Beatriz Adriana es toda una leyenda dentro de la música mexicana. Todos la hemos visto bailar sus ojos picaramente y llevarse una mano a la oreja mientras canta. Fue a principios de los 70’s que comenzó su carrera como cantante y también participó en más de una docena de películas. En fechas recientes se le ha visto presentarse en algunos clubs gays del Sur de California, y se presentará en algunos de ellos durante este mes de agosto. Platiqué con ella sobre estas futuras presentaciones, su nuevo disco que también saldrá al mercado en este mes, sobre su carrera y su vida en general.
Alberto: Sacaste un disco que se llama “Mi Historia” y contine 20 éxitos de tu carrera, ¿es este tu disco más reciente en el mercado?
Beatriz: Bueno, el que está en el mercado sí, pero viene otro que acabo de terminar, en este disco vienen éxitos muy bonitos, a mi estilo, con mariachi grupero, se puede decir que tipo “Intocable” porque se hizo en Monterrey, donde está la mera mata de grupos. Va el mariachi de base y la batería…va muy moderno, y vienen canciones como “Estos Celos”, “No te la vas a acabar”, ese va a estar en el mercado en agosto. Al disco creo que le van a poner “Estos Celos”, pero ahorita ya están tocando en La Ranchera “No te la vas a acabar”.
Alberto: Suena diferente esa combinación de mariachi con estilo grupero.
Beatriz: Sí, exacto, el mariachi hay que modernizarlo a esta época, para que no se quede tan tradicional. Es una mezcla muy bonita. Son éxitos ya comprobados, a mi estilo.
Alberto: ¿Estás incluyendo éxitos anteriores tuyos también?
Beatriz: No, mios no. Son éxitos de Sin Bandera, Mariana Seoane, Alejandro Fernández, Banda El Limón…de muchos artistas, casi todos baladistas.
Alberto: ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que sacaste tu último disco con temas inéditos?
Beatriz: Bueno, este…pues ahorita está uno, el de Amor en Secreto, asi que realmente a veces uno graba los CDs y ese fue una producción personal que hice para los fans, pero las disqueras sacan dos o tres por año, hacen como colección, como ese que me decías de 20 éxitos, le ponen otra foto pero son los mismos temas.
Alberto: De todo tu repertorio, ¿será “Hasta Cuando” el tema que más te representa, ó cuáles son los temas más fuertes en tu carrera?
Beatriz: Yo pienso que es la canción de El Cofrecito, porque esa canción cruzó fronteras en muchas partes de Europa, después de que ganó el festival ranchero de 1982 u 83. Se convirtió en un éxito en la radio y todos los mariachis lo tocaban. Tengo un amigo en Japón que me dijo que hasta allá se escuchaba. Yo creo que El Cofrecito fue la pauta.
Alberto: Has estado haciendo trabajo comunitario para Bienestar en campaña contra el VIH/SIDA. Háblanos de lo que has hecho como parte de esta campaña.
Beatriz: Lo que pasa es que yo quiero mucho a la comunidad gay y me han invitado a participar en desfiles, eventos…y pues con mucho cariño yo lo he hecho para ayudar en lo que se pueda. Que la comunidad vea que ahí estoy presente. Acabo de ir a Denver también con otra organización que ayuda a la gente que está malita, que está infectada, ahí doné un vestido para que se rife. Todo lo que se trate de poder aportar, cuando me han llamado y he podido, pues ahí estoy al pie del cañón.
Alberto: En próximas fechas vas a estar en diferentes clubs gays aquí en el Sur de California.
Beatriz: Sí, ¿cómo vez? Es que soy muy imitada, me encanta verme. Una vez salieron cuatro Beatriz Adrianas, yo fascinada viéndome. En el camerino, un cariño muy grande, mis dobles que me demuestran ese cariño, esa dedicación, ese tiempo, entonces para mi es pues mucha gratitud y me siento muy contenta de ser tan querida. Voy a estar en muchos lugares. Como saben que los quiero mucho, en cada lugar de la comunidad donde voy me poner mi corana, que soy la reina de ellos. Es un honor. En Tempo voy a estar el 12 de agosto y en Coco Bongo el 15 de agosto.
