Saber es Poder, ¡Hazte la Prueba!/Knowledge is Power, Get tested!
Se estima que aproximadamente 250 mil personas del más del millón de personas que viven con el VIH/SIDA en los Estados Unidos no saben de su estatus del VIH. Con esta estimación de un porcentaje tan alto, la necesidad de crear conciencia en prevención y la prueba es cada vez más importante. En 1995 el Día Nacional De la Prueba del VIH el 27 de junio fue implementado para promover el diagnóstico temprano y continúa siendo una gran oportunidad de incrementar la conciencia y motivar a la comunidad a que se hagan la prueba.
Aproximadamente 7 nuevas infecciones del VIH ocurren cada día en el Condado de Los Angeles y los latinos somos el grupo minoritario más impactado. Un alto número de latinos son diagnosticados muy tarde en el curso de la infección, en muchas ocasiones estas personas descubren su estatus al mismo tiempo que reciben el diagnóstico de SIDA, lo que representa un riesgo de desarrollar infecciones oportunistas que pueden ser fatales debido a que su sistema inmunológico se encuentra debilitado.
Las ventajas de un diagnóstico temprano son que las personas que viven con el VIH y que no están al tanto de su estatus, se enterarán de su estatus y serán referidas a cuidado médico y tratamiento y tendrán la oportunidad de vivir una vida más saludable. Para quienes reciben el diagnóstico negativo ganan control de su salud en general y aprenden prácticas que podrán evitar que se pongan en riesgo de adquirir el VIH.
Mientras que continúa el ritmo de la infección, la necesidad de las pruebas continúa incrementándose. En un esfuerzo para promover el conocimiento del estatus del VIH, Bienestar ofrece la prueba rápida del VIH a través de sus once centros en cuatro condados. La prueba rápida se ofrece en 20 minutos. El procedimiento es confidencial y te permite hablar con el consejero individualmente y aprender formas de prevención dependiendo de tus prácticas. La prueba rápida no es solo conveniente sino también fácil de hacerse; solo se requiere una pequeña cantidad de sangre de una pequeña incisión en el dedo o de una simple muestra de fluido oral.

With such a high estimate, the need for awareness in prevention and testing is evermore important. Since 1995, June 27 is recognized as the National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) to promote early diagnosis through HIV-testing and continues to be an opportunity to increase awareness and motivate the community to get tested.
Approximately 7 HIV infections take place every day in Los Angeles County and Latinos are the highest impacted minority group. A large number of Latinos get diagnosed late, in many occasions these individuals find out about their status at the same time with an AIDS diagnosis, therefore putting them at risk of developing opportunistic infections that may result fatal due to their compromised immune system.
The advantages of early diagnosis for the individuals living with HIV will find out their status and will be refer to appropriate care and treatment and will have the opportunity to live a healthier life. People who receive a negative result gain control over their health by learning practices that could prevent them from putting themselves at risk.
As the rate of infections continues to rise, the need for testing continues to increase. In an effort to promote knowledge of HIV status, Bienestar offers free rapid HIV testing throughout its eleven centers in four counties. Rapid testing offers a result in 20 minutes. The procedure is confidential and allows you the opportunity to talk to HIV counselors one on one and find out methods of prevention depending on your practices. Rapid testing is not only convenient but also easy to perform; only requiring a small amount of blood from a painless finger prick or from a simple oral fluid sample.
