P: ¿Cómo surgió la idea de abrir Bench and Bar en Oakland?
R: Hace ya 31 años que Bench and Bar existe en la ciudad de Oakland, la administración actual del negocio lo ha tenido por casi 10 años, de ahí algunos de sus miembros han sido parte de el por más de 18 años por lo que los otros 13 años restantes pertenecen a la 2da. generación que lo operaba. Cabe mencionar que Bench and Bar originalmente operó como un pequeño bar/lounge donde un Juez de la Corte Superior del Condado de Alameda fue el dueño original.

P: Acaban de abrir un segundo club en el área de Oakland, ¿qué hace diferente a este nuevo club de Bench and Bar?
R: Tecnicamente la apertura de este nuevo club fue para reubicar a Bench and Bar, la antigua locación fue renombrada como Club 21. La nueva locación es comparable a cualquier bar de West Hollywood, Las Vegas, Nueva York o Miami. Es un espacio que fue creado con los clientes en mente… posee un sistema de luz y sonido espectacular y áreas que permiten el total y sano esparcimiento de nuestros visitantes. Invitamos a todos los lectores de Revista Adelante a que nos visiten para que lo comprueben por si mismos. Con ahora 2 clubs a solo unas cuadras de distancia las posibilidades de diversión son extraordinarias, Bench and Bar y Club 21 presentan dos diferentes formatos de eventos.

P: Tienen un club Bench and Bar en Puerto Vallarta, México ¿cómo ha sido recibido el club allá?
R: El Bench and Bar de Puerto Vallarta desafortunadamente cerró sus puertas hace mas de un año. Cuando se adquirió hubo gran gozo pues el nombre era reconocido por muchos visitantes a este paradisiaco balneario del Pácifico, muchos factores tales como la imposición de pasaportes a ciudadanos americanos para viajar y una muy mala economía dieron como consecuencia el cierre del lugar. La experiencia fue buena y aprendimos mucho de ella.

P: ¿Ha sido difícil abrir el nuevo local en Oakland en tiempos de recesión?
R: Mientras la recesión juega un papel crucial en el desarrollo de cualquier empresa la oportunidad que se dió para reubicar a Bench and Bar llegó en un momento muy bueno para la compañía. Bench and Bar fue elegido entre más de 18 posibles candidatos para ocupar estas nuevas instalaciones, los años y la experiencia permitieron el crecimiento aún a pesar de estar en esta recesión.

P: ¿Qué planes tienen para los diferentes clubs para el 2010?
R: Los planes son muchos, ahora con 2 clubs las posibilidades de entretenimiento para la comunidad en general se duplican también, es muy pronto para saber los diferentes planes que se tienen para el 2010, conforme el nuevo año avance también serán los diferentes proyectos.

P: ¿Qué promociones están preparando para el 14 de febrero en Bench and Bar y Club 21?
R: Cuando una piensa en este momento acerca del 14 de febrero uno se imagina que falta aún mucho para esa fecha, pero cuando uno trabaja en esta industria la planeación de eventos es vital para poder convertir cualquier evento en éxito. El día del amor y la amistad caerá en domingo en el 2010, tanto Bench and Bar como Club 21 desarrollarán eventos para todo ese fin de semana. Sí quiero mencionar que el domingo 14 de febrero en el Club 21 ya se tiene programado un evento para recaudar fondos para una agencia comunitaria llamada “La Clínica de la Raza”, la planeación del evento ya está en marcha y confiamos que la comunidad apoyará a los organizadores del evento para que sea un éxito total. Aquí como en otras ocasiones el espacio es donado para apoyar a nuestra propia comunidad de Oakland. Bench and Bar por su parte celebrará el 14 de febrero con el evento que en este caso pertenece a ese 2do. domingo del mes llamado “B&B Bears” el cual se enfoca a la comunidad de osos y que estamos seguros saldrán de su invernación para divertirse como lo hacen cada mes.

What is your career background(s)?

Marty has been a television producer and in the entertainment industry for over 15 years and Julio has been in the club and nightlife business since the mid nineties.

What made you both want to be club owners and promoters?

Julio and I have been close friends since we were kids and Julio and I were sitting in a bar a little over 10 years ago unhappy with our respective current work situations and I said ‘Julio, why don’t we just open a place of our own?’ and he turned to me and said ‘I know the spot!’ The very next day we went down to what is now CHICO and within three months we had opened our first nightclub together. I think the trick was not thinking about it and just acting on impulse. I think if we had actually thought about it we would have talked ourselves out of it!

Congratulations on your 10 year Anniversary of CHICO. How is the club doing?

Fantastic, gracias! CHICO is an amazing place and No matter what Julio and I do, CHICO will always be our first love and our baby. The customers and of course Team CHICO & the Dj’s make CHICO what it is – a damn fun party!

Overall, how is the community accepting CHICO in East LA? Do you see support for our gay community growing on the East Side?

Absolutely – I can’t tell you how much things have changed since 1999 – almost every family has out gay family members now and we think the majority of people want everybody to be equal and happy.

Tell us about your club COBRA in North Hollywood?

COBRA is an exciting nightclub for us because we get to do so many different types of nights for our community including a House/Hip Hop night – Inferno – on Wednesdays, a transgendered night, Goddess – on Thursdays – Club El with DJ Ivan on Fridays – the world famous Ole Ole with El Show de Karlotta on Saturdays and every night we get to showcase the hottest Go Go dancers in Los Angeles! Also, the last Friday of every month is Club Hombres showcasing … well, hot hombres!

How are the crowds different at each of your clubs?

Both crowds are as unique and diverse as you can imagine within and outside of the Latino Gay community. They transcend all ages, colors and backgrounds.

As businessmen, how do you feel the recession is affecting our gay
community?

It is our desire to offer our friends and clients the best possible experience with the greatest level of customer service at the lowest possible price. We believe that this is not only relevant in difficult times but in all times! Of course beyond that we offer no less then three drink specials on any given night!

What advice do you give other gay businessmen operating during this economic time?

Stay positive – Stop reading the bad news! (We gave up the Business Pages over a year ago!)

What types of community events are you doing at each club? Are you still doing fundraisers in support of Bienestar and other organizations?

We work with all worthwhile organizations that are doing good for our immediate community and our world community. We are always involved in outreach and hold at least one fundraiser a month. Any organizations we are not currently working with should feel welcomed to contact us.

What is the part of the club business you like the most?

Laughing with customers. Feeling the family of our amazing staff who make up Team CHICO and The COBRA Team.

What is the part of the club business you least like?

The end of any party – we want to keep going!

Any new promotions coming up for next year and each club?

We are excited to offer as a thank you to all of our friends in Los Angeles NO COVER at CHICO for the rest of the year (excluding the 10 year Anniversary $5 and New Years Eve $10)

COBRA is launching a new show on Sundays and beer bust from 4 to 9.

But most importantly, both clubs will be sponsoring our annual Toy Drive for orphans in TJ – please bring an unwrapped toy and pay no cover at COBRA. The Toy Drive will be held the entire month of December!
