Mexican Actor Gael Garcia "Rudo y Cursi"

(English Version Below)

Alberto: Has actuado, dirigido y producido.

Leyendo mucho, me gusta hacer ejercicio.

Soon you will have the opportunity to see in theatres the movie “Rudo y Cursi” (Tough and Corny), the stars of the movie are the well-known Mexican actors Gael Garcia and Diego Luna, from the director Carlos Cuaron, whose brother is, the well-known director, Alfonzo Cuaron. By the way Alfonzo produces this movie along with Alejandro Glez. Iñarritu and Guillermo del Toro. As you can see, this movie is well supported.
In the movie, Cursi (Gael) and Rudo (Diego) are brothers working in a banana plantation, both play soccer as a pastime, Cursi dreams of being a famous singer, while Rudo wants to be a professional soccer player. Soon their lives make an unexpected spin where their dreams in part come true, however they soon find themselves not knowing how to control their new lives and their fall is as tough and corny as the role these protagonists portray.

I had the opportunity to interview Gael Garcia about this movie and his career in general in at hotel in West Hollywood. Is he as handsome in person you may ask, Yes he is but unfortunately he is not gay. Approximately two months ago Gael and his girlfriend Dolores Fonz had a son who they named Lázaro, they live in Mexico City and we wish them a successful and happy life. Here is the conversation that I had with Gael.

Alberto: Diego’s role (tough) as well as yours (corny) are tough and corny. How do you prepare for this role as Corny?
Gael: The roles have that dichotomy, they are tough and corny, the role that I play, is baptized more so as corny, but in reality he is more rude.
For every role there is some kind of preparation for it, here we had to sing, play soccer, play a role in a realistic tone, but always there is a particular preparation.
Particular, can you explain? That we took a solid month, working every day, rehearsing, practicing and playing a lot of soccer.

Alberto: You had to play the accordion and appear to be a professional soccer player. Is a month sufficient time to accomplish all of this?
Gael: well, I hope so. It ended up being enough time, because soccer scenes did not appear in the movie, and well obviously I do not play the accordion, and I’m not saying that I’m a singer either. In real life I sing but to myself only, but I prepared for the role only for the necessary things to bring this character to life

Alberto: As a fact, perhaps singing might be a corny part of the film?
Gael: Of course, that is why he is called corny, because he sings after each goal.

Alberto: You have spent time with Diego Luna, with the director (Carlos Cuarón), with the producers Alejandro Glez. Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro). You could say that everything stayed in the family.
Gael: Yes, and there is a whole lot of people that I worked with in Mexico and where part of the movie, in different projects of the movie. I think that this was the first film where I got there and I knew everyone.

Alberto: Does this make things easy?
Gael: Yes, it does not complicate them; on the contrary it makes it easy day by day.

Alberto: For every role that you have played, does it take you more or less the same amount of time to prepare for them? And are they all as complicated or are there some roles as the one from the Motorcycle Diaries (playing Che Guevara) or Bad Education (bringing to like a role as a transvestite)?
Gael: Yes, each role has its own particularity, and some may take you more time to prepare for. There are some roles that for the simple fact that to prepare them or come up with, has taken me plenty of time to portray. For example in the Motorcycle Diaries, I was living in Argentina five months prior to filming the movie, a decision that we can say it is not necessary but I loved the idea of it, and Bad Education as well, different movies have that ‘necessity’ and I have tried to prepare for it in that way, but always each movie has its own voyage.

Alberto: You have acted, directed and produced, is there something else within the movie industry that you would like to try out?
Gael: Mmm, what could it be, maybe a photographer, art director, but maybe this things I cannot do because I have not studied for that, it would take a long time and not sure about it. I would not recommend people to hire me for this. I would love to continue doing what I like to do, basically that is all I want to continue doing. I would like to tell stories that I like, be it as an actor, director or producer. Obviously there are movies that I would like so see being done but evidently they do not have the role for me, in this case I would like to produce it or if is a movie that I feel is necessary and have a particular point of view, I would direct it.

