A Cinematic Dream: Rediscovering “Kiss of the Spider Woman” Staring Jennifer Lopez

By Laura Moreno

“Kiss of the Spider Woman” is a dazzling 2025 musical drama directed by Bill Condon, written by Bill Condon (screenplay), Manuel Puig (novel) and Terrence McNally (stage musical), music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and the breakthrough performer Tonatiuh.

Praised for its exploration of complex themes such as sexuality and politics, this film is a vibrant adaptation of the Tony-award-winning 1993 Broadway musical that was inspired by the 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig.

The late Terrence McNally’s work on the Broadway show remains evident in the current film, seamlessly balancing the dramatic and musical scenes. It captures the essence of Puig’s novel while paying homage to the previous adaptations, creating a rich and layered narrative.

The original “Kiss of the Spider Woman” film, released in 1985, was groundbreaking in several ways. Directed by Héctor Babenco, it starred two first-rate straight actors, William Hurt and Raúl Julia, and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Picture, a first for an independent film. William Hurt won the Academy Award for Best Actor. This win was significant as it was the first time any actor had won an Oscar for portraying a gay character.

What sets the current film adaptation apart is its unique blend of genres and its stunning visual style. Bill Condon, known for his work on “Dreamgirls” and “Chicago,” brings a fresh perspective to the material. His one-take musical sequences, shot in New Jersey from March to June 2024, and the film’s creative use of technicolor musical sequences are reminiscent of classic Hollywood musicals like “Singin’ in the Rain,” creating a dreamlike atmosphere that perfectly complements the story. This is a key element of the film’s charm, transporting audiences to a world where reality and fantasy blur.

The lavish musicality at times dulls the tragic story’s sting, unlike the 1985 cinematic drama that mostly takes place behind bars.

Jennifer Lopez delivers an unforgettable performance as Ingrid Luna, the glamorous star of the fictional musical within the film. Her portrayal is a nod to classic Hollywood icons like Rita Hayworth and Maria Montez, both Hispanic as well. Lopez captures the essence of a bygone era with her presence and charisma. She brings glamor, emotional depth and vulnerability to the role, making Ingrid Luna a character audiences can connect with. Her dancing and singing are as impressive as her acting, showcasing her versatility as a performer. Lopez makes the role her own while honoring the legacies of Sonya Braga who had a comparatively modest role in the original film, and of two-time Tony Award winner Chita Rivera, the Spider Woman who mesmerized Broadway with her greatly expanded fiery musical role.

Set in an prison cell during Argentina’s Dirty War, the film features Molina (Tonatiuh), a gay window dresser, and Valentín (Diego Luna), a Communist revolutionary. They are the emotional heart of the film. Their performances are nuanced and layered, bringing complexity to their characters. Molina uses the stories of Ingrid Luna to momentarily escape from the harsh realities of prison life. Tonatiuh’s on-screen chemistry with Diego Luna is palpable, making the sincerity of their unlikely friendship one of the best things about the film.

This is a film that appeals to a wide audience, but ticket sales are being fueled mostly by Gen Z and Millennial movie goers. Fans of musicals in particular will appreciate the stunning choreography and the film’s exploration of complex themes such as identity, sexuality, and the power of storytelling.

In summary, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” demonstrates that storytelling can be a beacon of hope, guiding us through life’s darkest moments. With its amazing visuals, top-notch performances, and a story that resonates on many levels, this must-see cinematic experience is sure to inspire audiences for many years to come.
