Working outside during summer or frolicking at the beach for countless hours with friends can be very hard on your body, especially when it’s super hot. Whether you’re a queer person working outdoors or just a bunch of gays having a beach blast, it’s important to stay safe and healthy and avoid heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other heat-related illness. Here are some simple steps to help you beat the heat and stay well this summer.
Know the Dangers
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke: These are serious problems caused by too much heat. If you feel dizzy, very tired, or sick to your stomach, you might have heat exhaustion. Heat stroke is even worse and can make you very confused or even pass out. It’s very dangerous and you need help right away.
Dehydration: This means your body doesn’t have enough water. Signs include a dry mouth, dark-colored pee, and feeling dizzy.
Drink Water
Stay Hydrated: Always carry water with you and drink it often, even if you’re not thirsty. Try to drink a cup of water every 15-20 minutes.
Avoid Soda and Coffee: These drinks can make you more thirsty. Water is best.
Eat Water-Rich Foods: Foods like watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers help keep you hydrated.
Dress for the Weather
Wear Light Clothes: Choose loose, light-colored clothes to stay cooler.
Use Hats and Sunglasses: A hat with a wide brim and sunglasses can protect your face and eyes from the sun.
Sunscreen: Put on sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply it every two hours, especially if you’re sweating.
Take Breaks
Rest in the Shade: Take breaks in a cool, shady spot or inside where it’s cooler. This helps your body cool down.
Work with a Buddy: Team up with someone to watch for signs of heat problems. Look out for each other.
Know Your Rights
Water and Shade: You have the right to water and shade while working. These help keep you safe.
Report Problems: If your workplace doesn’t have enough water, shade, or breaks, tell your boss or a worker rights group.
Look Out for Each Other
Community Support: Help each other stay safe. Talk about how to stay cool and watch for signs of heat problems.
Be Prepared
First Aid: Learn basic first aid for heat problems. Knowing what to do can save lives.
Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency numbers, like local health services and hospitals.
In Conclusion
Stay safe this summer by drinking water, dressing cool, taking breaks, and looking out for each other. Your health is important! And most of all, have fun!
