Dear HIV, this month, the Latino/Latinx community celebrates and reflects on the impact you have made in many lives. We have been at war with you for over 40 years now and yet you are still very present and popular among Latino/Latinx men who have sex with other men, here in the United States and all over the world.
I don’t know why you have chosen this group, but the reality is, you are part of our history, our present, and hopefully not our future. Depending on whom you ask, you are either a gift that changed lives for the better and for others, you are the worst thing that has ever happened. Some of us have welcomed you into our lives while others are struggling and are in complete disbelief and denial of your arrival. It truly shows the power you have….
On October 15th, we celebrate National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), a day we reflect and increase awareness of the impact of HIV on the Hispanic/Latino communities in the United States. As of now, we are unable to defeat you, but our defense strategies are getting better with Prep and Pep and now we have Apretude-the first long-acting injected medication for HIV prevention. However, we Latino/Latinx men who have sex with other men need more than just tools such as Prep, Pep, and Apretude. As a person living with HIV for over 22 years, I reflect on my own experience with HIV. I sit and wonder why and how you came into my life and as an activist in the fight against HIV, I sit and wonder why HIV continues to impact us at such high rates even with Prep, Pep, and Apretude. HIV is not just about condomless sex. HIV is not always associated with substance use or party and play and certainly, HIV is not about all the hook-up apps at our disposal.
So, what is it? Is it our mental health that we need to reflect on? Is it our childhood traumas and daddy issues we need to heal or is it the cultural social norms and expectations that have impacted so many of us? Or do we just fall in love and/or trust our sexual partner(s) and HIV simply enters our lives? Whatever it is, we need to rethink and reshape our fight against HIV.
To our long-term HIV survivors-we thank you for all you have contributed to the fight and advances in medicine and science. To those who are newly diagnosed, I hope you find the tools and support needed to welcome this life-changing experience, and to all the Latino/Latinx men who have sex with other men who are HIV-negative, educate yourself about Prep, Pep, and Apretude and remember, our value as HIV positive people does not diminish simply because HIV entered our lives: Our lives, and identity changed because of it.

Querido VIH, este mes, la comunidad latina/latinx celebra y reflexiona sobre el impacto que has tenido en muchas vidas. Hemos estado en guerra contigo durante más de 40 años y, sin embargo, todavía estás muy presente y eres popular entre los hombres latinos/latinx que tienen relaciones sexuales con otros hombres aquí en los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo.
No sé por qué has elegido este grupo, pero la realidad es, formas parte de nuestra historia, de nuestro presente y, ojalá, no de nuestro futuro. Dependiendo a quién le preguntes, o eres un regalo que cambió vidas en una manera positiva, pero para otros eres lo peor que les ha pasado. Algunos de nosotros te hemos dado la bienvenida a nuestras vidas, mientras que otros siguen luchando con tu llegada. Realmente muestra el poder que tienes….
El 15 de octubre celebramos el Día Nacional Latino de Concientización sobre el SIDA (NLAAD), un día en el que reflexionamos y aumentamos la conciencia sobre el impacto del VIH en las comunidades hispanas/latinas en los Estados Unidos. Por ahora, no podemos derrotarte, pero nuestras estrategias de defensa están mejorando con Prep, Pep y ahora tenemos Apretude, el primer medicamento inyectable de acción prolongada para la prevención del VIH. Sin embargo, nosotros, los hombres latinos/latinx que tenemos relaciones sexuales con otros hombres, necesitamos más que herramientas como Prep, Pep y Apretude. Como persona que vive con el VIH desde hace más de 22 años, cuando reflexiono sobre mi propia experiencia con el VIH, me pregunto por qué y cómo llegaste a mi vida. Como activista en la lucha contra el VIH, también me pregunto por qué el VIH continúa afectándonos a tasas tan altas incluso con Prep, Pep y Apretude. El VIH no se trata solamente de sexo sin condón. No siempre está asociado con el uso de sustancias, y no siempre tiene que ver con todas las aplicaciones que tenemos a nuestra disposición.
¿Entonces que es? ¿Es nuestra salud mental sobre la que debemos de reflexionar? ¿Son nuestros traumas infantiles y problemas paternos los que debemos sanar o son las normas y expectativas sociales y culturales que han impactado a muchos de nosotros? ¿O simplemente nos enamoramos y/o confiamos en nuestra(s) pareja(s) sexual(es) y el VIH simplemente entra en nuestras vidas? Sea lo que sea, debemos de reflexionar nuestra lucha contra el VIH.
Para nuestros sobrevivientes del VIH a largo plazo, les agradecemos todo lo que han contribuido a la lucha y a los avances en la medicina y la ciencia. Para aquellos recién diagnosticados, espero que encuentren las herramientas y el apoyo necesario para darle la bienvenida a esta experiencia, y para todos los hombres latinos/latinx que tienen relaciones sexuales con otros hombres que son VIH negativos, infórmense sobre Prep, Pep y Apretude y recuerden, nuestro valor como personas VIH positivas no disminuye simplemente porque el VIH entró a nuestras vidas, nuestras vidas y identidad cambiaron por su llegada.
