Is it Possible to Maintain a Same-Sex Couple?
By: Jesús Leija /Oscar Viramontes, BIENESTAR

Same-sex couples or gay relationships have always existed in our history.  In the United States this topic has had more popularity, especially in the media and social networks, since the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage in California and 29 other states.

However despite all the advances in our laws protecting the gay community it is still very common to hear stereotypes like “Gays are very promiscuous by nature and are not capable of committing to a stable relationship”, “Gays are extremely passionate and obsessive which leads to jealousy and the failure of the relationship”, “Gays are condemned to grow old in solitude”, “Gays are incapable of relationships based on honesty”, and “In this lifestyle everyone cheats”.  Though these stereotypes are very common and can reflect on some relationships it doesn’t make them a fact for all relationships.

Finding and maintaining a relationship with someone whom you’d like to share your life with is very challenging because there aren’t model relationships to live by.  The heterosexual model relationship is not functional for the gay community; however, it gives us the ability to create our own model.

BIENESTAR believes that relationships based on love and respect also exist in the gay community.  Although we face many challenges we believe that with education and professional support we can construct healthy same sex relationships filled with honesty, health and longevity.

BIENESTAR has responded to the needs of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community for the past 25 years which is why we’ve created this new program for couples “Parejas Conscientes”.  This program consists of individual and couples counseling, biweekly support groups, and a weekend seminar catered to the couples.  Some of the topics we will discuss include : how to overcome internal homophobia, sexism and “machismo” and how its inherited through our culture, forgiveness as the key to wellbeing, the concept of family, the importance of assertive communication, sexuality, social identity, spirituality, marriage and more.

If you are currently in a relationship we invite you to be a part of “Parejas Conscientes”.  For more information please contact Jesus Leija at our Long Beach Center (562) 438-5800 or email us at jleija@bienestar.org or visit our website www.bienestar.org
