YOU DON’T ALWAYS KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CARRY

BY: Francisco Dueñas

Now that more of us have been vaccinated, perhaps you have decided that you want to start venturing a bit and get out of your quarantine routine. For some this process can be slow, cautiously starting some of your past routines little by little. Perhaps you start seeing family or friends that you haven’t seen for several months. For others, this moment is an explosion of activity.

Whatever way you handle this moment, it is important to keep in mind that we are all different and each of us will still have our preferences for how we want to interact with others. Before meeting some friends recently, someone asked the others if we were accepting hugs, or how we would like them to greet us. This question via text gave everyone the opportunity to state their preferences without prejudice and in advance, thus avoiding an awkward moment in person.

Another difference that you may find is how much pain and trauma each of us is still carrying, and how open about that we can be. The vaccine will eventually be liberating (if enough number of people have access to it and get it) but its arrival does not mean that each person has finished, or even started processing the trauma that this pandemic has left us.

Even as many countries around the world still face large outbreaks and knowing that new variants may still emerge, it is not then surprising that some people feel anxious about trying to return to their normal lives, pre-pandemic. I, for example, am not ready to leave my mask at home. It is a little protection that I can use when I need it to feel comfortable in public. We have to be understanding that we each have different needs when faced with this new transition.

When I met another friend recently, he only began realizing how much the pandemic had affected him when he shared with me what the last few months had been like for him. All these mixed feelings came out. It’s understandable. A pandemic is traumatic, and especially for our loved ones with risky jobs where every day they could have potentially been exposed to the virus. For those, returning to normal life will be difficult, even with the protection of the vaccine.

The joy of the vaccine is combined with so many other emotions. Maybe you finally let yourself feel the grief for so many that passed away. Or maybe you feel guilty about being a survivor when another loved one didn’t make it. Perhaps you faced abuse from others who did not know how to handle their stress. Or you simply start to lower your guard and you realize the level of effort you were spending maintaining so much vigilance and the stress that you were carrying, and you let yourself feel the fatigue of a year and a half of continuous struggle. Whatever your experience, be patient with others and with yourself, because we do not always know how much we are carrying until we have the chance to let it go.

NO SIEMPRE SABES CUÁNTO CARGAS
