15 Años de Revista Adelante - Adelante Magazine

La Publicación Gay Latina de Mayor Tiempo en Circulación en los EE.UU.

Revista Adelante celebra 15 años de publicación este mes. Este es un increible logro para nuestra comunidad, y nos sentimos muy agradecidos con nuestros lectores, anunciantes, escritores, modelos, artistas, diseñadores gráficos, fotógrafos y otras personas que han hecho esto posible. Lo hemos hecho todos juntos por los últimos 15 años.

La razón principal por la que iniciamos Adelante en 1997 fue la necesidad que había de educar a la comunidad latina gay sobre el VIH/SIDA llegando a los diferentes lugares disponibles en el condado. Los fundadores de la revista (Al Ballesteros, Pepe Torres y Enrique Romero) estábamos involucrados como activistas/defensores de la comunidad, trabajando para parar la propagación de la epidemia. En 1997 la información sobre la epidemia del VIH latinos gays no se promovía adecuadamente en los medios gays. La concientización y educación de prevención para los latinos gays era muy poca en los medios para las masas. Mientras había decenas de miles de latinos gays en el Condado de Los Ángeles y en California, las revistas impresas no estaban cubriendo de manera adecuada los asuntos de los latinos.

El nombre “Adelante” fue escogido porque entre sus significados está el progreso y el seguir adelante. Era la intención de la Revista Adelante contribuir al progreso de la comunidad latina gay. La producción de una revista bicultural, bilingüe, gratuita, que contribuya al bienestar y progreso de la comunidad se volvió nuestra misión.

Un poco después del lanzamiento de la revista, no hubo duda de que se necesitaba una revista gay con formato Español/Inglés en Los Ángeles y en California. Pronto quedó claro que la comunidad buscaba algo diferente a la información general en relación al VIH/SIDA. Para cumplir con la demanda de nuestros lectores, Adelante comenzó a cubrir eventos de la comunidad, noticias en general, política, artículos de interés, celebridades, modelos y artistas. La comunidad de negocios latinos gays rapidamente apoyó la misión de la revista apoyándonos anunciándose con nosotros.

Durante estos últimos 15 años, creemos que nos hemos mantenido fieles a nuestra misión original para educar a la comunidad sobre el VIH/SIDA. En cada edición desde el principio, Revista Adelante contiene información sobre HIV/SIDA, prevención, pruebas y tratamiento. Creemos y realmente esperamos que esta covertura permanente haya tenido un impacto en esquivar el esparcimiento de esta terrible infección. Eso es algo de lo que nos sentimos inmensamente orgullosos.

La comunidad se identificó con Revista Adelante y nos sugirió secciones y columnas. Quizás recuerdes algunas. “Papitito” fue una maravillosa y divertida caricatura que seguía la vida de un Oso Latino del barrio, producida por Isaac Reddick. El Dr. Damián Goldvarg ha producido una columna de superación personal que ha sido tremenda inspiración por más de diez años. Enrique Romero (uno de los fundadores) escribió los Homo Horóscopos de Adelante por los primeros 13 años. Disfrutamos de los horóscopos de Enrique, y nos divertimos con ellos. Samara y sus entrevistas con celebridades y personalidades drag famosas le han dado a Adelante reconocimiento nacional en esta comunidad. Nuestras columnas de salud escritas por el Dr. Daniel Pearce, el personal de AltaMed Helath Services y Bienestar han proveido invaluable educación sobre VIH, salud mental y salud física. Sabemos que nuestras comunidades son más saludables por sus esfuerzos.

El abogado defensor de los derechos de los inmigrantes Ally Bolour ha mantenido una columna mensual por más de 10 años. Lambda Legal también ha mantenido una columna regular por varios años. Este trabajo provee educación vital en asuntos de inmigración y defensa de los derechos de miembros en nuestra comunidad GLBT de importancia para nuestros lectores. Más recientemente, Octavio Pozos y sus columnas de ejercicio han remarcado la importancia del ejercicio y la dieta. La covertura que Victoria Ruiz le da a la comunidad transgénero ha llenado un importante hueco con nuestros lectores y nuestros lectores transgénero. Gipsy, quien por varios años también cubrió celebridades y asuntos relacionados con la comunidad transgénero sirvió como vocera de la revista por algún tiempo. Gipsy apareció en varios programas de televisión nacional promoviendo el trabajo de Adelante y hablando sobre los asuntos relacionados con la comunidad gay latina. Alberto Orozco ha sido nuestro enlace regular con la industria de la música y entretenimiento, escribiendo reseñas de artista nuevos y celebridades admiradas por nuestros lectores. Los jóvenes han sido bien representados con la asistencia de Joseph García y su columna Legacy.

