Las Promesas Rotas del Presidente Obama
El Presidente Obama, una vez más, no cumplió con su promesa de usar su autoridad executiva para arreglar algunos de los problemas con nuestro distema de inmigración. Hace apenas unos pocos meses, en Junio de este año, el Presidente declaró que para finales del verano usaría su atutoridad para aliviar la pesadilla que muchos de nosotros en la defensa de las comunidades de inmigrantes vivimos, causada por nuestras leyes fallidas de inmigración. Sin embargo, justo antes del Día del Trabajo dió varias excusas sobre por qué necesita esperar hasta finales de año para tomar acción. Lo que no hizo fue mencionar las razones principales de esta dilación, que son nueve asientos en el Senado de los Estados Unidos que actualmente ocupan los Demócratas.
Lo cierto es que el balance de poder en el Congreso se disputa en las elecciones de noviembre. Específicamente, se espera que los Republicanos ganen el control del Senado y que esto haga la vida más complicada para Obama durante sus últimos dos años como Presidente. Los Demócratas en peligro en los estados rojos se muestran cautelosos sobre cualquier intento de cambiar las leyes de inmigración; temen que eso pueda llenar de energía a la base Republicana y por consecuencia sacarlos de sus oficinas.
Al negarse a reconocer la razón detrás de su repentino cambio, el Presidente asume que no somos lo suficientemente inteligentes como para interpretar las movidas del Capitolio. Aun más contundente es su aparente creencia de que los grupos defensores de los inmigrantes y las comunidades de inmigrantes, que fueron decisivos en su elección para la Oficina Oval no tienen ningún otro lugar a donde ir, y que hay que esperar a que él finalmente atienda el problema de inmigración.
El record del Presidente tanto como legislador y como executivo no es un buen augurio para su narrativa.
A pesar de su promesa de ser un amigo para la comunidad inmigrante, como Senador Obama, apoyó la ley que llevó a la fortificación de la frontera sur. Como candidato para Presidente, prometió acción en materia de inmigración en los primeros 100 días de su presidencia – cuando los Demócratas estuvieron en control de ambas cámaras del Congreso. Al hacer campaña para su segundo término como Presidente, prometió una ley de reforma integral de inmigración si era reelegido.
Sin duda, cualquier Presidente necesita de un Congreso que esté dispuesto a trabajar con él para pasar legislaciones. Sin embargo, es difícil creer que después de seis años, este Presidente no ha tenido oportunidades para trabajar con el Congreso para reformar nuestras leyes de inmigración y aún más sorprendente son sus declaraciones de que está tratando de tomar acción.
El señor Obama ya no tiene más elecciones que ganar, asi que puede pensar que ser honesto con los hechos no importa. Sin embargo, también es verdad que él necesita de manera desesperada tener logros que sirvan de legado de sus dos términos en la oficina presidencial. No ser leal a la gente que lo apoyó no le sirve para esa meta, y al mismo tiempo le hace un daño colosal a su partido con propósitos electorales a futuro. Todo esto por un puñado de escaños en el Senado, que de cualquier manera tienden a irse al lado Republicano. Mala movida Señor Presidente!
President Obama’s Broken Promises
President Obama, once again, reneged on his promise to use his Executive Authority to fix some of the problems with our immigration system. As early as a few months ago in June 2014, the President stated that by summer’s end, he would use his authority to ease the nightmare experienced by many of us in the advocacy and immigrant communities caused by our broken immigration laws. However, just before Labor Day, he cited a number of excuses, such as wanting to “dot his i’s and cross his t’s” as to why he needs to wait until the end of the year for any action. He failed to mention the main reasons for his procrastination, which are nine U.S. Senate seats currently held by Democrats.
The fact is that the balance of power in Congress is up for grabs in the upcoming November elections. Specifically, the Republicans are expected to win control of the U.S. Senate – effectively making life harder for the remainder of Obama’s last two years as President. The endangered Democrats in red states are wary of any attempt to overhaul the immigration rules; they fear it would energize the Republican base and thus force them out of the office.
By refusing to affirmatively acknowledge that reason behind his sudden change of heart is the upcoming elections however, the President assumed that we are not smart enough to read the Capitol tea leaves. Even more damning is his apparent belief that the immigrant advocacy groups and the migrant communities who were instrumental in electing him to the Oval Office have no where else to go but to wait around for him to finally address the immigration problem.
The President’s record both as a legislator and an executive do not bode well for his narrative. Despite his promise to be a friend to the immigrant community, as Senator Obama, he supported legislation that led to the fortification of our southern border. As a Candidate for President, he promised action on immigration within the first 100 days of his presidency – when the Democrats were in control of both houses of Congress. In campaigning for his second term as President, he promised a comprehensive immigration reform law if he got reelected.
No doubt – any President needs a Congress thats willing to work with him and draft legislation. However, its hard to believe that after 6 years, this President has had no opportunities with regards to working with Congress in reforming our immigration laws and more striking is his claim that he is still trying to “dot his i’s and cross his “t’s”.
Mr. Obama has no more elections to win, so he might assume that massaging the facts don’t matter. However, it is also true that he is desperately in need of a legacy-saving achievement for his two terms in office. Not being fort right and honest with his base and supporters does not bode well for reaching that goal while simultaneously doing colossal damage to his party’s electoral future. This all for a handful of Senate seats which are set to switch to the Republicans anyway. Bad move, Mr. President!
