Lila Downs : Celebrating the “Day of The Dead’

On October 24, Hollywood Forever Cemetery will have its 10th Anniversary Celebration of The Day Of The Dead, and what a better singer than Lila Downs to have a concert as part of the celebration. She represents the true folkloric Mexican music, you can’t miss it. I had a phone conversation with Lila to talk about this tradition, her new album and her plans.

Alberto: Your most recent album is a compilation of hits. Are you including hits from the very beginning of your career?
Lila: Yes. The idea was to come up with a CD containing as many hits as possible, with all our favorites.

Alberto: Which ones are your favorites?
Lila: Well, I think that La Cama de Piedra is a very special song for me, and La Sandunga is a very unique song from Oaxaca, La Cumbia del Mole is a song that I wrote some time ago. That song is very happy and I wrote it for our female Mexican cooks.

Alberto: Why is La Cama de Piedra your favorite song?
Lila: It’s a song that I’ve been listening to since I was a child and I remember that there was some kind of mystery to it. I think that there are songs that are like metaphors, sometimes someone might say “hmm, what is that about a stone bed,” it might sound strange, but for me it’s like the strength and the hardness of it. It’s like the image of an impossible love, of a difficult love, and that’s what the song is about.

Alberto: WOMEX, the main “World Music” company included your album Shake Away as one of the 10 best “world music” albums of 2009, I imagine that it represents great satisfaction for you.
Lila: They handle music from all around the world, and it’s an honor to be part of that list.

Alberto: You had surgery only a few days ago, how are you feeling from your appendicitis surgery?
Lila: Well, I’m feeling a lot better thank God. Thanks for asking. I’m eating on time, not drinking tequila or mescal. Everything is going fine, the body needs its attentions.

Alberto: Recently you were part of a tribute to Chavela Vargas, are you two good friends?
Lila: Yes, well…we barely knew each other when we participated in Salma’s movie Frida, but I obviously was familiar with the music of Doña Chavela. My mother had some albums of hers, but it wasn’t until we sang together in Madrid five or six years ago, she was so nice with me, we were chatting. She was talking about the friendship she had with José Alfredo Jiménez and Tomás Méndez when singing at El Tenampa, and how they used to get drunk during the weekends. It’s fun to get to know that woman. During the tribute we were not able to talk because she is not as strong as she used to be. They had to take her out in a wheelchair. But it’s a miracle that she’s still singing at her age.

Alberto: After some decades from now, looking back on time, how would you like to be remembered?
Lila: Well, for me it has been very important the fight for social justice, and to help those who are discriminated against, to fight racism. There’s discrimination against those who came from indigenous blood. I would like to be remembered for fighting against that, for defending the immigrants rights and I hope that my voice can be an inspiration for people in elected positions of the government of the United States. Also, helping to change attitudes against Latinos and other immigrants that come from other countries too.

Alberto: About the current proposal from President Obama to achieve health reform, there are people who are opposed to it because they believe that it may benefit unducumented immigrants in this country. Obama has said that it won’t. It sounds very inhumane to me. What is your opinion?
Lila: That goes against God’s will. Going against the humane part of a society demonstrates the values in a society. And when that society can’t demonstrate its good faith towards the people doing important jobs, such as washing dishes, cleaning floors and taking care of children it’s a shame. That is happening not only in the United States, that happens in many places. I heard Obama’s speech when he said that, and I felt a cold stub, but he had to say that so the Republicans don’t go against it. I felt sad and angry. We need to continue working for our goals and creating conscience in the community. I think that many people know that, but there are also others who play the fool about it.

Alberto: We will see you performing on October 24th at Hollywood Forever in celebration of The Day Of The Dead; What does this celebration represent for you?
Lila: It’s an important celebration in Mexico. In Oaxaca, it’s the occasion when my mom wants me to be with her so we can cook some mole for my grandmother. And for my dad, they come to visit us. We do an altar, but in a special way, Mixteco style. We tie together some mandarins and pieces of cane forming an arc to decorate the offerings and that arc represents the entrance to the infra-world. If there’s no arc, according to my mom, our loved ones can’t see where they have to come to receive their offerings. It’s a very spiritual moment when we share a good time. We share anecdotes of our loved ones and I believe that it’s sane and helpful so we don’t forget our loved ones. I think that people who forget their loved ones are people who also loose their greatfulness to the past in all aspects. It’s very fortunate to have these traditions.

