del partido demócrata no garantiza políticas más progresistas. Hay muchos demócratas que aceptan dinero de corporaciones grandes y de multibillonarios para sus campañas. Ese dinero los vincula a las prioridades de esos intereses corporativos, no a los intereses de la comunidad. ¿Es por esto que el Gobernador veto tantos proyectos de ley que iban en contra del poder las corporaciones?

The betrayal of Governor Newsom
How did you spend the summer? At home trying not to infect you. You went out to protest the police violence against the black community and, also, Latino. Perhaps you are an essential employee and you continued your work without the necessary protection, worried about not only infecting you but also your family. Maybe you experienced all of this and more.
I am hopeful that with so many protests we will see real and lasting change. Social change depends on changes of opinion and changes in actions. Protests are the first step, voting is another step, and vigilance and reaction are the following steps. After being elected, politicians need to hear from you and know your likes and dislikes.
For example, recently our current Governor, Gavin Newsom, betrayed the Latino community with his power to veto bills and we should let him know. It blocked bills that would protect domestic workers (SB 1257) and all who lost their jobs to COVID (AB 3216). It also blocked a bill that would have established classes on American ethnicity as an educational requirement (AB 331). For Latino students it helps them learn more about the history of their community.
On the issue of housing he also disappointed us, vetoing a law that would have established a state agency against homelessness (AB 1845) and another bill that would have declared as state policy that everyone in California has the right to safe and affordable housing ( AB 2405). This latest bill was more of a statement of our values than of policy since, according to the bill, the right would depend on the availability of funds. And yet the governor vetoed it. Finally, and perhaps more cruel, is your opposition to Proposition 21, something we need to control high rents.
As you can see, the fact that he or the policy is from the Democratic Party does not guarantee more progressive policies. There are many Democrats who accept money from large corporations and billionaires for their campaigns. That money ties them to the priorities of those corporate interests, not to the interests of the community. Is this why the Governor vetoed so many bills that went against corporate power?
