Luis García – Mis Batallas Contra La Obesidad Y Bullying Por Ser Gay

How would you describe your childhood?
¡Very unhappy! I come from a very traditional and religious family-I was raised by a very homophobic father that made my life very difficult since the age of 8 years old. I felt like I was living in hell due to not being able to reveal my sexual orientation and for many years I listened to my father tell me: “you are worthless” “you will never be anyone in life” you are such a girl, you cry for everything.”

How have you lived your life as gay male since you were a little boy?
I was always very scared of my father’s reaction towards me. My desires for men were nurtured by looking at masculine male figures in magazines and fantasizing about the other boys at school-I would fantasize that the boys at school would be my boyfriend when we got older.

Bullying at School:
At school I endured a lot of bullying and verbal abuse due to my homosexuality,
My classmates would make derogatory gestures and make negative comments towards me to due to my sexual orientation. I would feel horrible when they would make feminine or sexual gestures with the intensions of “outing me” and to reassure others that I was indeed gay. The bullying made me come to a point where I hated my body, my voice and even other gay people that would walk by my neighborhood. I was afraid that the gay men in my neighborhood would find out that I was in many ways envious of their liberty and freedom of expression.

My eating disorder, always wanting to eat more…
The abuse from my father, the discrimination and bullying experience at school with classmates made me turn to food and eat excessively. I felt that I was worthless and would not matter to anyone if I was fat. I never managed my food intake or diet. I would eat excessively and after would make myself throw up-it was a weird sensation that I felt yet enjoyed. I was in a really bad place; I came to a point where I even made negative opinions and comments about myself. I would make the following comments: “look at you, you are horrible” You look like a whale” “no one will love you because you are fat and ugly” You are not a normal man like everyone else.” I would cry myself to sleep and pray to God to take my life away because I never had the courage to take my own life. My health was at risk due to my obesity; I tried to diet and manage the situation but I was unsuccessful. I was facing a huge problem and I didn’t have the courage to confront it. When I attempted to lose weight and “come out of the closet” I would have flashbacks of the abuse and discrimination endured by my father and classmates and then I would fall back in to the same cycle of low self-esteem and bad eating habits.

I saw the light at the end of the tunnel:
Unfortunately, my father had serious legal problems and was later deported. It was then, that I had the courage to come out and change my life around. A year ago, I began to have health issues; my heart felt like it was going to stop. I was dizzy and had trouble waking up. It was then when I decided to “come out of the closet” and begin to lose weight. I began to eat healthier and diminish my poor eating habits; the change occurred when I began to heal my heart and soul of all the discrimination, abuse and rejection endured as a child. For the past 8 months, I have seen my body change for the better. I finally accept myself for who I am and what I am.
Don’t let anyone stop you from being who you are or achieving what you want to be. With dedication and discipline, everything and anything is possible.
