INICIOS/BEGINNINGS
Crecí en el área de Lincoln Heights, y en ese tiempo comenzó un movimiento chicano, eran los 70s y comencé como un artista público haciendo murales. Trabajé para César Chávez, y siempre me sentí inspirada por causas políticas y de inmigración. Estábamos muy segregados entonces, como chicanos no convivíamos con gente blanca y mi arte fue reflejando las injusticias sociales y temas relacionados. Estudié en un Colegio Comunitario.
I did grow in the Lincoln Heights area, and at that time there was a chicano movement, it was the 70s and I did start as a public artist painting murals. I did work for Cesar Chavez, and always felt inspired by political causes and immigration. As chicanos we were very segregated then, I didn’t socialize with white people until I went to a community college after high school, so my art reflect those facts and those of social injustice.
MI ARTE/MY ART
Mi arte siempre ha tenido una vertiente política, pero para finales de los 70s el mundo estaba en constante cambio, había un fuerte movimiento de mujeres, pero nosotros(as) como chicanos no nos identificábamos con las causas de la gente blanca americana, y mi arte refleja una perspectiva diferente como mujer chicana.
Los asuntos políticos sobre los que me gusta dibujar tienen que ver principalmente con la explotación a la mujer alrededor del mundo, asuntos como la muerte de las mujeres en Juárez, corrupción política e inmigración.
My art has always been political but by the end of the 70s the world was in constant change, there was a strong women movement but we didn’t identify with the causes of the white American people, so my art reflects a unique perspective as a chicano woman. The policial issues that I like to draw about now have to be with explotation of women around the world, issues like the killing of women in Juarez, political corruption, and immigration.
TÉCNICA/TECHNIQUE
Dibujo usando colores pastel, porque me da la oportunidad de dibujar en color. Dibujo principalmente sobre papel negro, inspirada en las pinturas tipo velvet, donde los colores resaltan de manera magnífica. Disfruto la intimidad del papel, tengo más control, se toca más, y ya que no puedo borrar, tengo que realmente concentrarme en lo que hago. En promedio, mis obras grandes pueden tomarme entre 50 y hasta 100 horas de trabajo para completarlas, pero normalmente trabajo en varias obras a la vez.
I draw using pastel, because it gives me the oportunity to draw in color. I draw mainly over black paper, inspired by velvet paintings, where colors stand up in a magnificent way. I enjoy the intimacy of paper, I have more control, more touch, and since I can’t earase when drawing I really have to commit. In average, my large drawings can take from 50 to up to 100 hours of work to complete, but normally I work on several things at ones.
EXHIBICIONES/EXHIBITS
He sido muy afortunada, porque a pasar de que los museos y galerías por todo el país no están interesados en mostrar arte chicano, hay galerías especializadas en la técnica que yo uso y me reciben con los brazos abiertos. En los museos y galerías en general se ve más exposiciones de arte latinoamericano, donde los invitados son por lo general artistas de Sudamérica.
I have been very lucky, because some galleries that specialize in art on paper have host my art, and I have been in different cities around the country. It’s not easy to have exhibitions at museums and some galleries for chicanos, they are not receptive about it, they sometimes host art from Latinamerican artists but the story is different for Chicanos.
