The Power of Self-Love

Te reto a tratar algo diferente. Pregúntate, ¿conozco el amor? ¿Sé lo que es amarme a mí mismo? ¿me amo a mi miso?

¿Cómo puedes mostrar tu amor a otro si no puedes amarte a ti mismo?

The Power of Self-Love

VALENTINE’S DAY soon approaches, a time where many rush to find love. What are we really searching for, is it love, to be loved or be in love? As gay and bisexual men, we have an interesting outlook on love. Is it because we have suffered in the name of love? Is it because we lost the love of our family due to our sexual orientation? Or is it because we became HIV positive in the name of love? However you experienced this powerful emotion, it’s an experience many strive to feel.

On this Valentine’s Day, I challenge you to ask yourself, “do I love myself”? When you explore the concept of self-love, you may realize that loving yourself can be more fulfilling. The journey of loving yourself is not easy. It may be challenging if you are impacted by memories of child sexual abuse, family rejection, or living with HIV/AIDS. How do you reach self-love when you are overwhelmed with feelings of guilt and shame? If you have doubts because you question your behaviors, explore this. Do you not love yourself because you engage in high sexual risky behaviors? Do you not love yourself because alcohol or crystal meth is utilized to cope with your emotions? Challenge yourself to think about the possibilities of living life without the dangers and trills of risky sexual activity, or the high and grandness feeling crystal meth gives you.

Life is a beautiful but complicated journey; full of challenges and trials and tribulations. You must challenge your inner or past demons in order to overcome your struggles; the challenge is loving yourself first. It is much easier to love someone else or be in an unhealthy relationship because you are afraid of being alone. Once you embark on this journey, you may realize that the best love out there is the one you give yourself. The best pure and unconditional love is the one you embrace within yourself. If you can’t accept and love yourself, you may struggle loving and accepting someone else. You can’t feel or give something that you can’t give to yourself. If you are struggling with your sexuality, dealing with substance abuse, or overwhelmed with your emotions, than the first step to the journey of “self-love” is finding help. Allow the BIENESTAR  team under their new program Nuevo Amanecer/New Dawn to help you. Allow our professional team to help you find inner peace and the powerful feeling of loving yourself..For more information, please visit our website www.bienestar.org or contact any of our community centers.
