A New Year, A New Opportunity

Why do we make New Year’s resolutions? This is a good question. People make New Year’s resolutions because they tend to reflect on the year which has passed and make changes to improve their lives for the New Year to come. The year “2011” might not have been the best year for many, but 2012 can be viewed as a fresh slate or beginning for some. A new year can mark the rebirth and new beginning, and a time for “change.” We reminisce over the year that has passed and our thoughts wander to what we could have done better. Although there are some things that might seem impossible to improve in our lives, we must also realize that “nothing gets better on its own.”

It’s about perception; how you perceive the past, may impact how you manage the present, and how you plan for the future. If you perceive 2011 has a “bad year,” with many “bad choices”, it can impact your outlook and perception for 2012. If you look at things from a positive perspective and reflect on those “mistakes and bad choices” and simply perceive those particular experiences as lessons of life, then your perception for the future may change. If you view a mistake or a bad choice as simply a lesson learned, then you have grown as an individual and you may be more optimistic for the New Year to come.

All New Year’s resolutions have in common the idea of becoming a better person. We strive to improve ourselves and yet more resolutions are broken than are kept. The fact that people keep making resolutions even when they don’t always follow through ultimately means that they have hope and a certain level of belief in their ability to change and be more of who they really want to be. In order to continue taking care of your health, and over all well-being, you must truly reflect on the previous year and identify areas that need to change. Remember, nothing gets better on its own, if you want improvement and change; you must put in the work to make those changes a reality.
