In the evenings, when we are having dinner, I put the news in Spanish. The images and stories are heartbreaking.Story after story of Latino families struggling, suffering, and finally surrendering to this pandemic. In recent weeks, the virus has taken root in the most Latino cities and neighborhoods in the country; this is a very Latino pandemic. From the Latino neighborhoods of Queens in New York City, to the agricultural fields of South Florida and now the border cities and large cities of Texas, Arizona and California.And it is not surprising. Latinos predominate in essential and, therefore, more risky jobs. If you do not have the luxury of staying at home, you leave in the morning (if you still have a home) but without the equipment you need to protect yourself. If you have money, you have time -- time to isolate yourself without negative repercussions. You don't lose your job, your home, your life. Now we are running out of time.The longer the pandemic lasts, the side effects deepen. Across the country, a massive wave of evictions is already beginning to form. According to NLIHC, in Tucson, the courts are reportedly processing twice as many evictions compared to last year. In Houston, courts are using Zoom to hear more than 2,000 eviction cases. In Denver, they prepare to serve camps of newly homeless families.In California, thanks to temporaryprotections, most families who have fallen behind in rent during the pandemic are still at home. But those protections-- that dam that is holding back a deluge of evictions-- is about to disappear for many, perhaps, as soon as August.Perhaps you think that the decisions of your political repre- sentatives do not affect you much, but in times of crisis, such as these, the impacts of those decisions are clearly marked. Governor Newsom and the leaders of the CA legislature and Congress have the power and responsibility to prevent this social disaster. At the state level, that solution is called AB 1436, the COVID Eviction Prevention & Housing Stability Act. This bill would prevent the tsunami of anticipated evictions. At the federal level, there are other bills that would do something similar.California families have already done their part; we quarantined and stayed home. That was our duty and it is what our leaders asked of us. How is it that multi- national companies have been bailed out and now thousands of families are going to lose their homes? It would be unforgivable.Let our elected leaders know that you are aware and you are not going to let so many people be pushed into homelessness for having done their duty. En las últimas semanas el virus se ha arraigado en las ciudades y los barrios más Latinos del país; esta es una pandemia muy Latina. Desde los barrios Latinos de Queens en la ciudad de Nueva York, hasta los campos agrícolas del sur de la Florida y ahora las ciudades fronterizas y las grandes urbes de Texas, Arizona y California.en California, la mayoría de familias que se han atrasado con la renta durante la pandemia aún se encuentran en casa. Latinos predominamos en los trabajos esenciales y, por ende, mas arries- gados. Si no tienes el lujo de poder quedarte en casa, sales de tu hogar (si tienes vivienda) pero sin el equipo que necesitas para prote- gerte. Si tienes dinero tienes tiempo, tiempo para aislarte sin repercusiones negativas. No pierdes tu trabajo, tu hogar, tu vida. Ahora se nos acaba el tiempo.Tal vez piensas que las decisiones de tus representantes políticos no te afectan mucho, pero en momentos de crisis, como este, se marca el impacto de esas decisiones muy claramente. El Gobernador Newsom y los líderes de la legislatura y del Congreso tienen el poder y la responsabilidad de prevenir este desastre social. Al nivel estatal, esa solución se llama el proyecto de ley AB 1436, Acta de Prevención de Desalojos por COVID-19 y para la Estabilidad de Hogares. Este proyecto de ley prevendría el tsunami de desalojos que se anticipan. Al nivel federal, hay otros proyectos de ley que harían algo similar.Mientras más dura la pandemia, los efectos secundarios se profun- dizan. A través del país, ya se comienza ver una ola masiva de desalojos formándose. Según informes, en Tucson las cortes están procesando el doble de desalojos comparado con el año pasado. En Houston, las cortes usan Zoom para tener las audiencias de más de 2,000 desalojos. En Denver, se preparan para brindarles servicios a campa- mentos de familias recientemente desamparadas después de un desalojo.Las familias de California ya hicieron su parte; guardamos la cuarentena y nos quedamos en casa. Eso fue nuestro deber y es lo que nos pidieron nuestros líderes. ¿Como es que las compañías recibieron sus subvenciones y ahora miles de familias van a perder sus hogares?
