ANDREW’S CHILDHOOD PASSION WAS FUELED BY PAIN, TRAUMA, AND EVEN SUICIDE ATTEMPT, IN THE PROCESS HE REDISCOVERED THE IRRESISTIBLE WILL TO LEARN, TO SUCCEED, TO LIVE AND TO LOVE.

This born and bred Angeleno always knew he was meant for a career in beauty; “I knew from early on that I wanted to be a part of an industry that makes people feel and look their very best”.

Growing up in Boyle Heights on the East-side of Los Angeles was very difficult for Andrew Velazquez to fit in. Especially being gay, in the closet and raised in a macho environment. He thanks God for the Creative Arts and his mother’s encouragement to forge forward in spite of the hostile environment he faced almost every day.

How was your growing up in Boyle Heights?
It was not smooth, especially in my adolescent years. I felt misunderstood early on by my parents…I just wanted to be “normal” no different than any other neighborhood boy. I also felt that my sexual feelings were unacceptable and thus drove me an attempt to take my own life. A bottle of pills and the cutting of my wrist I believed would lead me to a more tranquil dimension, absent of the pain and confusion I constantly experienced. Luckily, I survived, got up the next morning and off to school I went. Finding blood stains on my bedroom floor, my mother alerted my school counselor and while speaking with him in his office, blood began running down my arms. Suddenly all hell broke loose, paramedics with flashing lights and full sirens entered the center of the Roosevelt High School Quad area just as the passing bell had rung, and it seemed as all 4,000 students rushed to see me on a gurney. I recognized many faces…some crying, others looking scared and concerned and a few even encouraging me to get well. I dropped out, never to return to my neighborhood school.

I suffered through a lot of mental health issues and really had to discover on my own what it would take to care for myself resulting in moving out at the age of 16. Living away from my family, feeling rejected by others, I discovered and began to create a new family of misunderstood, artistic and creative people that also existed in the periphery of Los Angeles. I felt accepted by them which led me to accept myself for the first time. It was then, that I began to thrive.

How did you achieve your education after dropping out of HS?
I studied and received my GED and soon after began to attend LA Trade Tech at the age of 16. I studied Fashion Merchandising and Cosmetology. While still a student, I was leading Cosmetology and Makeup Master Classes and won countless competitions.

Making people look and feel beautiful is truly what Andrew does best. He began his career as the Lead Makeup Artist at Aveda Spa and then a year later moved to Gauthier Total Image Spa. His artistry evolution took off at M·A·C Cosmetics, where he spent eleven years carefully honing his technique and artistry.

Andrew has created signature looks for some of Hollywood’s brightest stars including Lady Gaga, Michelle Williams, RuPaul, Demi Levato, Neil Patrick Harris & Carmen Electra. As a makeup artist on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” Andrew regularly created the sisters red carpet ready looks and at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, he was the key makeup artist for Florence and the Machine, including applying avatar-like body makeup for her radiant dancers.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have several career achievements that I’m very proud of. One of my proudest moments is having the opportunity to share my story on television on Lifetime’s show “American Beauty Star” while showcasing what I adore – my craft and talents. Having had experience working behind the scenes of Reality TV Shows such as America’s Next Top Model and RuPaul Drag Race as a hair and makeup stylist.

The other is the publication of my book LOVE IS ART…ART IS LOVE, my 2023 CALENDAR, and my new MAKEUP PALLET cosmetic line in addition to several related products such as makeup drawings and a very stylish Fan depicting my love for my work.

What keeps you going?
My love for life and my craft. I have to say my family, my husband and my dogs have been an integral part in my growth both personally and professionally. Collectively they are my therapy. They are my biggest fans and support who continue to push me to be a better artist and human being.

ANDREW VELAZQUEZ
HOMBRE DE FUEGO
By/Por: EM Rodriguez
