Valentine’s Day – What does it mean for the Gay community?

Valentine’s Day is a traditional celebration in some Caucasian countries and it began to be celebrated around the world in the twentieth century. On this day lovers and friends express their love and affection and is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of St. Valentine who was a Roman priest whose religion was forbidden at that time and despite this, performed marriages in Christian churches.

However, this celebration has become an opportunity for businesses and has distorted its true meaning, but every year is a reminder of these feelings and the role they play in our lives. Love and friendship are certainly feelings that help us live a healthy and fulfilling life as gay Latino men.

Many of us have left our countries, family, loved ones and we migrated to the United States seeking a better life where we can live in dignity as gay men. At times, we are in a new environment and require the development of new friends. Sometimes the lack of social support and partner might cause a feeling of loneliness and depression that can lead to behaviors that threaten our physical and emotional wellbeing.

BIENESTAR invites you to become part of our family. To live a healthy life, we need to feel part of a community and develop new friendships in safe spaces free from discrimination and homophobia. As gay Latino men we need more than just basic information about HIV / AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

“De Ambiente” program at BIENESTAR allows English and Spanish speaking gay and bisexual men the opportunity to meet new friends and learn skills to improve their well-being and personal development to live a healthy life. BIENESTAR offers services, programs and socio-cultural activities in the Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties at our nine community centers.

Since 1989, BIENESTAR has been committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the Latino community and other underserved communities in Southern California.

BIENESTAR accomplishes this through its unique peer-to peer service model, community outreach, health education, and awareness and human rights advocacy for social justice. Visit www.BIENESTAR.org for additional information. Join us on Facebook: BIENESTAR Familia.
