There is a lot of talk about closing the border. It’s important to note that closing the border is just never going to happen due to commerce. Mexico just surpassed China as the main trading partner of the United States. But it’s also important to understand the mayhem that could follow if any president attempts to shut down the border – which would mean mass deportations of folks already here.
A President could mobilize Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) along with other federal agencies and law enforcement officers to physically remove undocumented people from the U.S. Those with criminal records, even minor ones, would be prime targets for roundups. Those without criminal records – if they are simply undocumented – would be next. The military could be used to set up camps close to the border to facilitate the removal process. What is happening in Texas, could happen on a mass scale across the country.
President Eisenhower did a variation of the above in the 1950’s. Families and migrant communities, especially here in the American southwest were devastated. Over a million migrants, some even Mexican Americans were included in the roundup. The harm was permanent.
In 2024 or 2025, the consequences of such actions would be even more catastrophic. Immigrants are now a larger share of the U.S. population and our industries. Indeed, without immigrants, California could not claim the title of the 5th largest economy in the world! So, the stakes are extremely high.
So, what can you do? First, make sure you read in between the political promises when they are made by presidential candidates. Take threats seriously. Educate yourself on the choices we have for November and if eligible, make sure you vote. Also make sure that people in your immediate circle votes as well, if indeed they are eligible to vote. Finally pass along the information that the upcoming election is like no other – and mobilize your community to get out the vote.

LOS PELIGROS DE CERRAR LA FRONTERA

Se habla mucho de cerrar la frontera. Es importante tener en cuenta que el cierre de la frontera nunca sucederá debido al comercio. México acaba de superar a China como principal socio comercial de Estados Unidos. Pero también es importante comprender el caos que podría seguir si algún presidente intenta cerrar la frontera, lo que significaría deportaciones masivas de personas que ya están aquí.
Un presidente podría movilizar al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) junto con otras agencias federales y agentes del orden para expulsar físicamente a las personas indocumentadas de los Estados Unidos. Aquellos con antecedentes penales, incluso menores, serían los objetivos principales de las redadas. Aquellos sin antecedentes penales –si simplemente son indocumentados– serían los siguientes. Se podría utilizar al ejército para establecer campamentos cerca de la frontera para facilitar el proceso de expulsión. Lo que está sucediendo en Texas podría suceder a gran escala en todo el país.
El presidente Eisenhower hizo una variación de lo anterior en los años cincuenta. Las familias y las comunidades de inmigrantes, especialmente aquí en el suroeste de Estados Unidos, quedaron devastadas. Más de un millón de inmigrantes, algunos incluso mexicano-estadounidenses, fueron incluidos en la redada. El daño fue permanente.
En 2024 o 2025, las consecuencias de tales acciones serían aún más catastróficas. Los inmigrantes constituyen ahora una proporción mayor de la población estadounidense y de nuestras industrias. De hecho, sin inmigrantes, California no podría reclamar el título de quinta economía más grande del mundo. Por lo tanto, hay mucho en juego.
¿Entonces que puedes hacer? Primero, asegúrese de leer entre las promesas políticas cuando las hacen los candidatos presidenciales. Tome las amenazas en serio. Infórmese sobre las opciones que tenemos para noviembre y, si es elegible, asegúrese de votar. Finalmente, transmita la información de que las próximas elecciones no se parecen a ninguna otra y movilice a su comunidad para conseguir que voten.
