Despite advances in HIV prevention, the Centers for Decease Control (CDC) in Washington DC reports that the HIV epidemic continues and is more severe among Hispanic/Latino gay and bisexual men in the United States. Unfortunately, HIV prevention and treatment is not reaching Latinos in California as well as it should be.
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prevention strategy via medication available that provides substantial benefits aimed at reducing HIV infection.
When it comes to Latino men who have sex with men (MSM), the risk of acquiring HIV is higher due to the lack of information and/or misinformation about PrEP, the medication which is now available to prevent HIV.
AT THE FOREFRONT OF COMBATING HIV
In a recent meeting with Raúl Quintero, PrEP Navigator at the WESLEY Health Center (JWHC) located on the Los Angeles City College campus, it became evident by the number of students seeking medical care, that JWHC plays a critical role in their mission to provide primary medical care for the student body and members of the community at-large.
It was of great interest to learn that JWHC was at the forefront of providing access to information on HIV prevention strategies by having Raúl Quintero an expert in their HIV & Biomedical Department to serve as a critical conduit to inform, counsel and support anyone seeking PrEP and related care.
Although the college has not reached full enrollment capacity due to the COVID restrictions, Mr. Quintero and Anne Eagan, the RN on sight, indicated that over the past few weeks they have seen approximately 40 students seeking PrEP treatment. “We are seeing the numbers of students increasing as the semester progresses, and we are glad to know that students at-risk are getting the information that is critical to their well-being”, stated Mr. Quintero.
JWHC’s COMMITMENT
Over the years JWCH has been at the forefront of informing and dispensing medications that help communities affected by the HIV epidemic by helping people avoid getting HIV in the first place. They have over 20 clinics throughout Los Angeles and the Antelope Valley in an attempt to educate, inform and treat members of the Latino community at-large. EL VIH SE PUEDE PREVENIR CON MEDICAMENTOS PREP

A pesar de los avances en la prevención del VIH, los Centros para el Control de Muertes (CDC) en Washington DC informan que la epidemia del VIH continúa y es más grave entre los hombres homosexuales y bisexuales hispanos/latinos en los Estados Unidos. Desafortunadamente, la prevención y el tratamiento del VIH no están llegando a los latinos en California.
La PrEP (profilaxis previa a la exposición) es una estrategia de prevención de medicamentos disponibles que proporciona beneficios sustanciales destinados a reducir la infección por el VIH.
Cuando se trata de hombres latinos que tienen sexo con hombres (HSH), el riesgo de contraer el VIH es mayor debido a la falta de información y/o desinformación sobre la PrEP, el nuevo medicamento que ahora está disponible para prevenir el VIH.
A LA VANGUARDIA EN LA LUCHA CONTRA EL VIH
En una reunión reciente con Raul Quintero, PrEP Navigator en el WESLEY Health Center (JWHC) ubicado en el campus de Los Angeles City College, se hizo evidente por la cantidad de estudiantes que buscan atención médica, que JWHC juega un papel fundamental en su misión de brindar atención médica primaria para el alumnado y los miembros de la comunidad en general.
Fue de gran interés saber que JWHC estuvo a la vanguardia en brindar acceso a información sobre estrategias de prevención del VIH al tener a Raúl Quintero, un experto en su Departamento Biomédico y de VIH, para servir como un conducto crítico para informar, asesorar y apoyar a cualquier persona que busque PrEP y cuidado relacionado.
Aunque la universidad no ha alcanzado la capacidad total de inscripción debido a las restricciones de COVID, el Sr. Quintero y Anne Eagan, la enfermera registrada en el lugar, indicaron que durante las últimas semanas han visto a aproximadamente 40 estudiantes que buscan tratamiento de PrEP. “Estamos viendo que el número de estudiantes aumenta a medida que avanza el semestre, y nos complace saber que los estudiantes en riesgo están recibiendo la información que es fundamental para su bienestar”, afirmó el Sr. Quintero.
COMPROMISO DE JWHC
A lo largo de los años, JWHC ha estado a la vanguardia en la información y distribución de medicamentos que ayudan a las comunidades afectadas por la epidemia del VIH al ayudar a evitar que las personas contraigan el VIH en primer lugar.
