ENDLESS LOVE: LONG LIVE THE VACCINATED

By Francisco Dueñas

I hope you have not lost a loved one during this pandemic. Unfortunately, I have lost several. With the passage of time, to that pain, to that grief, anger is added at all the deficiencies and helplessness that I feel when considering how many people have not yet been so moved to get vaccinated.

At the end of the day, I am disheartened by so much selfishness and distrust. By getting vaccinated, I don’t know if I will be the victim of a malevolent conspiracy plot. And I do not care. It is more important to me to know that I took all the necessary steps to protect my loved ones, to know that I took care of them in the best way I knew how.

If we all die from getting vaccinated — one day we will all have to die — I die with a clear conscience. Contrary to Juan Gabriel’s song, I know that I couldn’t have done more for them.

Maybe you think all this is just peer pressure, that I am trying to make you feel guilty and give in to getting the vaccine. No. I don’t want you to feel guilt, I want you to feel love.

If you were amazed at how quickly the COVID vaccine was made, instead of it raising suspicions, you should be impressed by how much love and goodwill is represented by all the work that this scientific miracle achieved, and feel grateful. (And it is a miracle, especially when you consider how long scientists have been searching for an HIV vaccine.)
From government officials to research scientists to brave, healthy patients who took risks to prove the effectiveness of the vaccine. All that is love, for you, and for them too.

This pandemic is a crisis, and in times of crisis solidarity increases, goodness among people, because it is necessary for survival. Thinking of the various crises we face, only united can we excel. Getting the vaccine is solidarity against COVID. Putting on a condom or taking antiretroviral medicine is solidarity against HIV. We need much more solidarity to survive global warming. But in all these cases, the future of humanity depends on you and is in your hands.

We are living in an era of so much loneliness, with so many people who feel isolated and incredulous, not so much of the science but of the goodness in humanity. They do not believe that some stranger could have worked and sacrificed for their well-being. But they have.

Someone has sacrificed for you, because you deserve it and because they recognize that your well-being is linked to theirs and their loved ones. They recognize that we are dependent on others, even more so in a crisis.

As the English poet says, no man is an island. Stop acting like one. Get vaccinated.

AMOR ETERNO:

Desafortunadamente, yo he perdido varios.

Y no me importa.
