Inmigración será sin duda un tema recurrente durante las próximas campañas electorales. Otro asunto al que se enfrentarán los políticos son los derechos de los gays.
El partido Republicano está basando sus esperanzas en una agenda anti inmigrante y anti gay. Ya veremos qué tan eficiente será su estrategia para las elecciones de noviembre. Pero, hasta entonces, necesitamos seguir en pie de lucha.
¿Qué significa seguir en pie de lucha? Bueno, aquí están algunos ejemplos:
– No es correcto usar las palabras “bebés anzuelo.” No solamente es ofensivo – sino que también es incongruente. Para aquellos lectores que no están familiarizados con este término, la implicación es que los mexicanos arriesgan sus vidas al cruzar por los desiertos, padeciendo el calor de tres dígitos, arriesgando ser mordidos por serpientes, y librando muchos otros factores para venir a los EE.UU. y tener bebés, los cuales después de un tiempo someterán aplicaciones para sus tarjetas verdes.
Bueno – nada puede estar más lejos de la verdad. Si ese es el plan de toda esa gente que cruza la frontera ilegalmente – deben de planear muy a futuro. Un bebé que nace en los EE.UU. no podrá someter aplicaciones para sus padres hasta que tenga 21 años! Y después de eso los padres tendrían que regresar a México y aplicar por un perdón de inadmisibilidad, y este puede ser o no ser aprobado. Ese es un plan a muy largo plazo, el cual yo no creo que los inmigrantes tengan en mente mientras se enfrentan a los peligros al cruzar la frontera.
– No es correcto usar el término “estilo de vida” – cuando se refieren a la comunidad GLBT. El estilo de vida se escoge. Mi homosexualidad no fue una opción. Mi cena de anoche fue una opción.
– No es correcto escuchar con frecuencia que las personas gays buscan derechos especiales, cuando en realidad, estamos buscando los mismos derechos que las personas heterosexuales. Los derechos humanos no fueron inventados por políticos. Los derechos humanos son derechos inalienables de ser y vivir como humanos, lo que incluye amar a las personas que uno escoja.
– No es correcto pedirme que espere para adquirir mi ciudadanía completa. Ya estoy en mis 40’s. No quiero esperar otros 40 años hasta que una mayoría ignorante finalmente acceda a reconocerme como un ciudadano completo. Es tiempo de que nuestros políticos y jueces compongan las inequidades a las que nos hemos enfrentado en nuestra comunidad por generaciones.
Asi que, mi resolución de año nuevo es hacerme escuchar. Voy a corregir a todo aquel que margine a mi comunidad o a mi. Continuaré defendiendo a la comunidad inmigrante. Y no me quedaré callado cuando vea a la mayoría inmiscuirse en mis derechos como un hombre inmigrante.
Espero que tengamos un 2012 saludable, feliz y próspero, para todos.
A New Beginning?
Immigration is sure to be a hot topic during the upcoming election season. Another issue facing the politicians are gay rights.
The Republican Party has hedged its bets on an anti immigrant and an anti gay agenda. We shall see how effective their strategy will be for them in November. But until then, we need to keep up the fight.
What do I mean by keeping up the fight? Well, here are some examples:
It’s not OK to use the words “anchor babies.” Not only its offensive – but also its factually wrong. For those readers who are not familiar with this term, the implication is that Mexicans risk their lives by crossing the deserts, enduring the triple digit heat, rattle snakes, snipers etc. to come to the U.S. and have babies, who will then turn around and file for green cards for them.
Well – nothing can be further from the truth. If that is the plan for all those people who cross the border illegally – they must have a lot of aforethought. For one thing, that U.S. born baby wont be able to petition for his/her parents until the age of 21! Moreover, the parents would have to return to Mexico and apply for a waiver of inadmissibility, based on hardship to their child, which may or may not get approved. That is one long term planning which I don’t think any of the migrants have in mind as they face off the dangers of crossing the border;
It’s not OK to use the term lifestyle – when referencing the LGBT community. Lifestyle is a choice. My homosexuality was not a choice. But my dinner menu last night was a choice.
It’s not OK to constantly hear that gay people are seeking special rights, when in reality, we are seeking the same rights as the hetero crowd. Human rights were not invented by any politician. Human rights are inalienable rights of being and living as a humans, which includes loving the person of your choice.
It’s not OK to ask me to wait to realize my full citizenship. I am in my forties. I do not want to wait another 40 years for some ignorant majority to finally agree to recognize me as a full citizen. Its time for our politicians and Judges to address the inequality that we’ve faced in our community for generations.
So, my new year’s resolution is to be loud. I will correct anyone who marginalizes my community or me. I will continue to defend the immigrant community. And I will not stay silent when I see the majority trampling on my rights as an immigrant gay man.
