Luis López: Lider Local Pide Su Voto Para Ganar El 5 De Junio

Luis Lopez: Community Leader Seeks Our Votes to Win June 5 Election

I am president of L.A.’s East Area Planning Commission and Democratic candidate for the open seat in our 51st Assembly District. My district takes in all of East L.A., where I was born, and Northeast L.A., where I have lived for a decade while serving my neighbors and community.

I ask for your vote to win our primary election on June 5. Your help before Election Day, along with your friends and family members, will help us prevail.

People ask my why I want to go to the Assembly now, in a time of cuts and distrust. I tell them it’s because we need proven leadership to fight for the services that were there for me, that people depend on, and to fill our revenue hole and fix our budget. Voters don’t want more Sacramento here in our communities. They want leadership from our communities, to fight for our communities, in the legislature. That’s how we get our state working and restore faith and fairness in governing.

When I was just 8 years old, I lost my mother to kidney disease. But thanks to educators and caring public servants who helped give me a fighting chance, I went on to graduate from public school and gain degrees from Pomona College and Harvard University. I am now a nonprofit healthcare director at L.A.’s largest community health center.

An openly gay Latino, I co-founded Honor PAC in 2005 and am now its past president. It is the first statewide LGBT political action committee for Latina/os anywhere in the nation dedicated to empowering LGBT Latinas/os and winning equality. I was a leader in the fight against Prop 8 in 2008, raising money to open the campaign’s East L.A. office and shaping English and Spanish messages for Latinos and other voters. I am a past board member of AIDS Action, now AIDS United. I’m committed to the fight against HIV and AIDS, and I’ll work to renew our state’s commitment to treatment, life-enhancing care, and prevention. I’ve also been active in Democratic Party politics. In 2009, the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee awarded me recognition as “Democrat of the Year.”

My campaign is the first in the country by a 2012 state candidate to gain the endorsement of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund. I have raised more than $240,000, nearly all from individual donors, more than 1,000 in total, and have by far the most donors and the most money raised from the people of my 51st District. Major endorsements include Congresswoman Judy Chu; former Congressman and veteran Esteban Torres; former state supreme court justice (retired) and district voter Carlos Moreno; the California National Organization for Women; Equality California; the Foothills Democratic Club; the Stonewall Democratic Club; United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA); Machinists union Local 311; Sheet Metal Workers Local 105; Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod; Senator Mark Leno; Assemblymembers Tom Ammiano and Rich Gordon, L.A. Councilmember Bill Rosendahl; former California Congressman and disability activist Tony Coelho; former state Senator Sheila Kuehl; and former Congressional candidate from the district Emanuel Pleitez. I also have the endorsement of former Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg, the former LAUSD school board president, L.A. City Councilmember, and Education Committee Chair in the Assembly who represented much of the 51st District during her 3 full terms as a lawmaker.

I am prepared to fight for and deliver on quality healthcare, school funding, good jobs and worker protections, a fair share of resources for Los Angeles, and long-term solutions to our state’s revenue problem.

I live in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles with my partner Hans Johnson. For more information, to give, and to get involved in my push toward victory in our June 5 open primary, go to www.lopezforassembly.com. With your help and your vote, we will win on June 5 and be one step closer to restoring the California dream for all of us in Los Angeles.
