Yo comencé desde que me acuerdo con un lápiz en la mano, pasé por períodos donde dibujaba todo a través de una ventana, paisajes. Mis papás pensaban que iba a ser arquitecto pero me incliné más hacia la animación, siempre tuve un gusto por dibujos animados, desde pequeño tenía yo un proyector y pasaba los dibujos cuadro por cuadro. Lo que más me gusta dibujar son hombres, pero hay muchas cosas que me llaman la atención, creo que eso es una de las cosas que me gustan del arte, que puedes tener curiosidad hacia lo que sea.
El arte para mi es una forma de entender el mundo, procesarlo en tu cabeza y después traducirlo a lo que tú haces, las cosas que son importantes para ti ponerlas en papel.
Técnica
Cuando tenía 6 años mis padres me llevaron a una clase de arte, en cuanto acabó la clase le dije a mis papás “nunca más, porque no quiero que nadie me diga lo que tengo que dibujar”…ahora me arrepiento porque creo que es importante tener una formación formal y al mismo tiempo explorar lo que tú quieras hacer, pero eso no me lo explicaron a los 6 años.
No fue sino hasta la maestría que empecé a tomar clases de forma formal, clases de dibujo de figura humana. Durante la carrera yo estudié cine y televisión, y mi maestría fue en animación.
La mayoría de mis trabajos los hago primero usando papel y lápiz y luego los llevo a la computadora, ya sea que lo coloree o le añada detalles aqui y allá. Solía colorear con prisma-colors, pero la computadora es una gran ayuda. La fotografía como referencia te ayuda bastante, asi que también es algo que me gusta.
Materiales
He tratado un poco de oleo, acuarela, ahora la computadora…pero sinceramente me gusta el lápiz y papel, el sentimiento de la comunión que tienes con el papel, cuando encuentras esa línea perfecta que estabas buscando, no creo que la encuentras en ningún otro lado.
Mi Arte
Hago caricaturas, desnudos naturales, me gusta hacer arquitectura realista. Dibujo todo lo que me gusta. Tom of Finland es una gran influencia como artista para mi, cada mes voy al Tom of Finland Foundation, ellos tienen sesiones de dibujo, generalmente hay dos modelos, tres horas de sesión. Los dibujos de desnudos masculinos por lo general los hago con modelos en vivo, son poses de aproximadamente 20 minutos. Me gusta hacer cine, tengo algunos cortometrajes animados, trabajé una temporada en Disney, en el área de desarrollo. Mi animación ha ido a festivales de cine.
Trabajo
Actualmente estoy trabajando como diseñador gráfico en la Universidad del Sur de California, a veces me toca hacer animaciones para la universidad, hice un documental/animación para celebrar la carrera del presidente de la universidad que se retiró el año pasado. Para la universidad hice también un mural.
Since I can remember I started with a pencil on hand, went trough periods when I drew everything I could see from a window, landscapes. My parents though I was going to be an architect, but I was more inclined towards animation, animated drawings was my thing, as a young kid I had a projector and I liked to pass the drawings frame by frame. What I like to draw most is men, but there are many things that catches my attention, and I believe that’s one of the things I like about art, that you explore your curiosity about just anything.
Art for me is a way to understand the world, you can process it in your head to later translate it into the things you do, the things that are important for you, you can put them on paper.
Technic
When I was 6 years old my parents took me to an art class, after the class I told my parents “never again, because I don’t want anybody telling me what to draw”…now, I regret it because I believe that it’s important to have formal education and at the same time you can explore whatever you want to do, but nobody explained that to me back then. It wasn’t until I got my master’s that I started taking drawing classes on a formal way, drawing classes of the human figure. During my career I studied cinematography and television, and my master’s was on animation.
Most of my drawings I do I start them by using pencil on paper and then I take them to the computer, either coloring them or adding details here and there. I use to color using prism-colors, but using the computer is a big help. Photography as a reference helps a lot, so, photography is also something that I enjoy.
Materials
I have tried oil, watercolor, now also the computer…but prefer I pencil on paper, the feeling of the communion you have with the paper, when you find that perfect line that you were expecting to obtain, I don’t believe you can find it with other materials.
My Art
I draw cartoons, natural nudes. I like to do realistic architecture drawings. I draw anything I like. Tom of Finland is a great influence as an artist for me. Every month I go to the Tom of Finland Foundation, they host drawing sessions. Generally there are two models, three hours per session. The male nudes drawings are generally done with live models, they usually take up 20 min. per pose. I like cinematography, and have some animated short films. I worked for a short period at Disney, in the development area. My animation has made it into film festivals.
Work
I’m currently working as a graphic designer at the University of Southern California, sometimes I do animation for the University, I did a documentary/animation to celebrate the career of the president of the university that was retiring last year. I also did a mural for the university.
