We Need a Renter Pride Day!
Por Francisco Dueñas

Many of us celebrated the outcome of the race for President, and we are counting the days until Donald Trump leaves the White House. Dozens of books have been written about the damage Donald Trump has done to the country. I think many young people and immigrants understood this and went out to vote for the first time.

In California, we also broke turnout records, with 80% of registered voters turning out. But it’s good to dig a little into the data. In Los Angeles County, the most populous county and one full of Latinos, only 74% participated, while richer and white counties such as Santa Barbara (84%) and Orange County (87%) exceeded 80% . Perhaps it does not sound like a big difference, but that 10% difference represents almost half a million votes, which were not cast. And they represent change that didn’t happen.

Were you a voter this year?

Regarding the state propositions, several good policies that would have made a difference in our lives failed such as Proposition 15, 16 and 21. I think they failed, in part, out of the fear of voters to impose more taxes on businesses in times of a pandemic (which Proposition 15 would have done).

It’s understandable. You think that we are all having a bad time and you don’t want to give companies any more reason to lay you off. And, yes, many people are unemployed. But, not everyone is suffering. On the contrary, US billionaires have increased their wealth by a trillion during this pandemic. It is the reason why the state of California just announced a surplus in its annual budget.

Political campaigns are supposed to inform voters and drive them to the polls. But during a campaign it is difficult to identify and overturn political beliefs that limit your proposals. We discovered this with the fight for civil marriage for same-sex couples. In 2008, after Proposition 8 was approved, which deprived this right of same-sex couples, a study was done asking gay and lesbian people if they spoke of the discrimination they faced with their loved ones and others in their social circles (for example, coworkers) and their hopes of marrying one day. It turned out many gay and lesbian people never discussed these topics with their loved ones. I imagine that it may be the same for other issues, like being a tenant.

That’s why we need a Renter Pride Day. What day should it be? On this day we would celebrate the 17 million Californians who rent their home, and it would be an opportunity to talk about what you face as a tenant. For some, being a tenant is the best option for them, for others it is the only option. Whatever the situation, it would be a day of dialogue. Maybe you are a homeowner, but your relatives are tenants. Be an ally and ask them how it feels to be a renter. Every day in the community homeownership is promoted, but on what day is the well-being of the tenants promoted? Let’s make it happen. Would you participate?
