La Coalición TransLatin@ presentó GARRAS el sábado 19 de noviembre ante una multitud en el Pacific Design Center en West Hollywood. Garras es un evento anual que recauda fondos para los programas y servicios de la organización a la vez que da visibilidad a la Comunidad Trans y Género No Conformista en un foro de movilización comunitaria a través de este evento Trans Cultural.
Los principales patrocinadores de este año incluyeron a Gilead, Bank of America, Amazon, Wallmart, Kaiser Permanente, la ciudad de West Hollywood, Glamazon Los Ángeles, Keck Medicine of USC, Loud y SoCalGas Company.
Bamby Salcedo, Presidenta y CEO de la Coalición TransLatina- realizó un acto de apertura y también agradeció a los asistentes por apoyar a la Coalición. Maria Roman, Vicepresidenta y Directora de Operaciones fue la emcee del desfile de moda que incluyó trece actuaciones en pista y un diverso grupo de modelos representativos de Latinx y comunidades multiculturales e inclusivos de todos los géneros, conformes y no conformes y todos los grupos de edad, jóvenes y mayores. Fue un espectáculo para todos.
La Coalición TransLatin@ es una organización nacional compuesta por personas translatin@s de diferentes partes de los Estados Unidos que se han organizado para abordar las necesidades y problemas específicos de las translatin@s que residen en los Estados Unidos. La organización fue fundada en 2009 como una respuesta de base a las necesidades de las inmigrantes TransLatin@s en los Estados Unidos. Desde sus inicios, los miembros de la coalición han ofrecido su tiempo como voluntarios para garantizar que se escuchen las voces TransLatin@s.
GARRAS significa Activismo Innovador Reorientando y Reformando Todos los Sistemas. La idea de GARRAS fue desarrollada por miembros de TransLatin@ Coalition, que colectivamente decidieron que las modelos que participen en el evento sean miembros de las comunidades trans, de género no conforme y aliadas, y tendrán la oportunidad de exhibirse como modelos de alta costura. De igual importancia, el evento fue una oportunidad para mostrar a los diseñadores y estilistas su arte y talento. El evento se organiza como parte del Mes de la Concientización Trans y como complemento del Día de la Memoria Transgénero y para reconocer, valorar y reconocer a los miembros de la comunidad trans y de género no conforme que están viviendo su verdadera identidad.
Los diseñadores destacados este año fueron Yaisel, Mars Wright, el élder Patricio Arita Pérez, Gaby García, Cecilia Martínez, Jessie Alvarado, Claudia Abundis, José Huizar, Rotert Ortiz, Eruvey Tapia, Lluvia Guzmán, Fernando Vázquez y Lidia Talavera. The TransLatin@ Coalition hosted GARRAS on Saturday, November 19 to a packed crowd at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Garras is an annual event which raises funds for the organization’s programs and services while providing visibility to the Trans and Gender Nonconforming Community in a forum of community mobilization through this Trans Cultural event.
This year’s major sponsors included Gilead, Bank of America, Amazon, Wallmart, Kaiser Permanente, the City of West Hollywood, Glamazon Los Angeles, Keck Medicine of USC, Loud and the SoCalGas Company.
Bamby Salcedo, President and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition performed an opening act and also thanked the attendees for supporting the Coalition. Maria Roman, Vice President and Chief Operations Officer was the emcee of the fashion show which included thirteen runway performances and a diverse group of models representative of Latinx and multicultural communities and inclusive of all genders, conforming and non-comforming and all age groups, young and older. It was a show for everyone.
The TransLatin@ Coalition is a national organization composed of TransLatin@ individuals from different parts of the United States who have organized to address the specific needs and issues of TransLatin@s who reside in the United States. The organization was founded in 2009 as a grass roots response to the needs of TransLatin@ immigrants in the United States. Since their inception, members of the coalition have been volunteering their time to ensure that the voices of TransLatin@s are heard.
GARRAS stands for Groundbreaking Activism Redirecting and Reforming All Systems. The idea of GARRAS was developed by members of the TransLatin@ Coalition which collectively decided that the models who participate in the event are to be members of the Trans, Gender Nonconforming and Allied Communities and will have the opportunity to be showcased as high fashion models. Equally important, the event was an opportunity to showcase designers and stylists to be able to showcase their art and talent. The event is organized as part of the Trans Awareness Month and as a complement to Transgender Day of Remembrance and to acknowledge, value and recognize members of the Trans and Gender nonconforming community who are living their true selves.
