Alberto: Por fin te declaras de Corazón Ranchero.
Shaila: Disco nuevo, disco ranchero, mi Corazón Ranchero. Es algo maravilloso porque ya llegó por fin. Yo creo que me lo ha ido exigiendo el público. Siempre he cantado con mariachi, gracias a ese legado maravilloso que me dejó mi mami, y pues ahora poder disfrutar de este disco completamente ranchero y poder cantaros las canciones y poder estar de gira con Vicente Fernández y poder compartir parte de estas canciones de este nuevo disco.
Háblanos por favor sobre los temas de Corazón Ranchero y tu primer sencillo. El single aquí en los Estados Unidos va a ser Dos Coronas a mi Madre. Es algo muy significativo porque con esa aprovecho quieras que no el poder recordar a mi mami, que todo mundo la tiene tan presente todos los días en sus corazones y en sus pensamientos. En México va a ser Y Llegaste Tú, que es una canción que quién no ha bailado con El Recodo, y cantado esa canción, es una de las primeras canciones que yo conocí de la Banda El Recodo, y pues me hacía mucha ilusión poder cantarla. Tengo muchos amigos de Sinaloa, la banda es algo que me encanta, que disfruto mucho. Hay temas de todo un poco, quería hacer canciones para todos. Todas las canciones son originales rancheras, algunas las hemos versionado al ranchero, como Tatuajes, como Tu Cárcel, canciones que quién no las ha coreado. Algunas canciones ya las conocía desde pequeñita, porque me las ha ido inculcando mi mami, mi familia mexicana también. Y otras las he ido conociendo en estos últimos cinco años que llevo en el Distrito Federal, y es algo muy lindo, quería mezclar un poquito de todas las canciones. Quería incluir Las Llaves de mi Alma para hacerle un regalito a mi padrino Vicente Fernández, que me ha dado la oportunidad de presentarme aquí en los Estados Unidos. Es algo muy lindo cantar por ejemplo Cenizas, En Mi Viejo San Juan, porque yo soy fan de Javier Solis. Son esas clásicas que me apetecían muchísimo cantarlas. Está Tu Infame Engaño…
¿Por Qué son diferentes los temas que se manejan como primer sencillo aquí en los Estados Unidos y en México? Pues yo creo que son territorios diferentes y porque he tenido la oportunidad de cantar estas canciones ya con Don Vicente Fernández y pues quieras que no yo me fijo mucho en lo que la gente quiere escuchar, y para eso estamos aquí, y pues son territorios muy diferentes, cada uno quiere escuchar una cosa, y también pues junto con la compañía, son muchas decisiones. Pero es muy divertido porque así yo puedo cantar diferentes canciones en diferentes territorios. Para finales del año sale el disco en España, veamos qué van a querer. Lo principal es que le guste a la gente.
Aparte de tu nuevo disco, se puede decir que tu matrimonio es aun algo nuevo. Claro, tenemos un añito, practicamente estamos como lunamieleros.
¿Vendrá bebé pronto? Todavía no. Yo creo que me voy a esperar un par de añitos. Sí me apetece pero creo que tengo que trabajar mucho todavía, ahorrar, tener mis ahorritos, terminar mi casa porque apenas acabamos de estrenar la casa. Disfrutar un poco del matrimonio, cuando Dios quiera van a venir los niños. La niña primero.
¿Asi que estás radicando en el Distrito Federal? Sí, tengo cinco años ya. Maravilloso, estoy feliz de estar en el Distrito Federal, todo mundo me dice ¿pero seguro? Totalmente segura, me encanta.
Escuché tu disco, me pareció muy bueno, pero lo sentí triste, ¿era ese el concepto? Pues yo creo que la canción ranchera es muy sentimental, muy desgarradora, y yo creo que va de la mano, pero se complementa un poco con la alegría y la felicidad que siento, y todo ese sentimiento va combinado y se queda ahí. Y Llegaste Tú es bien alegre, no todo es tristeza en este mundo.
Tu primer álbum fue Recordando, y ahora estás con Corazón Ranchero, sin embargo en el medio hay otro disco del cual no escuchamos aquí en los Estados Unidos, háblanos de Tanto Amor. Siempre he tenido esa dualidad de poder cantar música pop y música ranchera, por mi mamá. Y siempre tengo la influencia de las tres culturas que más me han marcado, que son la americana, la española y la mexicana. Siempre intento combinar esas tres en mis shows. Eso le da un flow maravilloso al show, sobre gustos hay colores, la gente siempre quiere escuchar un poquito de todo. Tanto Amor es un disco pop, con canciones muy actuales, creo que mucha gente se va a sentir identificada con los temas de Tanto Amor.