Agradecemos a nuestro DJ residente – DJ Rubín, quien nos ha mantenido al día con la escena de la música produciendo el listado de los “Top 20”, en conjunto con DJ Eclipse. Ambos nos han proveido con discos para regalar a nuestros lectores de manera mensual. Ensueños de Eduardo Ugalde fue siempre excitante y probablemente todas sus historias pueden ser publicadas nuevamente y leerse y disfrutarse como si fuera la primera vez que corrieron en Adelante. No podemos olvidar a Fernando Gutiérrez quien escribió una columna de comida y recetas por varios años, se llamaba La Cocinita de Chi-Chi.

También, tristemente hemos perdido escritores y artistas gráficos a lo largo del camino, incluyendo al maravilloso Oscar Reconco, un defensor de la comunidad por muchos años, y un maestro de la espiritualidad. Oscar escribió una columna regular para Adelante, lo hizo hasta el día de su muerte. Así lo hizo también Kellie Haadvedt, quien escribió bajo el nombre de María Etta Anabel. Kellie murió el mes pasado y muchos de ustedes leyeron su columna de superación personal sobre Terapia mediante Canalización de Energía (Energy Therapy). Antonio Yepes, uno de nuestros primeros artistas gráficos también murió. Los extrañamos mucho a todos.

Luego están las portadas. Nos han dicho en innumerables ocasiones que las portadas de Adelante son las mejores de todas las revistas gays. Hemos contado con gran material en cuestión de modelos para trabajar. Un saludo a nuestros 180 chicos de portada, esperamos que les esté illendo bien. También hemos contado con fotógrafos muy talentosos, incluyendo a Lorenzo Gómez, José Aguilar, Joseph León, Oded Levy y Paul Culver. Estos fotógrafos han hecho un trabajo espectacular.

Luego, están las personas que “detrás de escena” coordinan todo. Alberto Orozco nuestro manejador de oficina ha estado con la publicación desde el tercer ejemplar. Él ha sido tremendo en el manejo de los asuntos de la oficina y manteniendo las operaciones rutinarias para seguir adelante. Nuestros artistas gráficos incluyendo a Ricardo Solis, Miguel Delgado y Jason Jones han mantenido el look de la revista consistente. También agradecemos a nuestro encargado de nuestro sitio en Internet Allen John Adamski.

Finalmente, Pepe Torres, nuestro Editor ha hecho un trabajo sobresaliente por estos últimos 15 años. No podemos agradecerle a Pepe lo suficiente. Él es quien realmente merece todo el reconocimiento por una gran publicación. Ha sido su amor por la revista y su dedicación a la importancia de una publicación bilingüe para la comunidad gay lo que ha permitido que Adelante tenga éxito.

Mencionamos todo esto porque Revista Adelante está enfocada en la familia, los amigos y la comunidad. Adelante no es simplemente una revista impresa o un negocio. Ha sido parte de nuestras vidas y lo hacemos por amor.

Al cumplir esta importante etapa, es nuestra esperanza continuar produciendo una publicación de manera constante, de alta calidad y cumpliendo con las necesidades de nuestra comunidad. Sabemos que tenemos que adaptarnos como sea necesario en este mundo cambiante donde los medios están en constante evolución, explorar otros medios de distribución, incluyendo aumentar nuestra presencia en los teléfonos inteligentes y en el Internet. Tienes nuestro compromiso de hacerlo.

Queremos agrdecer a todos los escritores, fotógrafos, artistas gráficos, distribuidores y contribuidores que han colaborado con Adelante a través de los años. Cuando se hace una lista como esta, es muy probable que omitamos sin querer algún nombre. Realmente esperamos que hayamos incluido a todos.

15 Years of Adelante Magazine:
The Longest Running Latino Gay Monthly Publication in the United States

Adelante Magazine celebrates 15 years of publishing this month. This is an incredible milestone for our community and we are very thankful to all our readers, advertisers, writers, models, artists, graphics, photographers and other supporters who have helped make this happen. We have done great together over these last 15 years together.

The primary reason we started Adelante in 1997 was the need for HIV/AIDS education that would reach gay Latinos in different kinds of venues across the County. The founders of the magazine (Al Ballesteros, Pepe Torres and Enrique Romero) were involved as HIV/AIDS community activists/advocates working to stop the spread of the epidemic. In 1997 information about the HIV epidemic, places to get tested, receive treatment and support for gay Latinos was not being adequately promoted in the gay media. General community awareness and prevention education for gay Latinos was lacking in significant quantities through mass media. While there were tens of thousands of gay Latinos in Los Angeles County and in California, the print magazines were not adequately covering Latino issues.

The name “Adelante” was chosen because among its meanings in English are “progress” and “progression forward”. It was Adelante Magazine’s intention to foster the progress of the gay Latino community. The production of a free bilingual and bicultural magazine that would contribute to the wellbeing and progress of the community became the mission.

