Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco proudly presented the show Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo (Passage through a Timeless World) on Saturday, May 13 at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. Featuring openly gay dancer Adrián Santana and Artistic Director, Carola Zertuche. They fuse Flamenco with live electronic music, violin, and electric guitar played by amazing musicians.
The mind-blowing show was inspired by Zertuche’s 2021 trip to Jordan in the Middle East in 2021. In her words, “Visiting the Wadi Rum Desert, especially, was one of the most incredible experiences of my life: peaceful energy surrounded me like an inexplicable force. I felt the sensation —with the light, the endless red sand, the stars clear in the night sky — that time had ceased to exist, that everything was perfect, that anything could happen. Flamenco, to me, also has that inexplicable energy, and I’d like the audience to feel those same emotions, even if just for the hour and 15 minutes of the show.”
This is Santana’s debut with the company and, although he has been wildly received by audiences all over the world, this is his first time performing in San Francisco. He spoke recently with Laura Moreno.
Interview with Adrián Santana
Laura Moreno: One of the best things I ever did was study beginning Flamenco. What is the secret to great Flamenco dancing?
Adrián Santana: The secret for me is first of all to be born with the gift art appreciation and then to dedicate endless hours to preparing and training yourself well in all its disciplines. And to have a good basis to later be able to use all that knowledge and technique to put them at the service of your art and the heart of each artist and from there to bring your personality to Flamenco.
What do you love best about Flamenco?
If I have to choose, I identify myself very much with the Soleá, I like to do it with castanets and also with the Taranto, they are two of the flamenco “palos” that I think that my personality identifies me the most.
How long have you been dancing? How did you start?
I’ve been dancing all my life, that’s what my mom tells me and my family always danced since I was born, I started to train as a dancer at the age of 7 years old with my teacher Pepito Vargas and at the Professional Dance Conservatory of Malaga, my hometown.
I very much enjoyed watching your incredible dance moves to incredibly good music in the videos. Do the musicians and you improvise parts of the performance, as in jazz, or is it all choreographed in advance?
Thank you very much for your words, I am very happy that you liked the videos you have seen, although flamenco is not made for the screens. In my opinion, it is very cold. Flamenco has to be lived live. I totally agree!
Well, yes, there is a lot of improvisation, especially in the world of Tablao, there is nothing written or rehearsed from the moment you start until you finish, it is pure improvisation, singing, guitar and dance.
Do you still teach online Flamenco classes? Can anyone join your class?
The online classes have been my latest challenge in these two years since the pandemic. I continue with online classes and I have a lot of material stored in the library to offer it to anyone who is interested and wants to study with me. I have techniques for dancing with gowns, shawls, castanets, fans, body technique, and choreography for anyone who wants to contact me. I am happy to hear from people who want to be new students and will send the material that best suits your needs.

Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco se enorgullece de presentar el espectáculo Transitar por un Mundo sin Tiempo el sábado 13 de mayo en el Herbst Theatre de San Francisco. Con la participación del bailarín abiertamente gay Adrián Santana y la Directora Artística, Carola Zertuche. Fusionan el flamenco con música electrónica en directo, violín y guitarra eléctrica interpretados por músicos increíbles.
El alucinante espectáculo está inspirado en el viaje que Zertuche realizó a Jordania, en Oriente Próximo, en 2021. En sus palabras: “Visitar el desierto de Wadi Rum, especialmente, fue una de las experiencias más increíbles de mi vida: una energía pacífica me rodeó como una fuerza inexplicable. Tuve la sensación -con la luz, la interminable arena roja, las estrellas claras en el cielo nocturno- de que el tiempo había dejado de existir, de que todo era perfecto, de que cualquier cosa podía suceder. El flamenco, para mí, también tiene esa energía inexplicable, y me gustaría que el público sintiera esas mismas emociones, aunque sólo fuera durante la hora y cuarto que dura el espectáculo”.
Este es el debut de Santana con la compañía y, aunque ha tenido una gran acogida entre el público de todo el mundo, es la primera vez que actúa en San Francisco. Habló recientemente con Laura Moreno.
Entrevista con Adrián Santana
Laura Moreno: Una de las mejores cosas que hice en mi vida fue aprender flamenco.¿Cuál es el secreto de un buen baile flamenco?
Adrián Santana: El secreto para mi está en primer lugar nacer con el don de gustarte el ARTE y después dedicarle infinitas horas a prepararte y formarte bien en todas sus disciplinas y tener una buena base para más tarde poder utilizar todos esos conocimientos y técnica para ponerlos al servicio del ARTE y del Corazón de cada artista y de ahí aportar tu personalidad al Flamenco.
¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de bailar flamenco?
Del Flamenco me gusta bailar todo es un Arte del que estoy plenamente enamorado y me encanta todo lo que ofrece, si tengo que elegir algún palo me identifico mucho con la Soleá, me gusta hacerla con castañuelas y también con el Taranto, son dos de los palos flamencos que pienso que más me identifica mi personalidad.
¿Cuánto tiempo lleva bailando? ¿Cómo empezó?
Bailando llevo toda la vida, eso me cuenta mi mamá y mi familia siempre bailaba desde que nací, empecé a formarme como Bailaor/ Bailarín a la edad de 7 años con mi maestro Pepito Vargas y en el Conservatorio Profesional de Danza de Málaga mi ciudad natal.
Los clips que he visto de usted bailando son increíbles, con una música increíblemente buena. En el escenario, ¿los músicos y usted improvisan en algunas partes, como en el jazz, o está todo guionizado de antemano?
Muchas gracias por tus palabras me alegra mucho que te haya gustado esos vídeos que has visto, aunque el flamenco no está hecho para las pantallas, a mi parecer se queda muy frío, el flamenco hay que vivirlo en directo.
Pues si que se improvisa muchísimo sobre todo en el mundo del Tablao, ahí no hay nada escrito ni ensayado desde que empiezas hasta que acabas es pura improvisación Cante, Guitarra, Baile.
¿Sigues enseñando por internet? ¿Todos pueden unirse a tu clase?
Las clases online ha sido mi último reto en estos dos años desde la pandemia, sigo con clases online y tango mucho material guardado en la biblioteca para poder ofrecerlo a toda persona que le interese y quiera estudiar conmigo, tengo técnicas de bata, mantón, castañuelas, abanico, técnica corporal, coreografías toda la persona que quiera ponerse en contacto conmigo estoy encantado de recibirlo y enviarle el material que más se ajuste a sus necesidades.
