In a parallel present, delivery man Ray Tincelli is struggling to support himself and his ailing younger brother. After a series of two-bit hustles and unsuccessful swindles, Ray takes a job in a strange new realm of the gig economy: trekking deep into the forest, pulling cable over miles of terrain to connect large, metal cubes that link together the new quantum trading market. As he gets pulled deeper into the zone, he encounters growing hostility and the threat of robot cablers, and must choose to either help his fellow workers or to get rich and get out.

After his father’s murder, his mother sends him to the city. His uncle Kosmos, a truck driver, takes care of him. Alias learns fast in the city, selling sunglasses, DVDs and cellphones, it will not take long before the boy experiences at first hand the difficulties of life, and of being different.

She changes her look, finds work as a chambermaid and makes friends with a young Slovakian stripper, Etela, and her husband Tamás, a cook. Meanwhile in Berlin, Philip is trying to manage his family, his job and his affair with Monika. Against his own convictions he has to defend a racist teenager in court, who has beaten an African man into a coma. He struggles with his role as a single parent and cannot really commit himself to Monika as his everyday life has lost meaning since Nora disappeared. The only person Philip really opens up to is the unconscious coma patient. Nora’s desire for freedom is Philip’s chain.