Shortly after the launch of the magazine, there was no doubt that a Spanish-English gay magazine was needed here in Los Angeles and in California. It soon became clear the community sought other general information in addition to HIV/AIDS. To meet our reader’s demands, Adelante began covering community events, general news, politics, features, celebrities, models and artists. The Latino gay business community quickly supported the mission of the magazine through its advertising support.

Over these last 15 years, we believe we have stayed true to our original mission to educate the community about HIV/AIDS. In every issue since the beginning Adelante Magazine has contained information about HIV/AIDS, prevention, testing and treatment. We believe and truly hope that this regular coverage has had an impact in curbing the spread of this terrible infection. That is something we are immensely proud of.

The community became involved in Adelante Magazine and came forward with a wealth of ideas for sections and columns. You may remember some. “Papitito” was a wonderful and funny cartoon that chronicled the life of a Latino Bear from the hood produced by artist Isaac Reddick. Dr. Damian Goldvarg has produced a regular self-help column that has been of tremendous inspiration for more than ten years. Enrique Romero (one of the Founders) wrote the Adelante HomoHoroscopes for the first 13 years. Enrique’s horoscopes were enjoyable and entertaining. Samara and her interviews with celebrities and famous drag personalities have caused Adelante national recognition in this community. Our health columns written by Dr. Daniel Pearce, the staffs of AltaMed Health Services and Bienestar have provided invaluable education on HIV, mental health and physical health. We know our communities are healthier because of their efforts.

Immigration rights Attorney Ally Bolour has kept a monthly column going for more than 10 years. Lambda Legal has also kept a regular column going for several years. This work provides vital education on immigration matters of importance to our readers. More recently, Octavio Pozos and his fitness/work out columns have highlighted the importance of exercise and diet. Victoria Ruiz’s coverage of the Transgender community has filled an important gap with our readers and our transgender readers. Gipsy, who for many years has also covered celebrities and transgender community issues also served as a spokes person for the magazine for some time. Gipsy appeared on several national television shows promoting the work of Adelante and speaking to the issues of the gay Latino community. Alberto Orozco has been our regular liaison with the Entertainment and Music Industry, writing reviews on emerging artists and well-known celebrities. The youth community has been well represented with the assistance of Joseph Garcia and his Legacy column.

We are thankful to our resident DJ – DJ Rubín has kept us up-to-date with the music scene by producing the Top 20 Chart, along with DJ Eclipse. Both have also provided giveaways for our readers monthly. Ensueños by Eduardo Ugalde were always hot and probably can all be republished and read just as fresh as they did in the issue they originally ran. We can’t forget Fernando Gutiérrez wrote a food and recipes column for several years called La Cocinita de Chi-Chi.

We also sadly lost writers and graphic artists along the way including the wonderful Oscar Reconco, a long-time community advocate and master of spirituality. Oscar wrote a regular column for Adelante right up until the day he passed away. So did Kellie Haadvedt, who wrote under the name Maria Etta Anabel. Kellie passed away last month and many of you read her self-help column about Energy Therapy. Antonio Yepes, one of our original graphic artists also passed away. We miss them very much.

Then there are the Adelante covers. We have been told countless times that Adelante covers are the best of all gay magazines. We have had great model material to work with. A shout out to our 180 Adelante Cover Boys, we hope you are all well. We have also had very talented photographers including Lorenzo Gomez, Jose Aguilar, Joseph Leon, Oded Levy and Paul Culver. These photographers have done a spectacular job.

Then there are the “behind the scenes” operations people. Alberto Orozco our office manager has been with the publication since the third issue. He has been tremendous in his handling of the office matters and keeping the routine operations moving forward. Our graphic artists including Ricardo Solis, Miguel Delgado and Jason Jones have kept the look consistent. We also thank our web master Allen John Adamski.

Finally, Pepe Torres our Editor has been outstanding over these last 15 years. We can’t thank Pepe enough. He truly deserves all the recognition for a great publication. It has been his love for the magazine and dedication to the importance of a Bilingual publication for the gay community that has made Adelante a success.

We mention all of this because Adelante Magazine has been about family, friends and community. Adelante is not just a print magazine or a business. It has been part of our lives and a labor of love.

As we move past this important milestone, it is our hope to continue producing a high-quality regular publication that meets the needs of our community. We know that we have to adapt as necessary in this changing world of media and encompass other distribution means, including furthering our presence on smart phones and on the web. You have our commitment that we will do that.

We want to thank all the writers, photographers, graphic artists, distributors and contributors that have assisted Adelante over the years. Whenever a list like this is compiled, it is likely that someone is inadvertently not listed. We truly hope we included everyone.
