Nelly Furtado – Uplifting Spiris!

Nelly: Diferentes productores. Rodney Jerkins, Salaam Remi, Bob Rock, Rick Nowles, Fraser T. Smith, Tiesto, The Kenyan Boys Choir, Ace Primo, Sara Tavares, Dylan Murray un artista en mi casa disquera Nelstar. Es dance, rock, folk, hip-hop, reggae, world music.

A veces cambian.

OK, OK, Mmmm… creo que yo recomendaría la canción llamada ‘Waiting for the night’.

Samara: ¿Algunas últimas palabras a tus fans hispano parlantes?

Samara: ¿Algunas otras fechas?

Nelly: Aww. Fue un placer hablar contigo. Muchas gracias y me puedes seguir por tweeter @ NellyFurtado. Te cuidas, Adiós.

Nelly Furtado – Uplifting Spiris!

In the world of pop music female singers are a plenty. The overtly sexual, lip synching manequins rule the charts. But thank Goddess that we still have real true female singers that keep us interested in today’s music scene. Enter one Nelly Furtado. La Furtado, who sings in several languages writes and produces her own music, and has even dabbled in acting (will be seen in an upcoming episode of 90210) is back again this fall with a whole new album. This time she goes back to her teens to recall memories of vacations in S Gabriel, Portugal, good times in her hometown and touches on spirituality. Spirit Indestructable, released Sept. 18th is a gumbo of musical genres. Working with Rodney Jerkins, Dj Tiesto, and Di Genius makes for some very interesting and welcoming sounds. You’ve all heard the first single Big Hoops, of which I wore mine the day I interviewed her, Parking Lot is getting the play now and you can even see the video for Spirit Indestructible on youtube. Nelly Furtado is one hot mama and a total sweetheart. For my second exclusive interview for Adelante with Ms Furtado we stick to the music. Gone are the days when I inquire about the plastic on the couch. For you kids out there, it’s an old school thing but Nelly and I knew what we were talking about…

Samara: How does it feel to be back with new music?
Nelly: Incredible! This new album just kind of came out of nowhere. I kind of got really inspired. A lot of years in the making. I don’t know there’s a lot of positive energy, a lot of adrenaline. It was exciting to share that energy with my fans. And you know its been fun performing the songs live as well.

Samara: Can you tell us about the title Spirit Indestructible?
Nelly: Yeah, Spirit Indestructible is just the way I’ve been feeling lately about two, three years. You know, just king of coming into this new hope for the future and just really believing in the moment. I like the title because it’s so strong. And again there’s a lot of positive themes on the album. And I believe we all kind of have indestructible spirits. And I’ve been working with this group called Free the Children and they build schools around the world and I just make trips visiting their sites in Kenya for the last couple of years in Africa, inspired me a lot. I don’t know, when I wrote this album it was a pretty joyful thing. I’ve had moments of reflection as well. Over all its pretty energetic.

Samara: And danceable of course.
Nelly: Oh yeah, yeah. I like to make people move their bodies but then I also like to make them think sometimes. (Laughs)

Samara: Who do you collaborate with on this album?
Nelly: Pretty collabo heavy. Different producers. Rodney Jerkins, Salaam Remi, Bob Rock, Rick Nowles, Fraser T. Smith, Tiesto, The Kenyan Boys Choir, Ace Primo, Sara Tavares, Dylan Murray an artist on my label Nelstar. So yeah it’s all those dance, rock, folk, hip-hop, reggae, world music. So it’s pretty ecclectic. It reminds me a lot of Whoa Nelly because it’s fun and the ecclecticism and just the purity.

Samara: Is Spirit Indestructible the single out now?
Nelly: In North America the next single is Parking Lot. Spirit Indestrutable is the single over seas in Europe. Spirit Indestructable comes out on September 18th.

Samara: How do you decide which single is for what country and when to release them?
Nelly: We basically… You know it’s different cause I have a global audience. Different countries have different tastes so it worked well last time as well where I put out Maneater over seas and Promiscuous in North America. That worked out well for us. We had two simultanious number ones at the same time, different continents. With this album, we did a similar approach really, we released Big Hoops first and then put out Spirit Indestructible over seas and then went with Parking Lot in North America. The album comes out a couple of weeks later. It just depends. With the last album I even had a Spanish track going at the same time. I think the best albums have multiple songs out at the same time. I just think its about people getting into the vibe of the album. Cause I’m definitely an album artist. I don’t think you can really [get]what my albums sound like from one single. I’m not really that kind of artist. It’s more about buying into the whole message and just getting into believing that the rest of the album is good. I think that’s what’s happening now.

