De un pueblo pequeño en México, a escuela de administración de empresas, a la Universidad DePaul en Chicago, a estilista de pelo en películas en Hollywood. La vida de Javier ha sido tan diversa en experiencias, como los peinados que crea. Recientemente me reuní con Javier para hablar de la vida, su trabajo y los peligros de usar boxers…
¿Qué te motivó a prepararte como estilista?
Luego de trabajar en el mundo de las finanzas por dos años, me di cuenta que los diseñadores no hacían trajes para mexicanos chaparritos como yo, asi que me fui (sonríe). No, ya en serio, un día fui a hacerme un corte en Vidal Sassoon y me encantó lo que hicieron y lo divertidos que parecían al hacerlo. Terminé en Paul Mitchell Academy y continué en Vidal Sassoon.
Dinos sobre tu trabajo en cine.
Trabajé en la película Vincent & Luzy, donde tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con la increible Lupe Ontiveros en su última película. La película se estrenará en Sundance o Berlín el próximo año. Este verano también trabajé en la película Entrapped, protagonizada por la actriz griega Marcella Giannatou.
¿Qué viene a continuación en tu carrera?
Continuar trabajando en cine mientras me enfoco en construir mi clientela y eventualmente abrir mi propio salón.
Si pudieras conocer a cualquier persona en el mundo, ¿quién sería y qué le dirías?
Gandhi, y le preguntaría: “¿Cómo me enseño a mi mismo y a aquellos alrededor mio a ser menos egocéntricos?” Creo que ponemos mucho énfasis en siempre tener y tomar, y hemos olvidado lo gratificante que es ser una persona que da. Cambiar el “¿Qué gano yo?” por “¿Cómo puedo ayudar?”
¿Tres cosas que la gente no sabe de ti?
Mi mamá es marroquí, tengo miedo al fracaso y secretamente quiero ser un esposo en casa.
¿Boxers o calzoncillos?
Calzoncillos, los boxers me meten en problemas…hay mucho movimiento.

From a small town in Mexico, to business school at DePaul University in Chicago, to hair styling in films in Hollywood. Javier’s life has been as diverse in experience as the hairstyles he creates. I recently caught up with Javier to talk about life, work and the dangers of wearing boxers…
What got you into hair styling?
After working in the finance world for two years I realized that designers did not make suits for short Mexicans so I left (He lets out a loud charismatic laugh) No really, one day I went to get a cut in at Vidal Sassoon and I was hooked on what they did and how much fun they had doing it. I ended up at Paul Mitchell Academy and continued at Vidal Sassoon.
Tell us about your work in film.
I worked on the film Vincent & Luzy, where I had the opportunity to work with the amazing Lupe Ontiveros in her last film. The film will premiere either at Sundance or Berlin next year. This summer I also worked on the feature film Entrapped starring Greek film star Marcella Giannatou.
What’s next in your career?
Continue working in film while focusing on building up my clientele and eventually opening up my own salon.
If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and what would say to them?
Gandhi, and I would ask him: “How do I teach myself and those around me to be less selfish?” I think we have placed so much emphasis on always getting and always taking that we have forgotten how rewarding it is to be a giving person. Change the “What’s in it for me?” to “How may I be of service?”
Three things people don’t know about you?
My mother is Moroccan, I’m afraid of failure and I secretly want to be a house husband.
What attracts you most in a man?
In this order: Brain, height, hands and smile.
Boxers or briefs?
Briefs, boxers get me in trouble…there is way too much movement.