Alberto: You also created a documentary festival ‘Ambulante’ (ambulant) to show trough different cities in Mexico, How did that Idea come about?
Gael: By having a public interest on these documentaries and wanted to see them in several venues such as commercial places, Plazas, Galleries, jails…who knows. Like slowly liberating some of these movies that primarily are seen in certain specialized venues and are not necessary in big cities. We had that restlessness to be able to share those stories and to create a captive audience for those documentaries, to ease and to undertake a bit more, and so that the documentaries would have more life, more meat and bone and I think we are accomplishing it. It is the fourth year of the Ambulante festival in Mexico, at this moment we are in the city of Queretaro, and soon in Monterrey.

Alberto: How do you pick which movies should be shown at the festival?
Gael: There is an organization for the festival that takes care of that, Elena Fortes is the director of the festival and she works with a group of programmers.

Alberto: Do you consider the ‘new Mexican cinema’ as something solid, which is taking off, where are you on what is considered the new Mexican Cinema?
Gael: That is totally new, there is no doubt, and there is also no doubt that is Mexican, but it does not exist as a movement, it exists as an independent voice, there are independent forces that make it exist as a group. But luckily we are not going with an eagerness to try to create a manifesto nor a group or anything like that, we don’t want to put a name, and that is a fortune because that way everything eases up. A great error is being liberated in wanting to structure it and call it a movement; it is something that is free, something that is unexpected, and something that does not for permission. Carlos Regads made a movie who nobody expect, he was an attorney who took a camera and started to film, and he is one of the most important directors in the world, this being said as an example, this in structure would not work.

Alberto: You were trying to perfect your French and Italian, How is that going?
Gael: No, truth being that is going real bad, because I have not studied, I don’t dedicate enough time to it. Now I’m trying to learn how to play the guitar, been doing it a year and I love it.

Alberto: You did not continue learning to play the accordion? (Corny plays the accordion in the movie “Tough and Corny)”.
Gael: No, the reason being that the accordion was too much of a hassle to travel with it. I would love to keep playing it but being that I travel a lot, it’s an instrument that is too heavy to carry around, a guitar on the other hand its easy to carry and play, like I have done on this trip.

Alberto: What do you think has more weight for you as an actor, the Academia Edrón of Mexico or the Central School of Speech and Drama of London, where you also studied?
Gael: Well, it’s a combination of both, and the combination of being a Mexican in London; I think that that combination was a good one. It worked for me, I don’t say that is a formula, and I don’t think it is, but it worked for me. Imagine if I would say it’s not.

Alberto: That is the way you accomplished your formula; it had to have been something good.
Gael: Well, I hope so. I want to continue studying. I want to challenge myself and do many things.

Alberto: Could it be possible to be culturally Catholic and Agnostic spiritually?
Gael: I think so, Culturally to my regret, in the sense of… at Christmas I spend it with family, love to make “rosca de reyes”, tamales for Dia de la Candelaria, day of the dead… love a great bash, if I’m a part of them, I don’t go to church at all, politically I may consider myself Atheist, but for the simple fact of not wanting to belong. Spiritually I would consider myself Agnostic, being that the path is more towards inside and all religions come into play. Spirituality comes into play. One goes to all these festivities and at the end you realize that their origin comes from Catholicism or this syncretism between Catholics and African and indigenous religions, the syncretism is nowadays the modern side of religion in Mexico and if by celebrating this I’m culturally catholic but yes… its not a burden.

Alberto: What are your hobbies, and what you do when you are not acting or preparing yourself for a role?
Gael: It all depends, from going to the movies to just watching people. Reading and working out. A particular sport, play the guitar, go to concerts and to the theatre.

Alberto: Do you have enough time to maintain in contact with your friends?
Gael: Yes of course, and with the family as well.

Alberto: Presently where do you live?
Gael: I would say in Mexico, but I live where I work.

Alberto: Does Dolores (girlfriend) and your son Lazaro live with you as well?
Gael: Yes, we all live together.

Alberto: There is also another movie in production that you are acting in
Gael: Yes, it’s about to debut here in the States called “The Limits of Control”.

We hope you go and see Tough and Corny (Rudo y Cursi) hope you like it. For comments about this interview, write to me at: aorozco@adelantemgazine.com
