BACKGROUND/TRAYECTORIA: Growing up in El Salvador during the 80’s was a very difficult experience because of the horrifying civil war that lasted 10 years. I was 3 years old when I saw my father for the last time and I grew up without a mother. Despite the fact that my childhood was very violent and unstable, I never lost faith that someday things would get better. I came to the US 12 years ago and I promised myself that I would have a house, a good job, and that I would speak English well before I turn 30. Last year, I bought my first house. Now, I teach English as a second language (ESL), and this June, I will graduate from CSULA with a Master’s Degree. If I would describe myself in one word, it would be “survivor.”
Crecer en El Salvador durante los 80’s fue una experiencia muy difícil por lo horrible de la guerra civil que duró 10 años. Tenía 3 años cuando vi a mi padre por última vez y crecí sin una madre. A pesar de que mi niñez fue muy violenta e inestable, nunca perdí la fé en que algún día las cosas cambiarían para bien. Vine a los EE.UU. hace 12 años y me prometí que tendría una casa, un buen trabajo, y que hablaría bien inglés antes de cumplir 30 años. El año pasado, compré mi primera casa. Ahora, enseño inglés como segunda lengua (ESL), y en junio me graduaré de CSULA con una maestría. La manera como me describiría en una palabra sería “sobreviviente.”
RELATIONSHIP/RELACIONES: In 2009, I ended a relationship that lasted 9 years. I do not care about age, race, or skin color as long as the person has a good sense of humor because I am always laughing and telling jokes. Currently, I am single but someday I would like to fall in love again.
En el 2009 terminé una relación que duró 9 años. No me importa la edad, raza, o color de piel de alguien, mientras tenga buen sentido del humor, porque estoy siempre riendo y haciendo bromas. Actualmente, estoy soltero, pero me gustaría enamorarme nuevamente.
LIKES/LE GUSTA: I am an animal lover. I like all types of animals, especially tigers. I like cooking. I cook everyday, 3 times a day and I can cook all kinds of food. But what brings joy to my life the most is my job. I teach adult ESL classes at two community colleges of the LA area. My students are immigrants, mostly undocumented, who come to the US in search of a better lifestyle. Every day, I have the opportunity to connect with my students and to inspire them to not only learn English but to find their own voices in a new country.
Amo los animales. Me gustan todos los animales, especialmente los tigres. Me gusta cocinar. Cocino todos los días, tres veces por día, y puedo cocinar todo tipo de platillos. Pero lo que le da felicidad a mi vida es mi trabajo. Doy clases de inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) para adultos en dos colegios comunitarios en el área de Los Angeles. Mis estudiantes son inmigrantes, la mayoría indocumentados, quienes vinieron a los EE.UU. en busca de una mejor vida. Cada día, tengo la oportunidad de conectarme con mis estudiantes y de inspirarlos no solamente para que aprendan inglés pero también para que encuntren sus propias voces en un nuevo país.
DISLIKES/LE DISGUSTA: I do not like to watch scary movies because I have problems sleeping at night. I do not like the taste of beer because it makes me throw up. I try to stay away from people without ambitions or goals because, usually, they tend to be lazy and irresponsible. Something that has always bothered me a lot is the discrimination and disrespect against indigenous communities.
No me gusta ver películas de miedo porque tengo problemas para dormir en la noche. No me gusta el sabor de la cerveza porque me hace vomitar. Trato de mantenerme alejado de personas sin ambiciones o metas porque, usualmente tienden a ser flojos e irresponsables. Algo que siempre me ha molestado es la discriminación y falta de respeto contra las comunidades indígenas.
HOBBIES/PASATIEMPOS: I try to exercise as much as I can. I read anything about Egypt. In fact, the name Osiris comes from ancient Egypt. He was the god of life and death. I speak English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese but something I have always wanted to do is to take sign language classes.
Trato de hacer tanto ejercicio como me sea posible. Leo todo lo que puedo sobre Egipto. De hecho, el nombre Osiris viene del antiguo Egipto. Fue el dios de la vida y la muerte. Hablo inglés, español, y portugués de Brasil, pero algo que siempre he querido hacer es tomar clases de lenguaje de señas.
SEXUAL FANTASY/FANTASIA SEXUAL: I do not have any sexual fantasies because I have already fulfilled all of them. However, in Summer, it is always very nice to go to the beach at night and lay on the sand, underneath the starts while the warm gentle breeze wraps up my body and my feet feel the waves flowing to the shore as I start to melt away in the arms of that special someone.
No tengo fantasías sexuales porque ya las he hecho realidad todas. Sin embargo, en el verano, es agradable ir a la playa durante la noche y acostarme en la arena, bajo las estrellas, mientras la tibia brisa envuelve mi cuerpo y mis pies sienten las olas llegando a la orilla, mientras me dejo atrapar por los brazos de alguien especial.