Alberto: ¿Usualmente cuántos temas cantas o por cuánto tiempo en este tipo de shows?
Beatriz: Yo llevo mis músicos, les hago más de una hora y media de show, o lo que me aguanten. Porque hay muchos éxitos que ellos quieren y yo con mucho cariño se los canto. Cuando llevas a tus músicos pues tienes una gama de canciones que…no hay límite. En el Tempo el show se va a dividir en dos, porque está la parte de arriba y la parte de abajo, no va a ser tan largo en cada sitio pero no es algo relámpago, voy a cantar mis éxitos.
Alberto: ¿Qué opinas de permitir o impedir que puedan casarse las parejas gays en California?
Beatriz: Pues yo pienso que si están invirtiendo los dos una vida y aparte cosas económicas debe de haber papeles que los protejan, porque al final de todo están unidos como pareja y en cosas materiales y después si no tienen esos documentos, pues qué pasa? Por cuestiones legales. Creo que se tienen que poder también respaldar con documentos.
Alberto: Te sigue mucho la comunidad gay, ¿a qué crees que se deba?
Beatriz: Fíjate que yo no sé, soy muy querida y yo los quiero mucho. Siento que como amiga son las mejores amigas y te defienden como los mejores amigos. Me han querido desde que empecé mi carrera, desde que empecé a mover los ojos. Es recíproco.
Alberto: Hay cantantes que prefieren no visitar lugares identificados como gays, ¿por qué crees que estos artistas prefieren no hacerlo?
Beatriz: Yo no entiendo. Mira, si Dios te manda al mundo y te quiere como te mandó quién soy yo para no quererte? Entonces, hay gente que tiene prejuicios.
Alberto: Estás viviendo aquí en el Sur de California, ¿están aquí tus hijos, tus nietos?
Beatriz: Mira, hijos yo tenía a Leonardo, que el próximo domingo cumple ya 9 años que se fue al cielo, y a mi hija Beatriz, ahorita nadamás a mi hija Beatriz y mi pequeñito Leonardito que nació el mismo día que nació mi hijo, de parto natural. Yo que creo tanto en Dios creo que en lugar de una coincidencia es una Diocidencia. Dios me lo mandó para que el día que se festeja el cumleaños de mi hijo, voy y lloro un ratito al panteón (en Corona), pero luego me vengo a la piñata con mi nietecito. Allí en el panteón donde está mi hijo está también mi espacio, el día que yo me vaya ahí voy a estar. Soy una señora normal, estoy muy entregada a Dios, he tenido la vendición de estar rodeada de gente muy hermosa como…por ejemplo, la enfermera que trajo al mundo a mi hijo es una madre superiora de un convento, y es como mi segunda mamá porque yo perdí a mi mamá a los 12 años. He tenido muchos amigos sacerdotes que me han visto llorar y me dicen “no llores, no está tu hijo pero estamos nosotros, véngase, no se me caiga”. Me han llenado ese espacio tan maravilloso en mi vida. Soy una persona normal, cuando me levanto hago mis ejercicios, mi vocalización.
Alberto: ¿Se puede decir entonces que tus planes son residir por siempre en el Sur de California?
Beatriz: Sí, pues ya me vine para acá. Realmente México está muy difícil, desde que secuestraron a mi hijo allá había planes de secuestro de mi hija también, entonces tuve que venirme para acá, porque pues ella es hija del greñudo sangrón del Buki, entonces imagínate…Dios guarde la hora que…más peligro. Ya mi hijo pagó ese precio. Y aquí estamos desde hace nueve años, yo como salí de mi casa, con lo que traía puesto y un rosario pidiéndole a la santísima virgen que me ayudara, llego a Tijuana, me entregan su cadáver y me vengo a Estados Unidos sin nada. Cuando menos aquí tienes la tranquilidad de que vas al cine, no andas viendo quién te sigue, o sea…y cualquier cosa la policía no está corrompida con ese tipo de maldades. Pero bueno, aquí estamos pidiéndole a Dios que nos ayude. Mira, la vida es un suspiro, ahorita estamos, mañana no, mientras pase el tiempo pues yo estoy echándole muchas ganas a mi carrera, cantándole desde aquí abajo a mi hijo y diciéndole “espéreme tantito, que ahorita anda su mamá muy agusto en los escenarios”, ya que Dios quiera lo alcanzo.
