What Our Family Can Give To Us

The Latino community is known for its richness in tradition and its emphasis on family. Unlike other cultures which emphasize strongly on independence, this culture encourages reliance and trust on one another; carries a genuine worry about the wellbeing of the family members and focuses on the unity and stability it brings.

With the migration to the United States, many Latino families are torn apart for years, sometimes even decades. This immigration process can bring along increased stress due to the adjustment to a new culture, being unable to find steady work, falling ill and experiencing discrimination.  All factors that can cause depression, anxiety and other mental health issues that can be harmful to the person. For some, gaining support from their family unit when facing these challenges can be not only beneficial but also crucial for a good quality of life.

What is a family?
The term family relates to the special relationship and loyalty that is developed between two or more people. A family can be many things and can be represented in multiple relationships. The traditional family is viewed as the relationship between a partner, siblings, children, parents, and extended members of the family. But some persons have strong bonds with friends, neighbors, or coworkers and view these relationships as important family units. Others develop these close bonds with members of a support or social group. Some individuals have multiple family units, while others may only need one. Whichever relationship works best for you, it is important to recognize its value.

Having this strong support system can help you work through those difficult challenges in life. During times of stress, conflict or illness, the family is often sought out for support and guidance. They can remind you of your perseverance, provide reassurance, and give a safe and trusting environment to deal with those difficult times.

So ask yourself who is your family? More than likely you will be able to identify those important people in your life with which you have shared happy, challenging and rewarding experiences. Remember, you do not need to be related by blood to consider someone a family member. It is that person or persons that really stand out in your mind and that you reach out to during those good and bad moments.

The value of having a good support system can bring about so many benefits but there may be moments that the support alone is not enough. Should you encounter this, counseling from a mental health clinician or psychologist may be a better option for you. It may help you gain a better perspective on your problems, explore solutions, and work through those difficult moments that life sometimes throws as us.