Samara: Do you know ahead of time which are going to be the singles to be released?
Nelly: We think we know. Sometimes it changes. In the studio you naturally feel which ones you think have that impact. And for me Big Hoops always kinda felt like something I wanted to present this album with off the top. It had a real energy and an attitude that I really liked. Usually the label knows what your first three, four singles are. Cause usually you can tell by stickers the artist puts on the cover of their album. Whatever the songs featured usually will become the singles. But usually I get a vibe or a certain magic when I feel the song is a single.

Samara: I was wearing my big hoop earrings today in honor of our interview.
Nelly: Really? Wow! You are a fan for real.

Samara: Can you tell us about High Life which you say it’s about what happens after you find success?
Nelly: High Life is a song inspired by this idea that people have in general you go after your dreams, you go after your goals and you think success is some kind of finish line, end of the race but the reality is it’s not. You still have your whole life to live after that. It seems like people go through mid life crisis because of that. You know you can change your dreams but the reality is real success is just living in the moment and living each day and trying to balance a healthy life. For me I found that through family and through just kinda pursuing my own personal interests like starting my own label and doing my Spanish album. Just making myself happy first. And not worried about so much about being some type of mouse spinning around on a wheel.

Samara: And what can you tell us about fame? Is it all it’s cracked up to be?
Nelly: Uhm… it’s funny I don’t really believe or consider myself famous. It’s kind of so shocking to me when I meet, especially when I meet other artists that grew up listening to me or like my music. It’s like really a trip you know. It’s like… I see myself as the same girl. I try to live a really simple life. I exaggerate that sometimes. And I just kinda really try really hard to live a simple life. I just splurge I think on just maybe traveling and experiences more than anything. “Oh let’s go and experience the world.” Just being able to be an ambassador for Free the Children I think is probably the best thing about fame. And ah… it never gets old meeting fans that tell me my music has helped them through situations or it meant something to them. They really mean it when they say it. And it means a lot to me. And that’s why I make music so that I can connect with people, so that I can connect my emotions with the people. The fact that I have an audience is just… I feel so blessed you know. So many people making, creating things and they never find an audience. So I just feel lucky that I have an audience.

Samara: What do you want to say to your LGBT fans?
Nelly: Uhmm… wow! Just that I hope they connect with this album. I think a lot of themes from my first album that really kind of drew in my fans from the LGBT audiences was that there was a lot of themes of empowerment and individuality and self expression on my first album. And I think that theme kind of remains. Even the Spirit Indestructible really has a theme of empowerment and standing up for yourself in general no matter what situation you’re in. And just thank them for their support over the years. And for the support of my music and all the love.

Samara: What songs do you recommend to the drag queens to perform?
Nelly: Ahh… oh my goodness! OK, OK, hmmm… I think I would recommend the song called Waiting for the Night. Waiting for the Night is this really fun song about waiting till’ night time hoping you might see…  I wrote it kind of remembering a summer vacation I spent in Portugal when I was sixteen kind of like waiting to see this guy that I had a crush on and I never saw him like at the Portuguese, sort of, get togethers out in the village. But it has a great beat. It’s fun. It’s kind of sensual. I think that would be a good one for the queens. And I think Parking Lot as well cause Parking Lot is super fun and cute and were gonna have a big dance sequence in the video so the choreography will be there.

Samara: Any last words to your Spanish speaking fans?
Nelly: Of course my Latin fans especially like the new ones that I’ve made over the past few years have been incredibly supportive, just amazing, have blown me away. And it’s brought me a whole new inspiration and mantaining connection with my fans. And I’m working on a collabo right now for Parking Lot with some possible Latin artists and also gonna be workin on my next Spanish album really soon. So I’m excited! I’ll be in South America hopefully before Christmas.

Samara: Any other tour dates?
Nelly: I just got back from Asia. And will be in South America. And then January and February of 2013 will be in the U.S. and then Canada. And then Europe.

Samara: Great. Thank you so much! I’m a true fan.
Nelly: Aww… It was nice speaking with you. Thank you so much and you can also follow me @NellyFurtado. Take care. Bye.
