January 20 marked the one-year anniversary of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Human Rights Campaign, the leading advocacy organization for the rights of LGBTQ+ persons along with other such groups are celebrating the advances in our rights and visibility as a community. Here are some of those advances which President Biden and VP Harris have done for our community:
First Openly Gay Member of a President’s Cabinet: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg became the first Senate-confirmed member of the president’s cabinet to be openly LGBTQ+.
First Transgender Person to be Confirmed by the Senate: Dr. Rachel Levine was confirmed as Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health & Human Services and promoted to four-star admiral. Levine, the former Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, became the first openly transgender person to be sworn into a Senate-confirmed position in March.
On his first day in office, the President issued an executive order that required the federal government to align its policies with the Supreme Court’s landmark Bostock decision.
In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court of the United States affirmed that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is a form of prohibited sex discrimination. However, the Trump Justice Department failed to adequately instruct the federal government to implement the ruling, leading to dangerous misinterpretations. That state of affairs was addressed via President Biden’s first-day order.
Within their first week in the office, the White House put out an executive order repealing the Trump-era ban on transgender military service and ensuring transgender service members are able to serve openly. In July 2017, President Trump announced a full ban on Twitter without any consultation with Pentagon leaders. President Biden, in his first week in office, issued an executive order reversing the ban.
The Department of Housing & Urban Development withdrew a Trump-era proposal to gut the equal access rule. It also protects LGBTQ+ families and ensures people seeking emergency housing are housed safely in accordance with their gender identity.
The administration formed an interagency working group focused on safety, inclusion and opportunity for transgender people.
With respect to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the economy and social services programs: Despite facing multiple, unprecedented crises and near unanimous opposition from congressional Republicans, the President and Vice President have delivered vaccination for over 200 million Americans, 75% of Americans fully vaccinated, over six million jobs created, a booming economy, historically low unemployment, the largest infrastructure investment in a generation, investments in Community Health Centers and historic progress for working families across the board.

El 20 de enero marcó el primer aniversario del presidente Joe Biden y la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris. The Human Rights Campaign, la principal organización de defensa de los derechos de las personas LGBTQ+, junto con otros grupos similares, celebran los avances en nuestros derechos y visibilidad como comunidad. Estos son algunos de esos avances que el presidente Biden y la vicepresidenta Harris han hecho por nuestra comunidad:
Primer miembro abiertamente gay del gabinete de un presidente: el secretario de Transporte, Pete Buttigieg, se convirtió en el primer miembro del gabinete del presidente confirmado por el Senado en ser abiertamente LGBTQ+.
Primera persona transgénero confirmada por el Senado: La Dra. Rachel Levine fue confirmada como Secretaria Asistente de Salud del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos y ascendida a Almirante de cuatro estrellas. Levine, ex Secretaria de Salud de la Commonwealth de Pennsylvania, se convirtió en la primera persona abiertamente transgénero en ser jurada en un puesto confirmado por el Senado en Marzo.
En su primer día en el cargo, el presidente emitió una orden ejecutiva que requería que el gobierno federal alineara sus políticas con la histórica decisión Bostock de la Corte Suprema.
En junio de 2020, la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos afirmó que la discriminación por orientación sexual e identidad de género es una forma de discriminación sexual prohibida. Sin embargo, el Departamento de Justicia de Trump no instruyó adecuadamente al gobierno federal para implementar el fallo, lo que generó peligrosas interpretaciones erróneas. Durante su primera semana en el cargo, la Casa Blanca emitió una orden ejecutiva que deroga la prohibición de la era Trump del servicio militar transgénero y garantiza que los miembros del servicio transgénero puedan servir abiertamente. En julio de 2017, el presidente Trump anunció una prohibición total de Twitter sin consultar con los líderes del Pentágono. El presidente Biden, en su primera semana en el cargo, emitió una orden ejecutiva revocando la prohibición.
El Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano retiró una propuesta de la era Trump para desmantelar la regla de igualdad de acceso. También protege a las familias LGBTQ+ y garantiza que las personas que buscan vivienda de emergencia estén alojadas de manera segura de acuerdo con su identidad de género.
La administración formó un grupo de trabajo interinstitucional centrado en la seguridad, la inclusión y las oportunidades para las personas transgénero.
Con respecto a la Pandemia de Covid-19, los programas de economía y servicios sociales: A pesar de enfrentar múltiples crisis sin precedentes y la oposición casi unánime de los republicanos del Congreso, el presidente y la vicepresidenta han vacunado a más de 200 millones de estadounidenses. 75% de los estadounidenses completamente vacunados, más de seis millones de empleos creados, una economía en auge, un desempleo históricamente bajo, la mayor inversión en infraestructura en una generación, inversiones en centros de salud comunitarios y un progreso histórico para las familias trabajadoras en todos los ámbitos.