Alberto: Háblanos de planes que tienes para promover tu disco que viene apenas para este mes.
Beatriz: Este fin de semana que entra, con el favor de Dios, voy a estar en El Paso, TX. Después me voy a reunir con la compañía disquera porque vamos a hacer una gira de presentaciones en toda el área de la Florida, para…ya que esté el disco en todas las tiendas entonces nos vamos a lanzar duro y tupido con el favor de Dios a las rádios y todo. Estoy esperando esa junta con la disquera para ponerme a chambear a todo dar, que es lo que me gusta, otra cosa no me gusta hacer más que cantar y andar de mitotera.
Alberto: Te felicitamos por toda tu carrera y esperamos verte en uno de estos clubs que nos quedan cerca.
Beatriz: Muchísimas gracias. Claro que sí, ahí nos vemos. De antemano muchas gracias por el cariño, yo también los quiero mucho y pues qué les puedo decir, que Dios los vendiga, sé que muchos han rezado por mi y gracias a Dios y a sus oraciones pues aquí está todavía Beatriz Adriana echándole muchas ganas a la carrera y a la vida, y cantándoles con todo el corazón.

Beatriz Adriana is a legend in Mexican music. All have seen her eyes dancing in sexy ways, singing while covering one ear. It was during the 70’s when her career began and since, she has performed in more than a dozen movies. Recently, she has been performing at different Gay Clubs in Southern California and will be present at some this month. I talked with her about these future engagements, her upcoming CD and her career in general.
Alberto: Your CD “Mi Historia” with 20 of your greatest hits, ¿Is this your most recent work on the market?
Beatriz: Well, on the market, yes. But, there’s an upcoming CD that I just finished. This CD includes songs that were hits with other artists, but now done in my own style. It’s a new sound mixing different instruments with the traditional mariachi. The mariachi is the base, but it also has percussion instruments…it’s something modern and features hits like “Estos Celos” and “No te la vas a acabar” and it will be on the market in August. It might be titled “Estos Celos,” but right now you can hear one of the songs “No te la vas a acabar” on La Ranchera (AM 930).
Sounds like a different combination of traditional mariachi instruments with those of a “grupero” sound. Yes, exactly, there’s like a need to modernize the mariachi sound, so it doesn’t sound so traditional. It’s a nice mix. The songs are proven hits, but now with my style.
Are you including some of your previous hits? No, not this time. The songs are from singers such as Sin Bandera, Mariana Seoane, Alejandro Fernández, Banda El Limón…many artists, almost all of the songs are ballads.
How long has it been since you released a new album with new material? Well, there was one that was released not long ago called “Amor en Secreto.” Sometimes we record albums but not at the commercial level, it was a personal production for my fans. My record company releases two or three albums every year. They like collections of songs, like that one with the 20 hits you mentioned before. They put a new picture over it but basically they included the same songs.
From your repertory, one of the strongest hits is “Hasta Cuando.” Which songs do you consider to be the base of your career? I think it’s the song El Cofrecito, because that song crossed frontiers in many places across Europe just after wining a ranchero festival in 1982 or 1983. It became a hit on the radio and every mariachi group played it. I have a friend in Japan and he told me that he heard the song played there as well.