¿Será que el disco se dio al tiempo del cambio de compañía disquera y por eso no se promovió adecuadamente? El cambio se dio antes. Pues, las disqueras se están undiendo las pobres, y bueno, qué le vamos a hacer, hay que rescatarlas un poco.
Has estado acompañando a Vicente Fernández y Cristian Castro abriendo sus conciertos, ¿Cómo ves la reacción del público al entrar a cantar al escenario? Es maravilloso, la verdad que me faltan palabras para describir ese amor y cariño, que se entregan 100% conmigo, y ese amor y cariño que sentían por mi mami, que sienten por mi mami, me lo transmiten a mi después de que me ven cantar en directo, porque no es lo mismo oir un disco y ver a una artista en directo, cambia muchísimo. Espero que puedas verme en vivo, que puedas sentir eso que siento yo cuando me subo al escenario, porque se te pone la piel chinita de ver tantas reacciones, ver sonrisas, lágrimas, ver gente asombrada…son muchas reacciones y me llevo el mejor recuerdo siempre.
Hay algunas cosas quizás difíciles de abordar. ¿Qué opinión tienes en la actualidad de Juan Gabriel? ¿Qué opinión voy a tener? Es un artista maravilloso, un compositor grandísimo. Creo que ha marcado un antes y un después en México, él sigue siendo uno de los grandes. Ha marcado un cambio en la música ranchera. Él le dio una oportunidad maravillosa a mi madre, al igual que mi madre se la dio a él, y yo creo que han sido una mancuerna padrísima siempre, se aportaron grandes cosas a sus carreras artísticas y yo feliz porque puedo interpretar tantísimas canciones de Alberto, lo admiro muchísimo como artista y como compositor y esperamos tenerlo muchos años.
Tienes algún comentario sobre esos chismes que seguramente has escuchado, pero que todos quisieramos que no fueran cierto? Pues no he oido nada corazón, siempre me entero por vosotros, ¿qué chismes? No he oido nada mi vida, no sé de qué chismes me hablas.
Mejor así. Háblanos de tus planes de promoción con Corazón Ranchero por favor. Pues, mi vida, aquí estoy feliz en Los Angeles. Voy a estar entre stados Unidos y México promocionando este nuevo álbum, aquí sale a la venta el 14 de julio. eliz porque voy a estar combinando estos dos territorios. A España voy a ir un poco más adelante, voy a ir a promocionarlo más a finales de año. Voy a ir ahora de trabajo, pero voy a pasar algunos días con mi familia, me hace muchísima ilusión, no sabes cuanto. Mis sobrinos se mueren de ganas de ver a su tita Shai, y es algo que me tiene muy ilusionada el poder llevarles…porque ellos ni han visto las fotos todavía, entonces voy a llevarles las fotos, el material…porque no tengo el disco fisicamente, mas que el master, entonces se los voy a llevar asi para que lo escuchen. Me hace mucha ilusión el poder compartirles en mi tierra todo lo que estoy haciendo aquí, pero si se me queda la espinita clavada de que quiero que vengan a verme en concierto aquí en los Estados Unidoso en México. A ver si prontito me traigo a mi family para que me vean.
Por cierto, ¿Cuándo vas a estar aquí en Los Angeles en concierto?Bueno, en Los Angeles exactamente no sé. Aquí en California acabo deestar en Ontario y en Bakersfield. De hecho, en febrero inicié con un concierto aquí en Los Angeles en un antro gay, maravilloso me recibieron, yo creo que en mi vida me han recibido tan acaloradamente como en este lugar, en el Circus Disco, increible, me faltan palabras.
Que bonitas las fotos que te tomaron para Corazón Ranchero, con tus flores en el pelo, tu zarape. Ay, sí. Una mezcla entre México y España. Esas raices que nos unen.

When speaking of Shaila Dúrcal, it inevitably causes us to remember her mother, Rocío Dúrcal, the legendary singer and icon in Latin musical history. But now Shaila is making her own career on solid ground. She has talent and a great personality. She is releasing her third album Corazón Ranchero, and I had the opportunity to interview her to talk about the album as well as other issues including her thoughts of Juan Gabriel.
Alberto: Finally you’ve declared yourself as having a “Ranchero Heart”. Shaila: A new album, a ranchero one, my ranchero heart. It’s wonderful because it’s finally here. The public had been demanding it. I have always sung with mariachis, thanks to that wonderful legacy that my mom left me, and thanks to it now I can offer an album completely ranchero. I have been opening concerts for Vicente Fernández sharing these songs from my new album.
