The ART of José L. de Juan

The ART of José L. de Juan

In Madrid I studied graphic design and when I came to work in United States, I worked at Dreamworks I started creating effects in computer for films. I like to paint everything, usually landscapes, I like to paint the human figure, and above all, I love to draw the the male figure. I also do some illustrations that could qualify as male erotic.

California Arts Club
It is a very ancient institution, founded in Pasadena nearly 100 years ago and through it, many painters of the Californian impressionism have passed by. Renown artists I might add… Now a days it is sort of a club. You get accepted by presenting 10 paintings. I was accepted two years ago. They also have a yearly award called “the Gold Medal”.

Study of Special Effects
This is my regular job, although my passion is painting. We are a large team, we make films such as Alvin and the Chipmunks. Once they have made the computer model of the character, I am in charge of giving it texture. If it has hair, I put hair, adding color and brightness to the skin, etc.

Watercolors
I like to use watercolor because it is a quick method, when you’re with a model and there are many people, you use only pencil. The poses are short in duration of about 10 or 20 minutes, therefore using oil paints is impossible. The watercolor goes a bit beyond that of pencil, it has a transparency that I like, and sometimes spots that form are involuntary but I like that kind of abstraction that is formed. It is like a lottery, there is no trying to control it much. A drawing can take me only 5 minutes. Most of my drawings are with live models, there is more spontaneity.

Models
I’ve only hired models on two occasions. It is quite expensive and it is best to do so in a communal study, although it does not give you as much freedom. But for example with Miguel Angel, he organizes sessions with models at Tom of Findland or at his home and sometimes these sessions use female models. At this club we are interested only in male models, that is what we like.

Produces District
I am doing a series of vendors in the Produce District in Los Angeles. It was my partner Armando who recommended me to paint there. There is a seller of elotes; I have one of a man that carries water; there is a lady selling hats…and it is a series that reflects a little part of Los Angeles. When you drive by this area people say “this is so ugly” but I bring out the bearty in these areas that usually are ignored. They are not always the fields of poppies, Tuscany, etc. You do not need much money to travel, beauty exists everywhere.

Exhibits
I have just completed an exhibition in Downtown Los Angeles called “Portrait of the Arts District”. I have sold 10 paintings, they are of landscapes of buildings or streets in the Arts District of Los Angeles. In April I’m going to have a exhibit with these figures from the market at the Segal Gallery in Monrovia, and another one at the José Vera Gallery here in Los Angeles on Colorado Blvd.
