La temporada de festividades ha llegado y para algunos de nosotros es la oportunidad de apegarnos a nuestras familias y amigos. Pero para muchos de nosotros que hemos emigrado a este país en busca de un mejor mañana, se traduce a un sentimiento de anhelo y nostalgia. En la búzqueda del amor y apoyo que hemos dejado atrás, nos encontramos un poco desconcentrados en esta gran ciudad llamada Los Angeles.
Siendo una organización latina, Bienestar en verdad comprende qué tan importante es el apoyo emocional que sólo la familia y el hogar proveen. Por los últimos veinte años, nuestras puertas han continuado abiertas a nuestra comunidad latina y hemos establecido un espacio seguro que fortalece la diversidad. Nuestros grupos de apoyo semanales y nuestras charlas uno-a-uno mezclan similares experiencias al reflejar la comunidad que servimos. Nuestra similitud nos hace sentir que pertenecemos al mismo lugar y espacio, a la misma vez que celebramos el colorido y singularidad de nuestro rebozo, al identificarnos como personas gays, lesbianas, bisexuales y transgénero. Cada uno de nosotros re-enforza nuestra esencia como familia, la cual está moldeada por el amor y la aceptación.
Sobre el transcurso del año, Bienestar enlaza a nuestra gente por medio de los eventos socio-culturales que programamos y realizamos. Promovemos un espacio seguro, confidencial y libre de sustancias, para que nuestros amigos y aliados continuen conectados y disfruten lo colorida y hermosa que es nuestra cultura, pero también que se mantengan informados acerca de los retos que nuestra comunidad enfrenta, especialmente el del estigma asociado con el VIH. Juntos, retamos la ignorancia y el silencio sobre importantes problemas de salud y justicia social que nos afectan. Juntos, socializamos y aprendemos los unos de los otros, creando una familia que está unida y que tiene un techo sólido armado por esperanza, sostenimiento y unidad.
Es esta familia que se ha convertido en nuestro segundo hogar para muchos de nosotros, nuestros corazones los invitan a todos, amigos, familia, aliados; todos son la energía que mueve nuestra misión adelante. Al extrañar aquellos tamales que hacen famosa a la abuela en aquellas colonias y barrios dejados atrás, los invitamos a que nos acompañen a nuestros eventos y deleiten una taza de champurrado bien calientito. En Bienestar, sabemos que tú eres el acero que hace fuerte el futuro de nuestra comunidad latina. Decimos que “barriga llena, corazón contento,” ¿no? Nuestros corazones laten al ritmo de uno. Juntos, el VIH no tiene escape.
El Censo Nacional de los EE.UU. reporta que existimos en grandes números. Los epidemiólogos reportan estadísticas alarmantes. Los académicos nos llaman el “gigante dormido.” Para nosotros, somos gente con fuertes raíces familiares, con una historia asombrosa, un presente lleno de retos, y un futuro de promesa. Durante estos tiempos que el pasado renace, les invitamos a que sean parte del futuro que juntos construimos. En Bienestar encuentras ese apoyo, ese segundo hogar, y esa segunda familia que todos anhelamos.

One Community. One Future.
The holiday season has arrived and for some of us it is an opportunity to get closer with our families and friends. But for many of us who have immigrated to this country in search of a brighter horizon, it often times translates to a feeling of longing and nostalgia. As we search for the love and support left behind, we find ourselves a little lost in this big city called Los Angeles.
As a Latino-based organization, Bienestar truly understands how important the emotional support that only a family and a home can give. For the last twenty years, our doors have remained open to our Latino community and created a safe haven that welcomes diversity. Our weekly Support Groups and one-on-one interactions blend our shared experiences as the peers we are to the individuals we serve. Our sameness brings upon a sense of belonging, yet embracing our uniqueness as a people of color weaving the rebozo of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender identities. Each of us strengthens the essence of our familia, which is shaped of love and acceptance.
Throughout the year, Bienestar brings our people together at the various socio-cultural events we host. We foster a safe, confidential and substance-free space, so that our friends and supporters remain connected and enjoy how colorful and beautiful our culture is, but also informed of the many difficulties that our community still faces, especially around the stigma of HIV. Together, we challenge the ignorance and silence around important health and social justice issues. As one, we socialize and learn from one another, creating a familia that is united and solidly roofed by hope, resiliency, and togetherness.
It is this familia that has become a second hogar for many of us. Our hearts are open to everyone. Friends, family, allies; our history fuels our mission. As we long for those home-made tamales that abuela is famous for in our colonias and barrios we have left behind, we invite you to drop in and enjoy a cup of champurrado at our upcoming end-of-the-year celebrations. At Bienestar, we know you are the backbone of a greater future for our Latino community. We say barriga llena, corazón contento, no? Our hearts will beat as one. Together, HIV does not stand a chance.
The US Census reports we exist in great numbers. Epidemiologists report alarming statistics. Scholars refer to us as the “sleeping giant.” To us, we are people with strong family ties. An amazing history, a resilient present, and a promising tomorrow. In these times when we rekindle the past, we invite you to be a part of building our future.
