Sabíamos que llegaría el día. Esperamos pacientemente por el veredicto. ¡Y entonces sucedió! El 4 de agosto se convirtió en un momento histórico para la Comunidad Gay, Lésbica, Bisexual y Transgénero (GLBT). Fue el día que la Proposición 8 fue declarada inconstitucional: un día de victoria y celebración; un día de reconocimiento y validación.
Agentes de Cambio, amigos, y aliados de Proyecto Orgullo — el Programa de Justicia Social y Abogacía de BIENESTAR – celebró este evento histórico en solidaridad con otros grupos GLBT en el evento de Oración Comunitaria por la Justicia Social. Nuestro mensaje fue claro: “Juntos somos uno. Siendo una comunidad GLBT unida nada puede derrotarnos. La igualdad ocurrió hoy y estamos listos para luchar por lo que es justo, ¡y por lo que es nuestro!”
Aunque la lucha no ha terminado, gran parte del arduo trabajo está finalmente dando frutos. Con esfuerzos de ganar el derecho al matrimonio, este año Proyecto Orgullo implementó cuatro talleres de Agentes de Cambio en 1) Liderazgo GLBT, 2) Contando tu Historia, y 3) Medios de Comunicación y Participación de Funcionarios Electos. Nos hemos asociado con Vote For Equality de Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center y también con el National Gay & Lesbian Task Force para fortalecer nuestros esfuerzos.
La Proposición 8 nos ha enseñado muchas lecciones. Pero una en particular para considerar seriamente es que el participar en un “Movimiento Reaccionario” tiene serios retos. Como Comunidad GLBT, reaccionamos tarde. Grupos de Justicia Social e Igualdad de Derechos se movilizaron sólo como resultado a que perderíamos el derecho al matrimonio. Al igual que grupos e individuos que tienen como agenda el despojar a personas GLBT de nuestros Derechos Civiles, nosotros también debemos tener un plan. El Privilegio Heterosexual continúa con la opresión: ¡y tiene que parar!
Al celebrar, mantengamos en mente que la lucha por la Igualdad del Matrimonio no ha terminado. Si bien California revocó la Proposición 8, el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo no tiene el reconocimiento del gobierno federal. Hay mucho más trabajo que hacer. La Proposición 8 se convirtió en el catalizador y el combustible para el diálogo entre los diversos grupos GLBT. El fuego tiene que continuar encendido.

Victory!
We knew the day would come. We waited patiently for the verdict. And then it happened! August 4th became a milestone for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community (LGBT). It was the day Proposition 8 was ruled unconstitutional and overturned: a day of victory and celebration; a day of acknowledgment and validation.
Agents of Change, friends, supporters and allies of Proyecto Orgullo — BIENESTAR’s Social Justice and Advocacy Program — celebrated this historic event in solidarity with other LGBT groups at the Community Prayer for Social Justice. Our message was clear: “Together we are one. As one united LGBT Community nothing can defeat us. Equality happened today and we are ready to fight for what is right, and for what is ours!”
Although the struggle is not over, a lot of the hard work is finally paying off. In efforts to win marriage back, this year Proyecto Orgullo delivered four Agents of Change workshops on 1) LGBT Leadership, 2) Telling your Story, and 3) Media Advocacy & Engaging Elected Officials. We have partnered up with Vote For Equality at the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center and The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force to strengthen our efforts.
Proposition 8 has taught us many lessons. But a particular one to take to heart is that engaging in “Reactionary Movement” has serious challenges. As an LGBT Community, we reacted late. Social Justice and Equal Rights groups began to mobilize as a result that our right to marry would be gone. Just like groups and individuals that have an agenda to strip LGBT individuals of our Civil Rights, we must too have a plan. Heterosexual privilege has long been getting away with oppression: and it has to stop!
As we celebrate, let’s be mindful that the fight for Marriage Equality is not over. While California overturned Proposition 8, same-sex matrimony has no federal government recognition. There is a lot more work to do. Proposition 8 became the catalyst and the fuel for dialogue among various LGBT groups. Let’s keep the fire burning.