You have been doing community work for Bienestar in their campaign against HIV/AIDS. What did you exactly do as part of that campaign? First, I love the gay community and they invite me to participate in parades and all kind of events…and it’s with much gratitude that I do whatever possible to help. So the community can see that I’m there. I have been in Denver, with a similar organization helping people with HIV, and I donated a dress so they could have a raffle with it. When it’s about giving a helping hand, if I can, I do it.
You will be performing at different gay clubs in Los Angeles? Yes, how do you like that? I’m very much impersonated in gay clubs and I love it. Once I saw a drag show with four Beatriz Adrianas. I was fascinated watching. Backstage they showed me only love and for me it was great to know and make me feel loved and happy. I feel an immense gratitude. I’ll be performing at different gay clubs. Usually, when I perform at a gay club they announce me as the Queen of the Gay Community, that’s a privilege. I’ll be at Tempo Nightblub on August 12th and at Coco Bongo on August 15th.
Usually, how many songs you sing or for how long do you stay at a show such as this? I perform with my musiciansm and the show is like an hour and a half long. It doesn’t matter how long it takes. There are many hits that they want to hear and I sing them. When you take your musicians with you and there’s a huge number of songs in your repertory…there’s no limit. At Tempo, the show will be divided in two parts, because they have stages downstairs and on the second floor. In any case, the shows will not be a ghost presentation, I’ll sing my hits.
What’s your opinion on Gay Marriage in California? I think that if they are investing in a life together and they have also invested in economic matters, they should have legal rights to protect them. In the end, they are tied together as partners and with some material issues, and if they don’t have those documents, what happens? For legal purposes, I think that they should have the same rights.
The gay community has always followed your career, why do you think this has happen? I don’t know, I’m loved and I love them very much. As friends, they are the best and they stand by you as best friends do. And this has happened since the beginning of my career, since my eyes started dancing.
There are singers who prefer not to perform in gay venues, why do you think they chose not to? I don’t understand. Look, if God sent you to this world and He loves you like He sent you, who am I to not love you? They are just people with prejudices.
You are living here in Southern California, are your sons and grandsons also living here? Look, I had Leonardo. Next Sunday it will be nine years since he went to heaven and my daughter Beatriz is now my only daughter Beatriz. And my little Leonardito was born the same day as my son. I believe so much in God, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence, it has to be a “God-Incidence”. God sent him so that on the day of my son’s birthday, I can go cry a little bit at the cemetery (in Corona), but then I join my little grandson with his piñata. In the cemetery where my son is buried, I have my space. The day I have to leave that’s where I will be. I’m an ordinary woman, I believe in God and I have been lucky and have very nice people around me…the nurse who helped my daughter when Leonardito was born is a Mother Superior of a convent, and she is like my second mother because I lost my mom when I was 12 years old. I have had many priests as friends, they have watched me cry and they tell me “don’t cry, your son is not here but we are here, come with us, don’t be sad”. They fill that marvelous space in my life. I’m a normal person, when I wake up I exercise and practice my vocals.…
Do you want to live in Southern California your whole life? Yes, I came to stay here. In Mexico it was very hard. Since the day my son was kidnapped and we knew there were also plans to kidnap my daughter, we had to come here. Because my daughter’s father is the tangled and unpleasant Buki, can you imagine…it was dangerous to stay there. My son has already paid the price. And here we are since then, it’s been nine years. I came the way I left home, just with what I had on and a rosary asking the Most Holy Virgin to help me. I arrived in Tijuana, I took my son’s body and came to the United States with nothing else. At least, here you can go out and don’t have to worry that someone might be following you…the police here are corrupt. Well, here we are, asking God for His protection. Life is too short, while now we are here but tomorrow we may not be, but in the meanwhile, I’m moving forward with my career, singing from below here to my son..telling him “wait a little bit, right now your mom is happy performing,” when God decides, I’ll join you.
Tell us about your plans to promote your up coming album. This coming weekend I will be performing in El Paso, TX. Then I will have a meeting with my record company because we are going to do a series of presentations in Florida, and when the album gets to all the music stores, we’ll do intense work, working with the radio and all. I love to sing and to work hard.