Alberto: Besides, remembering our loved ones, why do you think it’s important to keep this tradition?
Lila: Well, it’s also an important ritual in life’s celebration. Dead helps to generate life too. Our loved ones come to visit us. Starting on October 28, the babies come, then our youth dead loved ones and finally the adults. I think that it’s important to continue the traditions and cult to our ancestors because sometimes it’s seen in a wrong way, it’s seen in a morbid way or as a cult to the evil. We must understand that dead is a veneration in every culture, it’s part of a reality and everyone will have to die.

Alberto: Do you have details about the time you’ll be singing and what you’ll be singing at the Day Of The Dead Celebration?
Lila: Yes, we’ll be like an hour and a half with our concert, we’ll be presenting our favorite songs, but we will also include songs from the last album “Shake Away”, some songs dedicated to the immigrants, some in English, others in Spanish, some dedicated to my state Oaxaca. We’ll be celebrating and at the same time we’ll put some melancholy with the rancheras, and we’ll dance with some cumbias.

Alberto: There’s something that worries me and it for sure also worries you, it’s the recurrent violence in Mexico lately, related to drug dealers.
Lila: Well, I think it also depends on us staying united as a community, little by little we will have to do so, we have to sacrifice some time, usually we don’t have extra time, but we need to organize neighborhood meetings, get together with other communities, because it’s a grave sickness, and it’s sad to us as Mexicans.

Alberto: You are living in Coyoacan, Mexico. Do you feel secure living there?
Lila: You have to take precautions, when you go out to the streets you have to watch out, there are moments when you feel that fear, like when you take a taxi, but thanks to God we also have the opportunity of traveling to Oaxaca, and spend part of the year in New York.

Alberto: We need to have faith about the future getting better instead of worst, right?
Lila: Yeah, and the United States also needs a reality check, and to know that the only reason why there’s drug trafficking is because of the many illegal merchandises that goes to the country. I think that by changing some laws related to some drugs many problems would be avoided.

Alberto: When you perform in Europe, what do you feel about getting your music to those places?
Lila: Very proud, but also with the responsibility of showing the huge diversity of our country, the different types of music that we have, music that even in our country is not completely broadcasted, but thanks to some media bringing us their support we are able to spread out our culture, our music. Our people love our music, but the media doesn’t cover it appropriately. In Europe and the United States we have the opportunity of counting with the support of the media and that’s how in Mexico the media realize how valuable is our folklore, that happens when we go out. But that doesn’t mean that people in Mexico don’t appreciate us, on the contrary, I think that there’s a lot of people that truly would love to see more of our folklore and it’s sad that we don’t give them more.

Alberto: So, it’s not that the public in general don’t want to hear folkloric music, but it’s the media not covering it?
Lila: Yes, it’s the media. Here in Mexico, the most popular Television and Radio stations are more commercial, I don’t want to say exactly “commercial” because our music might also become commercial, but they are not covering it. From time to time we are invited to Televisa or TV Azteca and we go, but the thing is that they are not really interested, that’s the problem. Here in Mexico we have some channels that support us, such as Once México and Canal 22, and we also have some wonderful options on local channels by cable.

Alberto: Tell us about your future plans.
Lila: I’m preparing a new recording with mariachi, and we want to invite Mariachi Femenil de El Paso, TX. That’s what I whish, but let’s see what’s God will. I’m also preparing some boleros. My husband Paul and I are composing the music for a musical in New York, it’s based on the book by Laura Esquivel “Like Water for Chocolate”, we are working on these projects.

We wish success to all of these plans from Lila. It’s always so nice chatting with her. For comments about this interview please send me an e-mail to aorozco@adelantemagazine.com