Please describe your new album and tell us about your first single. The first single here in the United States will be Dos Coronas a mi Madre. It has a strong meaning for me, because with this song I remember my mom, everybody has her presence in their thoughts and hearts. In Mexico, the first single will be Y Llegaste Tú, it’s a song from El Recodo, that’s one of the first songs that I heard from Banda El Recodo; it’s a great dream for me to be able to sing it. I have many friends in Sinaloa and I love this kind of music. I enjoy singing it very much. In this album all the songs are originally rancheras. Some of them we had to adapt to the genre. Songs like Tatuajes or Tu Cárcel…songs that everybody knows. Some of these songs I knew when I was a child, because of my mom and my Mexican family. Others, I heard for the first time during the five years I lived in Mexico City. I wanted to include Las Llaves de mi Alma as a gift to my grandfather Vicente Fernández, who gave me the opportunity to sing here in the United States. It’s very nice to sing Cenizas, En Mi Viejo San Juan, because I’m a fan of Javier Solis. There are classic songs that I wanted to sing, like Tu Infame Engaño.
Why different singles in México and in the United States? They are different territories. I had the opportunity to sing these songs during my concerts with Vicente Fernández and I listened to what people wanted to hear in the U.S. and in Mexico. It’s also a decision of my music label. But it’s fun, because this way I can sing different songs during the promotion and my presentations. By the end of this year the album will be released in Spain. Let’s see what they will want to hear.
Will there be a baby anytime soon? Not yet. I will wait a couple of years. I want to (have a child) but I have to work very hard first, I need to have my finances in order. We just bought a house and we need to finish it. We want to enjoy our marriage, and when God wants the children they will come. But I want a girl first.
So you are living in Mexico City now? Yes, It’s been five years now. Wonderful, I’m very happy living here. Everybody tell me “are you sure?” Totally, I love it.
I heard your album, I liked it, but it includes many sad songs. Was that the concept you wanted? I think that ranchera music is sentimental, and many songs have that feeling, but it gets complemented with the happiness that I’m feeling. All these feelings mix and complement each other on the same album. Y Llegaste Tú is very happy, not everything is sad in this world.
Your first album was Recordando, and now we have Corazón Ranchero, but between the two, there was another album we didn’t hear here in the United States; tells us about Tanto Amor. I have had that duality, singing pop music and ranchera music, because of my mom. And I have the influence of three cultures the American, the Spaniard and the Mexican. And I always try to combine the three cultures in my shows, that gives a great flow to the show. There’s something for everyone. Tanto Amor is a pop album, with a very modern beat and I think that many people will identify with the lyrics of Tanto Amor.
Is this lack of promotion because of the change of the music label? The change was prior. All I know is it was not my fault. The poor music labels are in a very bad state, and well, what we can do. They need to be rescued a little. You have been opening concerts for Vicente Fernández and Cristian Castro. How are people reacting when you show up on stage? It’s wonderful. There are not enough words to describe the love I receive, the audience gives me 100% and that love they felt for my mom, they are now giving on stage. It’s not the same listening to a CD and seeing an artist performing live, the experience changes a lot. I hope you can come see me performing and that you can feel what I’m feeling when I’m on stage. It’s a very emotional sensation to be able to experience the different reactions, the smiles, and the tears. These feelings stay with me, and I always remember these moments.
There are some issues that may be hard to talk about. At the present time, what is your opinion of Juan Gabriel? What it should be? He is a wonderful artist, a great composer. I believe that he marks a before and an after in Mexico. He still is one of the best. He marked a big change in Ranchera Music. He gave my mother a wonderful opportunity and in the same way my mother gave that to him. They were perfect cufflinks and both were good for the other’s career. I feel pleased because I can sing many of Alberto’s songs, and I admire him a lot, as an artist and as a composer, and hope we have him for many more years.
Do you have any comment on the gossip that surely you have heard (supposedly from Juan Gabriel)? Well, I haven’t heard anything sweetheart! I always get informed from the media, what gossip?
It’s better to leave it that way. Please tell us about your promotional plans for Corazón Ranchero. Well, sweetheart, here am I in Los Angeles. I’ll be promoting the album in Mexico and the United States. I’ll be promoting it in Spain towards the end of this year. I’ll be spending some time in Spain soon visiting my family. My nephews want to see their aunty Shai and I can’t wait to see them. They haven’t seen
the pictures from my new album, and haven’t heard the songs. I’m taking these materials with me for them. It’s a great dream for me to show them what I’m doing and I would love them to see me in concert either in Mexico or here in the United States.
Are you going to be per forming anytime soon in Los Angeles? Well, exactly in Los Angeles I still don’t know. Here in California, I recently performed in Ontario and Bakersfield. In fact, I started in February here in Los Angeles; it was a gay club, Circus Disco and they welcomed me in an incredible way. There are not enough words to describe it…it was just incredible.
The pictures for your new album are great, with flowers in your hair and a zarape. Oh, yes. It’s a mix of Mexico and Spain. Those roots mixed together.
